e.g.:
England — David Beckham replaces Phil Foden
Scotland — Dennis Law replaces whoever the feck started for Scotland up top

For fun, it can go the other way too.

For example:
USA — Christian Pulisic replaces Hejduk (from 2002 USA WC squad vs Germany in QF)

Netherlands: Arjen Robben replaces whoever is playing RW today.

Netherlands - 2014 WC version of Arjen Robben when he looked like a Fifa player, absolutely unplayable.
Instead of Bergwijn for tonight’s game, Shaw or Tripper would’ve been retired.

Spain: Morata is replaced by any random player from the past 20 years.

Robben was the main reason that they got so far. Fun side to watch except for the QF and SF.

Hakan Sukur in for Turkiye, push Guler back to the 10 spot. Goal machine and such an all-round class striker.

Davor Suker in for any of the Croatian strikers, in his prime a world class goalscorer(imo).

Nemanja Vidic in for any of the Serbian CBs, actual leadership and world class player in the back for them.

Prime RVN in for that fraud Depay

Prime Zidane for France(probably wouldn't have lost with him in the team yesterday)

R9 in for Brazil, they seriously lack a goalscorer.

Zanetti for Argentina, great engine and a world class leader.

Depay for van Basten.

And yes partially for historic reasons as well.

Or you take the from 10 years ago in place of Ronaldo.

Don't think Ronaldo has ever really been good as a striker in terms of hold up play or passing the ball and Portugal have less need of peak inside left Ronaldo because of Leao. Also you get his toxic attitude out of the team which is a bonus.

Platini instead of Rabiot for France.

Raúl instead of Morata for Spain.

Soviero replaces Vicario, proceeds to beat the crap out of everyone involved in this disaster to loud acclaim

I mean his "toxic attitude" was never a problem when he was winning everything. This is a gross underrating of Ronaldo

Too many options for Scotland. We had no right flank so perhaps Jimmy Johnstone or Danny McGrain. Didn't create much either so Law or Dalglish - in fact Kenny and Shankland would have been a fine partnership. Didn't defend well either so Hansen or Miller into the defence.

I'd go with either:

Beckham for either Foden or Saka. Both have been bobbins just one hasn't scored a goal.

Or prime Michael Owen for Kane.

For other nations it would probably be a striker 90% of the time as there don't seem to be any these days. Most of the top teams including Spain, France, Holland, Germany don't have a top class striker at all.

Platini instead of Rabiot for France.

Raúl instead of Morata for Spain.

First one, sure, either Zidane or Platini. Or just prime Pogba, stay defensive and boring but with an actually creative passer in midfield instead of Rabiot.

But Raul I remember struggling in tournaments for Spain, so probably go for prime David Villa. 28 goals in 31 games over 4 years of competitive matches for Spain over his age 27-30 seasons (last couple at Valencia, first couple at Barca).

He hasn't really won anything of note consistently since being deployed as a 9 is my point. In fact I'd argue he's been a net negative on every team he's been in when playing as a pure striker.

Prime Ronaldo is of course a better player than Leao but I'd argue that there's less of a gap between prime Ronaldo and current Leao than there is between prime Eusebio and the shambling corpse of current Ronaldo.

And why do you find it odd to say he has a toxic attitude? How else would you possibly describe it at this point, especially as a United fan? It's beyond obvious that he cares more about personal accolades than the team and he has done for his whole career - the difference is that when he was younger and world class he was good enough to carry teams to wins and now he isn't outside of a joke league in Saudi Arabia.

Ashley Cole for Trippier
Robben for Bergjwin
David Villa for Morata

Instead if Scamacca pick one of

Vialli
Baggio
Vieri
Inzaghi
Chiesa
Mancini
Zola
Schillachi

And my point is you don't worry about Leao at all. It doesn't have to be some strict system of Ronaldo playing back to goal like a bruising CF, if you can get some version of the greatest goalscorer of all time in his prime in the team you just do it. You could even just play Jota as the 9 and prime CR7 on the left, or put him off the right. It doesn't have to be so strict position wise. Taking out Portugal's greatest player altogether (when you can get the best version of him) for their second greatest player is just a strange decision. That's like doing the same exercise with current Barca and saying you'd rather have Iniesta or Xavi over Messi since Barca already has Yamal to play off the right and Lewa in the middle, instead of just taking the clear best player and trusting it'll work out.

Denmark - 4 options:

They'd be scoring for fun. On that note, might as well get Puskás into this Hungary side too.

To go for a more recent player instead, a 25 year old Dzsudzsák would've made an exciting attacking trio of Sallai, Szoboszlai, and Dzsudzsák behind the striker.
