Realistically who do you think we would sign this summer?

awfully chuffed with my capital D
I think a new striker definately and I think it will be Ronaldinho. Possibly one more midfielder, maybe Quaresma as back-up for the wingers and also due to the connection with Sporting. If we do sign a defender, it will be someone experienced, but not a big name. Someone with Cygan's reputation, only much better.

About Barthez leaving, if he does leave, then I am sure Fergie has lined up a keeper.

Dont see us signing more than 3 players tho, but whoever we sign will be real quality.

that means one player for every position???

GK : Robinson, Rustu
DF : ? with lots of experience
MF : Quaresma
F : Ronaldinho

keeper wise iwould only go for Khan, Peter Chech, Rustu in that order.

Quaresma, Ronaldhino, Escude, Mexes, we would be sorted.

but becks might have to go to make way (especially if he does not sign new contract).

-------------------Khan--------------------------

Gaz/O'shea-----Rio--Mexes-------Silvestre/escude

---------Keane----------Veron/Scholes------------

Quaresma--------------Ronny---------------Giggs

---------------------RVN-------------------------

2, max 3 players.

I think he just needs to sign Rustu for free & Kewell for £12 mil & that will be sufficient to considerably strengthen our squad with Blanc, Chadwick & May leaving.

However, if they need to sign one big name, then it's Ronaldinho to the fray.

I've got quite a few scenarios listed:

1. If we don't sell anyone (as in big names), then I think we'll only get Quaresma.

2. If we sell Giggs, then we'll get Quaresma and Duff.

3. If we sell Beckham (don't think it'll happen) then Quaresma and some big-name striker (most likely Kluivert or Cisse).

4. If we sell both Giggs and Beckham then Quaresma, Duff and some big-name striker.

In any case, I think we'll also get a few cheap youngsters with a load of potential.

----------------------

That's what I think we will get, not who I hope. For one thing, I would prefer Kewell over Duff.

Giggs and Beckham won't go anywhere. With Blanc leaving, there will definitely be 1 new defender coming in. Also since we operated with only 3 forwards, I think 1 additional forward is long overdued. Other than that, by the way that we were outplayed in midfield against teams like Real, and even the Arse, we should be getting one new midfielder (with may be one of the fringe players leaving ie. Chadwick, Stewart etc. And just may be, if SAF has had enough with Fab, one new GK there. So I really think there will be 4 new players this summer. This all depends on the transfer budget. May be we should start a new thread to see who come closest to predicting this year's budget. I think it would be about 18-20 million.

Definite possibility one or both of Bellion and Escude will sign, since they are on a free transfer. If they get Bellion and Escude, then United will make one big signing like Kluivert, Ronaldhino, Cisse or some other forward. Or, if they feel Bellion is an out and out striker, then they might go after Kewell, Duff, or Quaresma. I expect two defenders to sign (losing May and Blanc). Perhaps a prospect (Mexes) and a veteran (Escude). Wouldn't mind Stam coming home.

I do not think Barthez is going anywhere, but I think Lopez might.

I see this, although not what I want:

Out- Blanc, May, Lopez, Stewart, Djordic, various other young players, perhaps Butt.

In- Mexes, Duff/Quaresma/Kewell, Escude, and Kluivert/Bellion/Ronaldhino/Cisse.

If Ruud says Kluivert would be his perfect partner, then sign him, and forget Bellion.

Ronaldinho because he is the kind of quality player that will make the difference in the CL which should be how united measures its success. Roni has the guile and class.

Quaresma would provide cover to either wing, young, quaity player- has the interest of the elite- Inter, Juve.

We will surely buy a defender just because we'll be lighter after losing Blanc(May was not really in the picture) and dinny Irwin was never replaced. With Fergie commenting on the youthful inexperience of the defence in the european competition, he would probably look for an old head to compliment the youth. But if Phillipe Mexes was avaliable for a good price I would think Fergie will try sign him because he has a special interest in him, and we have to look longterm too, - the quality players don't come along every day.
I know we were close to signing the LB Escude, but that was before JOS started storming down the flanks. On the RB position we could maybe use some depth, though JOS is probably our best player in the position too, so maybe Escude is atill an option.

It does look like we will go for a new keeper, to improve on Fab despite his weaknesses will not be that easy. Fergie said in the past that he likes a keeper with a strong personality, ala the dane. The only one who really fits that description is Kahn, but he is probably the wrong side of thirty. Petr Cech is going to be among the best keepers in the world but hes only 20/21, but his inexperience would be a bit of a gamble though he has played well in the CL and internationally. Robinson is consistent though not exceptional, reminds me of Semen. Rustu Recber is inconsistent, we don't need to go through all that again. Whoever the keeper is hopefully he will bring some stability, we can't afford to experiment with goalkeepers.

Who I want and who I think we might sign are perhaps two different entities, but nonetheless lets hope for,

Oliver Kahn - Best keeper in the world IMO
Phillip Mexes - Up-coming future defesive colossus
Harry Kewell - Mecurial talent can play in diff. positions
Ronaldinho - That something extra, guile, ridiculous skill, can us what Ronaldo/Zidane give Real

escude's a whippersnapper, aint no vet yet! :) i think he's 22

For those who think we might sell Butt, Giggs, one of the nevilles, etc.

