I know what "prog" means but I don't get why it needs to be attached to the word rock ?

"People are being creative ? SHIT ! We need a new genre for that..."

Pain of salvation are good too.

Daniel Gildenlow has an insane voice. Probably one of the best singers in rock/metal/whatever you want to call it.

My recommendations (will include prog metal)

Ark (featuring Jorn Lande on lead vocals. I once read him described as "David Coverdale on crack")

Ayreon (epic sci-fi space opera concept albums, with guest vocalists. Yes indeed)

Coheed and Cambria (warning, high vocals everywhere)

Deadsoul Tribe (vocalist is very similar to the guy from Tool sometimes)

Devin Townsend (a complete and utter mentalist)

Kansas (yes, them who did Dust in the Wind)

Porcupine Tree (the Pink Floyd of the 90s, apparently)

Savatage (despite looking like Roy Hodgson in drag, Jon Olivia is a great signer)

Shadow Gallery (now I've reminded myself Matt Baker died, and I'm sad)

Prog rock/metal is old as hell(late 60's).....when it comes to genres there are certainly 100's of others randomly invented this decade or something just for the sake of it to get fussy about.

I know it's history, I just don't know why the word needed to be attached. I disagree with it in the current musical climate as well.

Widen the scope and you get into progressive jazz/rock and folk/rock of the late 60s/early70s. Some great bands, off the top of my head

Soft Machine
Colloseum
Caravan
Third Ear Band
Santana
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Blood, Sweat and Tears
Chicago
Beefheart
Zappa

Curved Air
Family (my all-time favourite)
Fairport Convention (especially with Sandy Denny on vocals)
Lindisfarne
