Having read an article today Observer ( it reckons only Rio would get anywhere neartheir team )our troubles in the league are pinpricks compared to our standing in Europe ......They are what we dream about , and what we once hoped to emulate ....a dynamic Chairman doing the job part time who believes only in a philosophy of the best footballers and football, and the shirt sales will follow ... We used to be like that too ......well worth a read but havnt the technical skills to post it on here . Frightening how far behind we seem to be in the wider world

That is precisely why I would love a European league right now! I don't want to be watching us playing Bolton, Southampton etc. I would rather see Real, Barca etc instead. We are not here just for also rans to kick, goad, scream and injure us every week. We are not our brother's keeper to that extent. I also think the FA is a useless slef interested set up and the sooner they are out of the equation the better. E.G. How much money would we make with our own TV rights instead of letting the FA and other clubs take their rake-off out of our drawing ability? Stroll on media partners!

First start by beating the Boltons and Saints of this world, deserving your place in Europe in the process. Thén take on Real and Barcelona. That's they way it's always been, that's the way it should be.

No locking off European Competitions. No freezing the current picture in the always evolving and changing football world.

What if 'pool and Co had decided to pick the best teams in Europe and let them play in their own league in let's say 1983?

What would have happened to Utd?

So don't be silly. You're just a bad loser.

exactly...anything else is just ridiculous.

Maybe united fans don't want to play in the league anymore.I mean they are such a big club and all.I suppose united would rather play in Spain or Italy. Not even the most successful team in England (LIVERPOOL)would dare to leave England.Make statements like that if yer ever get as successful as them.Setting yourselves up losing the league with excuses I see.
Obviously you are in the minority though since there are no other united fans with a sane mind sticking up for you.

Reading the article brings it home how far off the pace we have fallen ... its nothing to do with leaving the Premership a daft idea .....we should and must however compare ourselves with the Reals of this world that is ourheritage ....as Bolton , City etc are to us we are to Real and I cant see a closing of the gap for a long time to come ......

The trouble with you lot is that you don't think! Why is the Prem such a good idea. Why should it be required that we must play e.g. Bolton and S/hmpton every season. Its repetetive and gets no better in terms of entertainment. Who would you prefer to watch? Del piero and Zidane or the succession of Fred Frindlays that we seem to like to turn out? I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to watch matches like this given the choice ,which I am not. A european league would provide far better quality, entertainment and much more money to our club! Do you have a problem with this? The logic of 'beating bolton first' might as well be to beat West Hartlepool first, but we thankfully don't play them though I'm sure a few on 'ere would want us to. Playing teams like bolton & Southampton benefit only them and not us! I'm fed up with being the league's milch cow and what reward do we get? Screamed at, bitched at, injured, baying for the death penalty etc. etc.
Play where we both deserve and would be credited - which certainly aint the bastards in this country!

Once again: what would you have said if Pool, Juventus, Forest, AS Roma, Real Madrid and Company had started their European League in the 80s, without ManUtd?

Right: you'd have said it was unfair. And that's what it is to all club that are not in a position, right now (emphasis on NOW) to compete at that level. Look at how many times the balance of power has shifted throughout the decades. And now, all of a sudden you want to stop this process?

Football is dynamic and you can't just take a picture at a random point in time and on basis of that decide who is the biggest or the best and can leave the rest behind.

As for the rest of your comment: it would be fecking boring to see Figo and Zidane 4 times a season. Now 'pool and utd play 24-30 different opponents each year, most of the games with their tradition and history.

Now you want to trade it all in for what? Playing only 15 teams a year (and that would be "more exciting" and "less repetitive"?).

You are a dumb gloryhunting tw@t that didn't know the first thing about football before Sky took over.

(no offence to all other utd fans intended)

I agree. A European Super League is not the way to go. Not now, not yesterday, not ever.

Do you actually watch the Premiership.
1) West Hartlepool are/were a rugby team. (not sure if they still exist.
2) The premier league is regarded as the most exciting in Europe.
3) You've obviously never been to a united-city or utd-livershite game. The atmosphere at those games is unvelievable.

