Since this Keane story seems to be getting a small bit of press coverage, we thought it would be a good idea to have an editorial about it!

the_reporter (aka Mark Bain) has put together an excellent little piece about the whole thing which is well worth a read.

<a href="https://www.redcafe.net/2001-02/editorial.php3?id=62" target="_blank">Ireland up in arms</a>
Roy Keane is at the centre of a World Cup controversy that has divided Irish football like never before. After criticising FAI officials, manager Mick McCarthy and even some of his fellow players, Keane was sent home in disgrace but that was only the beginning of the story which has dominated the headlines. With the debate raging on, journalist Mark Bain gives his opinion on the whole fiasco and looks at the effect it will have on both Irish football and the Manchester United skipper...

You should have gotten Davo to write it,

he is after all the expert in the whole area and has close contact with several flies who were sitting on the wall last week, all of whom have sadly passed away since but their descendants are carrying the tale back to Davo.

Yeah, yeah, abuse of power big time.

United does not equal Ireland.

Go away.

;)

Nice editorial. Sums it up.

It will be interesting to see if at the end of this World Cup, Mick does resign (I don't think he has a choice) -- Niall Quinn, Steve Staunton and more will retire anyway from international football --

And Keano? Who knows? This story has not come to an end yet!

Well there are some United references in there and he is our captain after all and how this affects him going into next season is important.....

Keane is a United player and also happens to be our Captain so it is in effect a United topic also. By the way our webmaster is also Irish as am I. I think Keane has to apologise though, after all he has said that he was wrong to speak to the manager like he did. If wrong apologise. If Roy does that and McCarthy does not let him back McCarthy will lose the job after the tournament, of that I am sure. Keane had some reasons to complain and they were good reasons but as Keano himself has said, he should not have spoken to the manager as he did.

I take it youve never studied Journalism then!

;) </strong><hr></blockquote>

One year at Portsmouth University studing a postgraduate in broadcast journalism (passed with distinction).

Eight years working a a sports reporter then sports editor, then deputy editor of The Mid-Ulster Mail (OK you've never heard of it but it's one of the top five weekly papers in Northern Ireland as was 'Regional Newspaper of the Year' in 2000 and shortlisted again this year)

Four years working for The Belfast Telegraph in the sports department (don't know where you're from but it's the same idea as the Manchester Evening News)

And by the way - I was at work when I wrote that piece. I wasn't supposed to be doing it - it was a favour... ;)

He'll go all the way to the top at The Mirror then. ;) </strong><hr></blockquote>

They actually offered me a job a couple of years ago - the Northern Ireland edition (I know some of them quite well and make a pound or two by sending them stories) but I turned them down as my wife had just had our first baby and I would have been working late nights. It didn't suit... besides - they were only going to match my pay...

I like you're style...
I have to have a thick skin so feel free to criticise if you like... that's all part of the job. I'll write what I think and people can agree or not... Still at least I haven't been sued yet... by the way - apostrophes are useful ;)

I wish...
I enjoyed doing it as a favour - and unless Niall offers I won't be asking...

Good article reporter man. McArthy has to resign and he will probably want to as well. My main concern in all this is how will it affect united? I agree, I sure hope he's made angry, and I'm sure glad he's on our side!
Another plus is his knee injury getting more time to heal properly, maybe even that operation he needs. All in all I think it's much better for United that he won't be playing. Sorry for Ireland but tough sh*t.
I wish Beckham wasn't playing too. We need him fully fit for August. Don't want to be hearing excuses at the beginning of the season 'bout "players are tired after the World Cup" "not enough rest" "too many injuries after the WC " etc etc etc.
Winning the league in record style next year is on the cards and I'd just love it.

Sad as it may be i agree with Keane actually having the bottle to 'stand up' for what he believes, if the chat with McCArthy got 'personal' - then he should apologise....but its always difficult to believe what is said in the media (no offence to anyone reading this). I for one agree with the way Keane has critised United & the fans in the past & have a lot of respect for him doing so!!! afterall it is the truth what he speaks, much as the old FA's favourite John Gregory does - another whose not affraid to speak his mind !!

Finally - i would like to actually see an end to the boo boys @ OT this coming season, and us get behind every player through thick & thin..(a view which is quite evident in the Utd mag)Blanc has silenced his critics & i hope he stays another year & cannot wait to see the best of Veron & Forlan...After all a CL Final @ OT will be better than the one we missed at Glasgow :(

The more I read about this, the more I side with Roy.

When it first blew up, I thought it was a case of Roy not putting brain in gear before opening mouth. In an ideal world, he would have remained calm and dignified, but an ideal world it isn't, and seems to me he was provoked beyond what most people with an ounce of gumption would have reacted to.
