D-Day in the Rio Ferdinand transfer saga looks to be just around the corner. The player has announced he will make a final decision on his future this week. Will England's highly sought after centre back commit his long term future to Leeds United or plumb for a record breaking glamour move to Manchester United who are crying out for a world class defender. Nick Hilton gives his thoughts on how he expects events to transpire in the coming days...

No, anyone can attempt an editorial. Whether we put it on is another thing ;)

You secretely like me, don't you ? :) I must be a worthwhile target for you to keep it going so long... <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

He's gonna go.....if he is very ambitious, he has no choice.

If he is a loyalist, a gambler...well, he will probably be another (Shearer-like) trophyless legend at his club...he will be given the key to the city of Leeds and have statues built in leeds......but nooooo trophies.

Utd wont have this need or money waiting for him again....

Another 24 h to go..... :D

Why would they have spellcheckers at a refuse collection office?

It is fine to strengthen the defence, it is needed
but also we need an attacking midfielder or a striker.

We need a new manager that can pull the top players,i.e Van Gall,Trappo......whats his name?or Huno Pun Yoo of Korea.

"[Rio} will be given the key to the city of Leeds and have statues built in leeds......"

But if he comes to UTD, he'll have his statues in many other countries as well, just like Beckham!!! (in Japan)

He'll come, if not, then he's probably braindead.

Just a few words about the Rio transfer.
If Rio does come to UTD, leeds fans should not feel bitter about it.
For example, Brian Kidd and Steve McClaren left us in order to further their carrier. SAF even supported their decisions and encouraged them. Footballing is a profession, and if a man has the opportunity to improve himself professionally, earn more, and live more happily knowing that for once in his life he's given it a go, then he should be entitled to do so without shame, and people should applaud him for it. No offense, but the truth is, he (and also England) will be better off if he does move to ManUtd. Anyone in their right mind wouldn't think twice if he's offered a better pay (double) at another company where it is much nicer to work at etc.

Also, ask Terry Venables if he has the chance to manage ManUtd and Leeds, which would he choose? We all know it don't we.
So if El Tel is as great a manager and professional as we all think he is, I don't think he should be in the way of Rio. Just as SAF did in the case of Kidd and McClaren, SAF pure class!!!

Which is why Rio said Venables didn't beg him to stay when they met. Venables knows the score and wouldn't stand in Rio's way - hence all the rumblings have been from Risdale. He also knows he's a stop gap for O'Neil next season.

Well, Leeds have just turned down our second offer of nearly 30 mill. I say, lets just forget Rio. It's clearly stupid to pay more than 30 mill. I feel sorry for him though. Having stepped over the line like he did. I think he's going to get some sticks from the fans, and it's all because he really wanted to join us.
Anyway we won't be any worse off after this but Leeds definitely would be.
I say now we might as well just go out and get 2 very good defenders (any of Ayala, Thuram, Hofland, Mexes etc) for a combine total of 5 mill. less than Rio's price. 30 mill. is way too much money for any human being on this planet. It's probably enough to feed the whole of some small third world country for a year. I think Rio is very good, but he definitely is not double or triple the ability of any of the footballers mentioned earlier. One bad tackle and we will be left with even weaker defense than what we had last year. On another hand, if we get 2 very good CB, there is always backup. Having 5 CBs isn't too excessive since over the last couple of years we were never OK with 4-5, they do like to get injured don't they!!!
Too bad about Rio, really wanted him to sign (but not for crazy money!)

I agree, we have to decide a sum (which I am sure we did) above which we will not go. Anything over 30m would be unacceptable, even though 30m is somewhat ridiculous anyway.

Yet, come to think of it, Rio may still come. But surely tomorrow is the deadline.
The 29mill. being mentioned is just pure speculation. No quote whatsoever. Even Reuters (the news source on the official website) avoided mentioning any figures. Our offer might have been lower than 29 mill. Knowing how stingy our board is, there is a possibility it might have been only 24-25 mill. It's possible that the board knew they had little chance of succeeding only with their second attempt (considering how hard Ridsdale tried to show off his effort to keep Rio to protect his own arse) surely we were not offering our highest possible bid. I think it may be third time lucky for us, and it probably would be about 30 mill. and no more. I mean would you bid with all you have on your second attempt when you negotiate over a car or a house? Ofcourse not. I hope I'm right.