So whats you theory. Let me guess a European superleague! I, like a lot people living in the north west, can't afford to travel to Barcelona one week and then Milan the next. (sorry to generalise, but the average wage here is no-where near what it is in the south)
The champions league is a great competition but the idea of a European league is a non-starter. It would become a stagnent and boring after a few seasons.

I've supported UTD for a long time and seen many matches. Thats why I get tired of watching the Boltons, Barnsleys and Bradfords of this world who simply are not of any interest any more. They don't improve and never will. Clubs like us and Arsenal have nothing to prove domestically and the same old mediocre roundabout gets tedious. Liverpool might still have the hang up as they've never won the Prem. but they would still be rightly included in any Euro league as we would have been if it had materialised in the 80's when they were top and we were not. Drawing power and financial clout is what counts whether we like it or not and, unfortuantely for the rest, we have it, win or not!

You take your 'social responsibilities' to the rest if you want I, and others, would prefer to watch us play against the like of Del Piero and Zidane on a regular basis.

This comment shows how far your head is up your arse!
1. I want to win and get the glory don't you? or do just want us to 'bring on the rest' like some dinosaur socialist!
2. I've probably been to more matches than you and over a longer period, tosspot, and if you want, on-line, a test of knowledge of our club and its history - anytime wanker!
3. My symapathies for the supposed 'below' average' wage of the North West but it didn't affect me or others. Stop collecting 'wages', get off your arse and do something about it. Or maybe your mentality can't stretch that far!

Back to the slag heaps, pal!

You know, if you are bored of watching them, I'm sure theer are others who would want your ticket....

Also, if there is a super league, it should take the most successful teams in europe, based on cup wins. Therefore, you would not be there. Notts Forest have won more European cups than you.

Also, as one person said, would you be willing to pay £60=£70 per ticket to see a game? thats what the price would go to, not to mention the travel to European cities mid week and weekends.

Finally, you have shown that you can not consistantly perform against the Boltons, do that first. I think you have a fear that in the next 2 seasons you won't qualify for the CL, never mind win it.

Finally, what do you propose about promotion and relegation to the super league? Because without that, the league would die within 2 years.

And the group stages of the CL are so exciting

I wouldn't cross the road for a free seat at most Italian Seria A games - talk about boring. And I see enough of Spanish teams in the CL thank you very much.

Any projected league would involve promotion from the respective leagues of the various countries and relegation back to them if not good enough. There was talk @3yrs. ago that teams like ourselves would be involved in a midweek euro league with the domestics at weekend. Therefore, only the bigger clubs would manage the size of squad required which would preclude the mickey mouse champions of Iceland and Lichenstein. It was precisely because of the threat of media partners and this format that that the euro FA composed this stupid 2 tier group system for the CL They had no choice as the major clubs were well into this and still are but its ended up a farce. Media partners and their like are still around - and so is the money on offer - and it will happen! The sooner the bleedin' better. I want to see the likes of Barca etc and not the likes of Coventry etc. Age doesn't seem to mature them does it, so why should we turn up once a year so they can make enough money to just about keep afloat?

the point of the thread was a concern that while we maylose now and then to the Boltons of this world ( we`ll sort them out at the Reebok like we did last year ) we are falling further and further behind the likes of Real Madrid ....I didnt hear of Ronaldo or Zidane or Figo wanting to come to us ...look at their first team line up and then look at what we are putting out injuries or not , makes you go white around the gills ..... they walloped Roma away tonight hardly breaking sweat ....

We had aspirations to match them once in style, we are richer , we have as proud a tradition,, a bigger fan base ,as good a ground , but as of now I do hope we dont draw them in the Champions league unless its in the Final and Keano is fit.
What went wrong with our ambitions and ourdreams ????

they walloped Roma away tonight hardly breaking sweat ....

They were also 1-0 down to Betis at the weekend when the lights went out.

The point of my amswer is that if we played the likes of them as regularly as we play the likes of Bolton we would improve in European terms. Being the club we are in finanacial and world terms it would not take us long to surpass them and dominate.

If this line of thought upsets Arsenal, L/pool and the more humble of us on 'ere, tough because thats the way it is!
