I remember a ways back when Man Utd hooked up with the New York Yankees there was talk of a tour of the States. I think this would be absolutly hillarious and would be great for "soccer." Is this still on anyone's agenda? I would be very curious to find out... thanks.

football is booming in asia at the moment !
the US treat soccer like shite ! it's a girls sport over there !
Why should UTD go over there to be un appreciated, let them come to OT !!

A tour of the US might be a good thing. The fact is that our measure of the men's game over here is the MLS, not the most exciting, high-level stuff out there. Matching United against some US teams or "all-stars" would draw nice crowds in some MLS communities like metro New York, DC, and Columbus, Ohio, give US Soccer a chance to educate fans on the game, and sell a bunch of $tuff to increase your war chest. Remember that Barcelona (and possibly the Old Firm) are teaming up with the NFL in the hopes of getting a lot of money to buy success at the European level as well.
The Yankees have launched a new cable sevice "YES," and adding "soccer" in the form of Manchester United as part of the sports package would probably be in the best (financial) interests of all involved.

i reckon if utd came over here and jus tore every1 apart, our american cousins would be so incensed at losing 2 Eng (they don't dig that sorta thing ) they'll push 2 get bigger n better...aah...but is that necessarily a good thing? we sure don't need one more thing they can kick our arses in :o

I thought they were supposed to be coming here summer 2003?

I'd like to see the Toyota Cup moved from Tokyo to the Rose Bowl. Something like United v River Plate would get over 100k people in southern California. Short of that United v MLS Allstars might be a good publicity stunt.

I don't mean to offend any US "soccer" fans but I think that the standard of soccer here, compared to that of England and other footballing countries/leagues, well..., SUCK! I don't know what good would Man Utd do by coming here. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see them play live but I'd rather it be a REAL competition instead of ANY MLS teams. I know some of you would see that i'm from Chicago. Well, I'm originally from Malaysia and I've been with Man Utd even before coming here. Have you seen MLS games (be it on TV or live)? I had an American friend who argued with me saying that Mexican soccer is the best (again, i do not mean to offend anyone)! My point is for anyone that's watched the English Premier League, nothing else compares to it. I don't even think that people here in the States(except those in this forum) would know who in the world Manchester United are.

I'm sorry if i stepped on anybody's tail with this post. I just felt that it would really be a waste of time for Man Utd to come here and play. No one gives a shit about football(NOT NFL) here.

Glory! Glory Man Utd!

I saw villa play over here a few years ago and they didnt overwhelm the MLS competition they were facing. Obviously the MLS is equivilant to the english 2nd division or maybe the bottom of the 1st.

United would be a big hit in the States on a three or four game tour. Get Barca and maybe 1 or 2 other European clubs involved, and combine an MLS all star team and reigning champ and voila= an excellent promotional oppurtunity. The PLC and MLS know the marketing potential and the soaring revenues. ESPN/ABC would show all matches live, since they have a contract with MLS and US National Team. I say they will play in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Boston. I'd love to see them in Dallas. Invite a Spanish side (either from La Liga or South America) and Dallas or Miami would see a huge crowd. Plenty of stadia in the US can hold over 60K. This would be awesome and I fully expect United to be here in 2003 or 2004.

Pre season tours should be strong enough to test the squad as well as easing them back to full fitness. Too many recent tours have been all about the money and merchandising with no real challenge to the team and we have not looked sharp enough in the opening weeks of the season as a result. Your idea of playing it as a touring mini tournament (similar to the world club championship) with a selection of the best in Europe/South America and 1 or 2 local teams would satisfy both footballing and marketing needs perfectly and would work well in both the US and the Asian markets we have been pushing recently (why did we not play Liverpool in Singapore last summer? it would have filled the stadium and been a good test for both teams).

It has been another wonderful season and one where Manchester United announced an alliance with the YankeeNets. This partnership will hopefully raise United's awareness on the North American stage and with it extend more resources to us the fans. The club has also announced plans to work together with YankeeNets to develop a preseason tour in 2003 and as a US member watch this space for all the proposed benefits this tour could offer you the member.

>>>I don't even think that people here in the States(except those in this forum) would know who in the world Manchester United are.<<<

I tink this is the exact reason they will want to tour, with merchandising 30% down the PLC need a new market. US in summer when there is only boring baseball would be perfect timing.

Another note--if Manchester United were to play a top Mexican team during the US tour, they could sell out the Rose Bowl (102,000) in Pasadena and open up two major markets, California (population 38 million plus) and Mexico (another 75 million or so).

We could always get a rematch with Necaxa.

The Rose Bowl is the only venue that makes sense. Big market, California, lots of Mexican football fans etc.

MU could play celtic or benfica who both tour US and sell out in boston market. even mls draws 15-20K per match. new stadium , state of the art. mostly closer to me!

playing celtic in the boston/ny area would be a masterstroke

any team from big 3 in portugal would be an automatc sell out in the boston market. also any of the "seven sisters" in serie a in NY area v MU would be a sell out w/ major markets.

OK! here goes....sorry folks I had a whole paragraph to quickshot done and my computer deleted it because I was typing to fast.....this really sucks. Now I have to explain again. ugh!!!!

