Can we please list them here, as I find myself in this kind of mood?

Obviously loads of Floyd songs would eventually make the list, which is well welcome, but I'm also looking at bands beyond PF.

Let me start with:

Stars Die - Porcupine Tree

What actually defines a psychedelic song then? The Porcupine Tree song doesn't sound very psychedelic to me (although I didn't listen to it all I admit)

This on the other hand does

My first thoughts aswell were 'that's not psychedelic'.

I suppose it's a little subjective but to me it's got to have a big fat wah wah guitar, maybe some sitar, hammond organ, maybe trippy lyrics, big drums (maybe put through a phaser) maybe a bit of flute and preferably 60's production. Saying that, the Ozric Tentacles did some good out there stuff aswell, not sure if it's strictly psych though.

Yeah that would be my thoughts on psych music too although we're maybe stuck in that 60's sound a little, or at least I know I am.

On a second listen I can see some definite psychedelic input especially in the first quarter and the chorus, although it lacks an ethereal quality for me, interesting track actually.

I think youre setting down the first strands of psychedelic music there TD and IB...i mean that definition hardly describes "you shouldnt do that" by Hawkwind but you cant tell me it isnt a psychedelic song...I suppose psychedelic to me is music inspired by or made under the influence or for being under the influence of psychedelic drugs.

so "tab" by monster magnet is psychedelic as are tracks by the Orb, chemical brothers etc but not according to your definitions.

For me the BEST album would be S.F Sorrow by The Pretty Things, sure Floyd are great but this album is cracking.

Sums it up perfectly.

Yup, my bad. Probably influenced by my own filing system of albums, I'd never thought of The Orb as being a purely psychedelic band though tracks like 'Little Fluffy Clouds' definitely fall into psychedelic territory. Hawkwind went into the Rock folder but as you say they're definitely on the acid tip.

Funkadelic would be another good example, some of their stuff is well out there. Steve Hillage aswell, and the Ozrics.

free your mind is as psychedelic as it comes really....ozrics are basically just a psychedelic band.

Good selections, Pillory, I'd add this:

Mr Wilson was on a lot of psychedelics when he recorded this masterpiece too:

OK, I'm definitely naive about my understand of psychedelic here, because Pink Floyd defined psychedelic to me. The Doors extended its understanding, and is closer to the above definition.

It did evolve from the early definition of being high on meth, to music which had high trance and electronic influences, yet it filled within a song concept to enhance the listening experience (hence, psychedelic).

Echoes is one such song:

And I wish I'd been around to slip Grace Slick a length.

indeed...though when it comes to women from mid to late sixties american bands theres always been just one for me.
