Strategy
Free flowing, attacking football with an emphasis on players creating space for eachother.

Peter Schmeichel. GK

Giorgio Chiellini. LCB
Hard tackling / Organisation / Put pressure on forwards / Win back possession quickly

Sol Campbell. RCB
Hard tackling / Aeriel strength / Put pressure on forwards / Win back possession quickly
Nelinho. RWB
Attack the wing / take on defenders / Shoot from distance / Drop deeper when defending
David Silva. AP

Xabi Alonso. DLP
Deep Playmaker / Sit back and control the tempo / Occasionally get forward
Steven Gerrard. B2B

Raúl Gonzalez. CF
Hover around box / Shoot on sight / No defensive duties

TEAM SKIZZO

Line up - Loose 442/4411

Tactics - Looking to play a direct game.

Players and style
Rinat Dasayev in goal provides not only a solid choice between the sticks, but more importantly, and the key reason he was selected early, was to provide a quick counter attacking distribution with his throws. A quick throw from him to Beckham or Czibor on the wings, or Kaka through the middle, and we're on our way.

Bossis and Marzolini take up the full back spots. Marzolini being the more defensive minded of the two, providing the cover for his more attacking winger. Bossis will look to provide overlaps and create openings for Beckham to whip balls into the danger area.

Helguera and Carragher pair up to create probably the least flashy defensive duo I can remember putting together. Carragher will be the no-nonsense brute of the two, with Helguera looking to add more of his distribution from the back.

Beckham will take up his usual role as the rampaging right midfielder, up and down, looking to play in balls to Kaka, or over the top/crosses for Ruud or Czibor to get onto the end of.

Czibor takes up an attacking left wing position in which he'll look to combine with Kaka and Ruud and be a terror with the ball, especially on counters with them breaking forward.

Souness and Giles form a complementary pairing in the middle, both in roles they thrived in, and alongside someone who is similar in what they were used to playing with when they both were at the height of their powers. Souness doing his thing, with Giles adding a little playmaking from deeper.

Kaka in somewhat of a free role playing just off the shoulder of Ruud. He'll look to drop in deeper and get on the ball, but also make runs in behind to create the space. Ruud doing Ruud will look to get in and around the box and stick the ball in the net.

Subs: T. Zarra, G. Popescu, and Pepe

Thanks for the help @Edgar Allan Pillow

Sorry to keep you waiting @Skizzo. I like the look of your team; especially wings and attack.

I appreciate the write up is rough. It's essentially notes but everyone should hopefully get the idea. Please feel free to ask any questions.

I've ironically got some time today so it may not have been necessary... but forfeiting was the right thing to do. I'm not fussed about winning at the moment but I am interested in opinions.

No apology necessary mate. I'll be around later to try and offer some feedback and thoughts :)

Excellent sides.

A classic 4-4-2 from Skizzo and a lovely midfield which is reminiscent of United's 1999 midfield.

Like Oaencha's side and the movement and elusiveness if Raul-del Piero could prove to be quite tricky for Carragher and Helguera.

However not too sold on the Ocwirk-Alonso tandem. Seems to be a bit of an overlap. Perhaps a 4-2-3-1 with Silva in his Spain role on the right, del Piero in his zone and Gerrard as the AM ahead of Ocwirk-Alonso could be a wee bit easier on the eye. That being said don't know too much about Ocwirk though. Will be sure to check out the article that Oaencha posted.

Back 3 is the new rad.:D

I do like Oaencha's team. Wingbacks are obvious weaknesses on first look though I suppose maxwell can deal with Becks. Not sure how good Nelinho was (or who he is) but he is up against Zoltan Czibor which isn't really easy to do. But to be fair Chiellini and Campbell are no nonsense who can cover too (though they have to deal with kaka and RvN which isn't a small task in itself)

Similarly Helguera/carra vs del piero and Raul is again something of a mismatch in my eyes

Overall I think skizzo has got a slightly better team

Thank you for the imput. Ocwirk and Alonso are playing completely different roles. Ocwirk will drop to CB when the team are defending and play as a DM when when the team are attacking.

