Decimal odds - the betting's off - Telegraph

Reform group initiates trial of decimal odds - Times Online

They are surely missing the point if they feel such emphasis on decimal odds is important, not to mention it being a bit sad that modern Britons can't work out fractions FPS.

The packages for reduced fees to courses and schemes for horse ownership sound reasonable.

But um, i though things had improved with the spread of all-weather and night racing and concerts, multi-purpose events and such. I suppose from a marketing point of view you could say that courses near major urban areas could be mroe innovative in drawing in the crowds.

I think they are all aimed at making the sport more accessible for the non racing fan . I wouldnt be a big horse punter so i can see the logic to some of these suggestions. Decimals would make it more straightforward for me to work out bets and also the use of the jockeys and trainers full names on the dockets will make it much easier for the likes of me. eg Frankie Detori is now L Detori in the paper. I wouldnt know who this was....

Well its got people talking, which is only a good thing.

However the sport needs to be pushed into the 21st Century if its going to see any form of revenue success again.

Until they sort out the expense it takes to go racing it will be hard to attract any new people to the sport no matter what reforms are brought in. The idea of having jockeys full names on racecards should have been implemented years ago and it beggars belief that it took so long for it to be suggested. Ensuring proper each way odds are available to the race going public is also a must while I feel the introduction of decimal odds is a good idea. Still too many muppets at the hierachy of racing though, UK racing especially for any reforms to go through smoothly in my opinion.
