Each time I've posted today I've been sent an e-mail with responses from whoever posted after me, is this right?
Go to the Control Panel and Options and untick 'Use 'Email Notification' by default?'

errrr btw ive unticked that box and still get emails.. 
I have the same problem. Before I unchecked the box, my inbox was almost fillled by those bloody messages. Now I get about 5 a day.

I have unticked anything to do with email and I'm still getting them. Can you stop subscribing to a thread? It seems to me that posting in a thread subscribes you to getting unwanted email and that you have to manually remove yourself in the control panel options. A tad annoying.
When replying/starting a thread, you need to ensure the drop-down is set to 'No Subscription' or 'Subscribe Without Email Notification'.
If you untick Email Notification by default you should not automatically subscribe to any threads you create or post in. You're getting 5 or so emails a day probably because you are subscribed to exisiting threads.
As far as I know, any threads you are currently subscribed to are listed in your control panel - https://www.redcafe.net//subscription.php?do=viewsubscription
You can unsubscribe from any of them on that page.

thanks gents, although i had unticked the option to receive email notification, it seems it was still subscribing me to threads. I'll have to look out for that option when replying.