Ocwirk played a lot of his career as a centre-half, then gradually moved forward and played just behind the midfield. He has sublime passing skills and is actually a pretty mean tackler. He's not a Makélélé type ball winner but he is still a nightmare for attackers to take on. As Chiellini is more used to playing left side of a back three, Ocwirk's versatility definitely helps when the team are defending.

Alonso is a deep lying playmaker and is not expected to go charging into tackles. He will play further back than Silva and Gerrard but will push forward slightly when the team are attacking. As Ocwirk will only play DM when the team are attacking, he and Alonso will have plenty of space.

Thanks for the imput. Nelinho was picked for me but is actually a pretty good player. He is quick and athletic, with excellent dribbling skills and an insane long shot. He is known for that wonder goal against Italy in 78 but he doesn't get enough credit. Czibor is undoubtedly a tough match up but I think he will do alright against him. As you mentioned, Campbell and Chiellini will always help out.

@Oaencha

I will research some of your players before submitting my comments later :) The opportunity to understand Ocwirk once and for all.
Nice to see Maxwell

Ocwirk and Alonso does look a little redundant in skill sets even if they are playing different roles but considering your tactic is attacking I can see it working here.
For me Raul - Del Piero just presents a proposition that Carragher and Helguera are not well suited to answer.

@Oaencha

Del Piero - Raul would be a brilliant duo despite appearances. Given your squad, I would have opted for:

------------ Del Piero --- Raul
---- David Silva --Gerrard-- Dembélé -----
-------------- Ocwirk or Alonso -------------
Maxwell ---- Chiellini --- Campbell ----- Nelinho

----------- Raul ------- Lewa
--------------- Del Piero
---- David Silva --------- Gerrard -----
-------------- Ocwirk or Alonso -------------
Maxwell ---- Chiellini --- Campbell ----- Nelinho

I don't think four at the back would work with my defenders. Maxwell and Nelinho are both very attack-minded and not particularly good at defending. I think they would leave the defence exposed if played as full backs. I also wanted three CBs (Ocwirk switches between CB and DM) as Chiellini is best on the left side of a back three.

I also wanted five at the back with wing backs to compliment Del Piero. The team is loosely built around him and Juve used this formation often.

Lewandowski was going to be my main striker until Raúl came along. Del Piero and Raúl together is a formidable front line.

Good solid 442 from Skizzo. Needs CB upgrades.
I like Oaenchas player's but Siva, Gerrard, AdP doesn't really mesh together well.
Why don't you think they mesh well?

Silva is the advanced playmaker, creating chances and giving Del Piero space to cut inside. Gerrard is box to box and will take advantage of the space created by Silva and Del Piero. I think that works well.

Someone like Davids will bring more balance to that trio than them together. Davids/Gerrard or get a DM like Stiles/Alonso and okay Silva as proper#10.

If you consider Ocwirk as a CB, then my suggested teams have 5 players at the back if Alonso is out.

Silva: Advanced Playmaker
Alonso: Deep Playmaker
Gerrard: Box to Box

Ocwirk: Defensive Midfielder (while the team attacks)

Del Piero: Second Striker / Wide Striker

That's pretty balanced in my opinion. Alonso sits deeper while Silva and Gerrard get forward. Ocwirk cleans up when the opponent gets past.

Then that's really quite close to what I already have except I wouldn't consider dropping Alonso or Ocwirk for Dembele. My team isn't built on pace and is more about precise passing and creating pockets of space for eachother.

And replace Alonso by Lewa?

Lewa is immense but having him, Raúl and Del Piero would leave the midfield unbalanced. Neither Gerrard or Silva are defensively inclined and need someone deeper to dictate things.
