I'm a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to mobile phones. I still use a creaky old Nokia E71 but have had enough of it as it's a bit crap compared to the technology around today.

I want something on Pay As You Go because I don't make many phone calls during the month and I work from home.

I haven't got £500 spare for an iPhone either. I just want something that I can search the internet on which will be quicker than the crappy thing I currently have.

Are there any cheap-ish Android/Smart Phones on the market that don't take 10 minutes to load a web page?

And how the hell have 10 year old kids all got Blackberrys and iPhones these days? I've Googled them and they cost a small fortune. Don't tell me the parents actually take out contracts for their kids?!

Parents got me an Ipod Touch for my Birthday. Allows me to keep my old phone, and so be paying about 7 pound a month, while having a device which can get internet on the go (as long as there is wifi).

I use it all the time.

HTC Wildfire

Android, affordable, useful, can do everything you described with ease and quickness. My mothers got one, nice little phone actually (coming from a very strong iPhone supporter, this is a complement)

About £100-ish, iirc. Depending on your network.

rcoobc - My brother bought an iPod Touch and I've considered getting one myself. But I really need a phone as my current one is shit.

Sw33t - I'll do a Google search of one of those now, cheers mate.

depending on your budget;

low end of the scale, HTC Wildfire (or Wildfire S if you dont mind spending a bit more) is a good choice. Samsung Galaxy Y is a decent alternative.

The current Sony Ericsson models are also quite good value for money - the Neo and Ray primarily, but you are probably around the £200 mark with either of those.

If you dont want a touchscreen, the Blackberry's arent bad either. The cheapest one of those is the 8520 Curve, but that one isnt 3G so will suffer for internet speed, the 9300 is the next step up and worth the slightly higher cost.

Finally I know you said no iPhones, but the 3GS 8gb is still available and due to it being a fairly old model, is more affordable than the others (still probably £250-£300) and still a bloody good phone in comparison - and with the 4S having recently been launched you can bet there will bit a load of the older models available 2nd hand at the moment, which will also mean lower cost of course.

i've got a xperia arc,i think its great,i only use it for making phone calls, texting and using the internet,i'm sure there are phones that have much more power and can turn water into wine but my phone suits me just fine,it's quick and simple.......just like me!!

ooops, forgot to add i use it to listens to music as well!!

Cheers lads, I'll be sure to check all of your reccomendations out.

I really, REALLY want an iPhone as they seem so responsive when I fiddle with them. Plus you get all of the cool apps and iTunes.

They're just so damn pricey on PAYG. I really don't want a phone contract either, I said to myself I'd never go back there after taking one out when I was in my 20s.

My missus gets a HTC mobile with her job and I've had a play with it, seems like a decent phone. Didn't realise you could get them cheap on PAYG either.

100 $ - Iphone with a 2 year contract. Not dissappointed so far Plan M. As a matter of fact, it has been brilliant.

:)

You could snap up a 2nd hand iPhone 3gs or 4 pretty cheap because the new one has been launched. Less than £200 I would expect.

Otherwise the HTCs or Sony Ericssons are my preferences on the market at the moment - and you may well find that Android suits you a bit better, not to mention being cheaper. About 70% of apps on the Android market are free, which is a much higher % than on the iPhone App store. (not that im implying you are a cheapskate)

BlackBerry 9790 - solid, does everything you need and keyboard + touch!
Once you go BlackBerry, you won't go back.....

HTC Sensation XL is probably the best phone out but its pricey so take a look at any of Desire, Desire HD, Sensation, Wildfire etc. All Android and from HTC.

Both the sensation and sensation XL I am unsure on, I work as a tech adviser in a phone shop and we have seen more of those coming back with faults than the other HTCs which are as a whole very reliable.

I've always found that spending a lot of money on a phone is one of the worst investments one can make.
