It says TeamTalk is going to as well. Niall - don't do iiiiitttttt!!!

Damn! That really sucks :( I can totally sympathise with their situation but don't worry Neil, RedCafe ain't going to become a subscription site. Who would pay to visit if it was??

The site does walk a tightish line though similar to redissue. Although the visitor count isn't particularly substantial, costs aren't cheap for a poor old student like yours truly. The advertising does help but it sure doesn't cover all the expenses. So while everyone involved in the site is always trying to increase its popularity and attract more visitors, it's a vicious circle because the more people that visit, the more bandwidth is used and the higher the costs spiral!

Red Issue (or more specifically the visitors) are paying the price for their own success it seems!

Start with the Liverpickles.

Well if subscriptions aren't on the agenda, but you need contributions, that might be an option?

Subscription only sites generally don't have a good long term track record on the net, unless of course they offer a free service alongside the subscription one. There's really no need for a site like that to go subscription only.

Not TeamTALK :( Its my main news-source for the cafe. ;)

can't imagine anyone paying for Team Talk - but is this the direction sites are heading in the future ? :(

It's an attempt... Whether it works or not - time will tell. Internet profits have been going down for a long time now, so people hope to get money from selling subscriptions... Donno if it works, doubt it. I certainly wouldn't pay money for sites unless everyone did it and you just couldn't get anything otherwise.

I'm working for Israel's largest (well, just about only) Sports site and they've recently launched a new site, sports as well but different than the first (one has regular news, the other has more articles and gossip) and are demanding money for it. I seriously don't it would get much.