Do you not understand that United's success has been built on the homegrown players?

1. Most of them (Butt, Nevilles) would rather be in the squad without a guaranteed starting 11 than play for another English club.

2. Fergie trusts these players to respond to his management -- because he knows them, has raised them, and knows that they'll die for United.

Swapping Butt, for example, with a player of roughly equal standard or slightly better is not an option! Financially, it would be absurd; psychologically it would demoralise other members of the youth programme -- both those already in the team (Scholes, Nevilles, Becks, etc) and those wanting to be in it (Stewart, O'Shea, etc).

We shouldn't sell any of those players and I strongly doubt that Fergie would consider it. Beckham is the only exception, given that he may choose to leave.

ok first off NONE of the first team squad will be sold except Barthez or any players who causes a mess i.e. refusing to sign a new contract.

Barthez out.

Anyone thinking we will sell Butt/Neville/Fortune is just daydreaming. These squad players are what make us strong.

I think the realistic signings that are definitely coming in are:

Quaresma
New keeper

and some that I would bet on:

Cafu/Escude/Mexes - one of these if they r on a free/cut price as rumours suggest.

a striker - maybe Bellion.

ones im not sure on:

duff/kewell/ronaldinho - strong rumours of done deals for all 3 of them. all bullshit. gets annoying.

As much as I love Duff + Kewell and long admired them from afar im not sure we will get them. These rumours seem to b just a bunch of fans talking.

As a matter of interest, who would you drop/sell to accommodate these players? Apart from Kahn of course.

Livvie you keep asking who would make way but its a squad that wins the trophies and saf wants then options to add a bit of spice and variety week to week. defensive backline and mid lynchpin should be kept consistent lineup, but flair players should be swapped in and out week to week.
whats wrong with giggsy playing LW one week and then saf going with another player (e.g. kewell) the next week so's we dont get found out as predictable!
Do you think we should have 11 top quality players and then the rest just squad quality?
No one has to make way Livvie! Especially not Ole! Trust saf to do the right thing by his famous sons! :)

I think Fergie was looking at revolution in the early part of the season. That scenario has changed.

Personally, I don't think Barthez is leaving. He's been "dropped" in the same way as Becks, Giggs and others have at different stages of the season because they under performed. Besides Fergie wanted to show faith with Carrol. There are no ready made replacements of the quality required (see Carrol's howler as a for instance).

Becks may still go IF there is a massive bid of £35 million plus and IF it is felt Becks is unlikely to extend his contract beyond the two years' remaining. Utd are a PLC and have a responsibility to consider serious offers.

The same with Giggs. IF a bid of £15 - 20 million is made it is a possibility.

There are quality replacements for Becks and or Giggs: Duff (either wing), Kewell, Quaresma (either but preferred on the right). Darren Fletcher is also waiting to break through and is as close to a Beckham clone as there is (G. Neville's own assessment).

Laurent Blanc has gone. Another defender is likely to come. Fergie has long tracked Mexes - who is deemed the natural successor to Blanc's mantle (and Fergie having stated he wishes he'd secured Blanc's services years ago, I can't see him missing out on the opportunity of bringing in Mexes).

That would leave Brown and G. Neville to fight it out for RB. Rio, Brown, Mexes, Silvestre and O'shea to fight it out for CB and Silvestre and O'shea to fight it out for LB. Quality in depth. Excellent cover.

I could see Phil Neville moving on. Not because he isn't wanted (and let's be honest, he shocked a lot of us, including me, with his man of the match performances against Arsenal and others during a very tricky spell)but because he stated very clearly at the begining of this season that unless he was considered first choice he would leave to enhance his career.

Ronaldinho is No 1 target this summer. He will bring in the added dimension required for CL.

My prediction: at least one major star will go - either Giggs, Beckham or both.

In will come: Ronaldinho, Quaresma, Duff and Mexes.

Bellion will be seen as one for the future.

Gk : Robinson/Recber
Def : Escude
Mid : Quaresma
Link Man : Kewell/Ronaldinho/Duff
Foward : Bellion & Defoe

I can see fergie finding Defoe to hard to resist for 5million
Bellion will be like Forlan and make sub appearences while they adapt him to a goalscorer.

Fergie will be true to his word and go back for Escude like he did with Ruud

escude is a player i havent seen, but if theyve singled him out, then he's probably right for us.
its a bit of a dilemma that he got all worked up last summer about coming and then not to bring him this year. i know we should think first of the club but i'm a soft old goat :(
ive heard no platitudes from arthur arthuson the brazilian, other than his agent spouting off

i think we should buy a new engine to ours midfield. and there have been runours about ballack could come to united.

That looks very close. Maybe also Escude, as the defence took another blow wih Wes' injury.

i agree with spinoza, daniel van buyten is what we need mescle and goal scoring defender
