...why the heck we did not set-off the money we were paying for Veron against the outstanding money owed us from Stam's sale?

Who screwed up?

The funny thing was we seem to have paid the 28 million upfront. Unless it was an agreed staggered payment for Stam and Lazio wanted cash upfront for Veron.

United of course were wedged-up at the time with a new wide-eyed chief exec willing to to throw money around; and every dusky Italian near-bankcrupt club knew it.
United had their fingers burned: there is such a thing as being too honest.
Why aren't United challenging Lazio for Jaap Stam's registration with Uefa?
As I see it Lazio have had the the services of Jaap Stam for next to nish for the last season.
The fact that we also payed a fortune for Veron to the same club is galling.

didn't they agree from the beginning that the money for Stam deal would be paid later?

I don't think the United exec knew what they were getting into.

Besides, i think we were desperate to sign Veron so they were more than eager to agree with Lazio's requests of payments.

Afterall, we would boast our wealth by paying cash for any big signing.

I think they learnt their mistakes and so didn't get into the same kind of deal with the Rio situation.
