Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith has said that the band are "halfway through" finishing their new album.

The as-yet untitled studio effort will be the follow-up to 2006's 'Stadium Arcadium', and is being produced by Rick Rubin.

"We're probably halfway through the record," the drummer told MusicRadar.com. "I think we've tracked about 20 songs already, and there's a few more left to do. Then we'll whittle them down to make the best record."

"We always cut a lot of songs and see which ones rise and which ones fall - that's just how we like to work," he continued. "But the new one won't be a double album like 'Stadium Arcadium', I can tell you that."

As for a release date, Smith added that the group are hoping it will be out in spring next year.

"We'd like to try to deliver the album in March," he explained. "We're definitely hoping to have it out by next summer. It's been a long time in coming."

The group's 10th studio album will be the first to feature new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. He replaced John Frusciante, who left the group last year.

Meanwhile, Smith also revealed that the band already "have festival dates booked for the summer of 2011", although didn't go into detail about which events they were confirmed to appear at.

I can't wait for this! Hopefully they come to Oxegen and if not then I'm going to Glastonbury or whatever festival they end up doing in the UK. Been waiting all my life to see them live. Pity about Frusciante but I can get over that.

I actually prefer Frusciante's solo stuff. He strikes me as a much better singer than Kiedis.

That being said, I do like RHCP, and I'll be interested to hear what Klinghoffer brings to the table.

They've announced dates in November. Must go see them.

Dublin O2 Arena (November 4)
London O2 Arena (7, 9, 10)
Glasgow SECC Hall (12)
Manchester Evening News Arena (14, 15)
Sheffield Motorpoint Arena (17)
Birmingham LG Arena (19, 20)

Someone will probably say they're shit now or something but I cannot not see them live. Frusciante or no Frusciante.

Klinghoffer's a really good guitarist- I saw him when he was part of PJ Harvey's live band about 4 years ago.

As for RHCP- never liked them. It's weird because 3/4 of the band is talented (Flea, Frusciante and Smith) while Kiedis can't sing or rap for shit. In the end he makes them sound tired and boring.

I don't like it much either, but I'll still probably go to the MEN show, saw them at the City of Manchester Stadium like 6 years ago, thought they were great there and I didn't like half the songs they played, just a lot of fun live.

The Chili Peppers stopped being good after One Hot Minute in my opinion.

I quite liked Californication too, but after that I'm not over keen. I have tickets to their london show though :). Hopefully I'll get to attend it this time!

That's funny, I only got half way through their old album.

Feckin hell, thats ridiculous.

This warning of checking the name on the ticket to stop touts certainly isn't working

Ok I caved and got some, still left me a bit pissed off though. Seatwave is a cnut.

I go on there, standing tickets for the Thursday showat the O2 for £45, 200 left. Go through the motions, confirm my purchase, error screen. Try again, error screen. Try on my phone, error screen. It's not just any error screen either, it's just an X, doesn't actually tell me what's wrong. I try ticketmaster and find seated ones opposite the stage for the Monday, will have to do. Gives me 10 minutes to make the booking while I try cuntwave again, still nothing. I confirm with 2 minutes left on my reservation and ticketmaster says it cannot complete the request for me. So I try numerous times again and eventually find seated ones on the Monday again, more in the corner this time and it worked.

So not great seats or day but at least it's still seeing them.

 I ranted about seatwave on twitter and they replied. I didn't even hashtag them.

I wanted to make sure I got tickets, so I pre-ordered their album and got access to the presale. For the sake of 8 quid, I thought it would be worth it, even if the album is shite.

£47 to see them. Not paying that.

Paid £50 to see them at the MEN a few years ago. Was sat really far back - no atmosphere whatsoever. Musically great but their rapport with the crowd was non-existent

£47 is pretty much average for a big band really.

Seeing them tonight. Not expecting much, am quite far back. Hopefully they play a lot of their older stuff.

I got my tickets in presale, I believe you're following me to this one. My very own stalker!

Are you in standing? I'm going to throw my beer at you.

So where were you bill? I may as well have watched it from the rafters. Still enjoyed it though.

I was on the right betweeen the techy box and the stand. I enjoyed the show, the amount of energy they bounced around with considering they're 50+ was impressive. I was also chuffed that they played Higher Ground, Me And My Friends and Fire. Will Ferrell was quality on the drums too.

Yeah I was pleased that they didn't really play anything from Stadium Arcadium or their new one.

I actually think Monarchy Of Roses is a cracking tune.