First off quickshot your not offending anyone! You are right, in that the EPL is no comparison to the MSL or maybe so to the other leagues. There is rich tradition and history behind each club in the EPL. Soccer isn't prevelant in America anymore because of the lack of exposure! Other differences are that the MSL clubs don't have a youth organization that the EPL has and so on. Then there's the money issue.......I'm an American, born and raised. I've been a UNITED supporter since birth, has something to do with the fact I'm a cousin to Sir Matt Busby. If my parents had pushed me to keep on playing I would have moved to Manchester at a young age and would have never looked back. Soccer was real prevelant in the states back in the 70's and 80's during the NASL. We had teams like the New York Cosmos, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Ft. Lauderdale Strikers who were real big and sold out just about every game. Why the league went belly up......I don't know! Maybe some one here can explain that to me? I went to a few Striker games and saw George Best play. That was exciting! Does anyone remember that! The good old days.......the NASL would be comparable to the EPL, but the MSL......I would say at least division 1 or 2 at the most. I think each year has gotten better here in the states since the MSL's inception. But you have to keep up with it. I know we have attracted a few players from other leagues to come and play here, they see it as a training session. They play a few years or 1 year and then leave. Now we have some of our men over in other leagues playing and getting exposure to the upper ecehlon. There you see the difference. Our season over here is played at different times then the EPL. The MSL season is also shorter. I went to the opening match of the World Cup in Orlando in 1994, it was Belgium vs Moracco! It was very exciting just to be there even though I was not a fan of either side. We hung out with the Belgium delegation, we had 3 guys from Ireland and England sitting directly behind us. Slamming beers for breakfast! That's what I call the breakfast of champions. Talking to these guys made the match for us in our eyes. They were a real blast to talk too. They were there to see Ireland play and Bobby Charlton too. So you see, Soccer in America does have to toughen up an get bigger in order to compete. Yeah, we lost to Italy in a friendly, but I think the more prevalent teams we play, only boosts our speed and agility and helps us get better. I went to Jacksonville to USA vs Germany......that was a great match. Yes, we did win, but we were up for the game and the Germans thought they were going to walk all over us. Boy, did they get surprised. I read an article in the paper the next day that the German coach verbally lashed out at all his players because of the way they played. That says something for us. I went to see the Tampa Bay Mutiny vs Celtic last year, during Celtic's winter tour. The game ended in a draw, I think it was 4-4. The Mutiny controlled the 1st half and should have scored more goals then that.....then after half time Celtic took over and that was all she wrote. I was thrilled to be there. I did support both clubs when each scored. I wore my UNITED TREBLE JERSEY! I wanted to sit in the middle of the Celtic contingent, but there were no seats, so I had to sit next to them. I'll tell you......I got some very interesting looks from everyone. Especially from a women who was with the Celtic party, she came running over to me after the game was over and practically jumped my bones and said "now there's a man who knows how to dress......" all I could do was smile I had the best time that night. The crowd was mostly pro Celtic, so there you can see the difference between American fans and the clubs fans. I was really at how many travelled with the team. Fulham was here a few months later after they knew of there promotion to the EPL. I did miss that game. I think it would be in the best interest if UNITED came over here for there American Tour. But, there should be a few teams involved, maybe one from each league and play against a team of American All Stars. If they come to Georgia or Florida I'll be there!!!!!!!!!!

Hey.....that was a good one. I had to laugh at that one!!!!! ;) :D

A round robin tournament covering 3 grounds, with UTD, Spanish team, Scots team plus an American side chosen from the teams of the three cities/venues, would surely boost profile and help promote soccer in the states...again.
Why hasn't it taken off big time in the States, or do we just not hear about it back here, because the EPL is so good at the moment?

nasl failed b/c americans new to the sport couldn't understand the game enough to justify salaries paid. beckenbauer as an example - great player but explain to a new fan why! unless the fans understand the subtle things in the game the league will never be supported other then by 8-15 yr olds in most parts of the country. :(

Believe me -- Americans just don't care.I've lived here by NYC for thirty years. They just don't care.I don't say this as a LFC fan.Just a football fan.You say soccer--english soccer and all you get back is"those are some crazy fans! What a sissy game!"I would love to take some of these sports experts here-bring em back to game in England. They really think that American football and baseball stadiums have this "great atmosphere"--what a joke. All they cheer is defense--defense or Lets go yanks.Unless they experience true football in its natural setting---Anfield ,OT and the like, they will never warm up to it.

Here are some articles explaing American views to the sport. I'm an American and it pains me to see how simple minded my fellow Americans can be. No wonder half the world hate us.

American Attitudes Towards Soccer

Making Sense of the Soccer Bashers

Reaction to Frank Deford's "Soccer is Un-American"

We have some idiots in this country who are so self absorbed in their ego, that they think their opinion on football (oops soccer) conveys to all Americans. Sad thing is, so many Americans are uneducated on the sport (not to mention total dumbasses with IQs equivalent of snails) that they gorge themselves in the trendy anti-soccer movement. Pathetic.

mu77, planning on going down for the US-Holland match in May at Foxboro?

Tickets go from $70-$35

United could play the Mexican Champ in the Rose Bowl, a team from Portugal in New England, Celtic in either NY or Chicago, hell, probably the Brazilian/Argentine Champ in Miami. I imagine all the games would be packed.

Come to think of it, wasn`t it the Celtic supporters who taunted Claudio Reyna after Sept. 11th by all doing airplane immitations??

It would be nice. IMO, the best venue would be the Rose Bowl since it fills over 100k. The U of Michigan and Penn St also hold about 100k I think.

mike , i haven't even heard it was on. i thought is was just talk (abuddy mentioned an international). any firm date. may is a perfect time to head down 93 to foxboro. our other reds (sox) kick off monday. i hate opening day! let me know about any info you got on oranje v US.

That's not true. I am a teenager who plays football or soccer here in the States and I know that every person associated with soccer (be it a player, fan, coach, etc.) knows who Manchester United are. They may not know any other team, but United is very well known in the States. I've been planning on taking a road trip the summer United comes to watch all their games. On another note, I know the English game is light years ahead of us in the U.S., but believe me my high school team could give plenty of your youth teams a run for the money, most likely beat them except for the very tops. Just ask Sinders. Watch out in a couple of years, our youth is excellent, I know.
