Erik ten hag set the template for his ideas, he got the players pressing and you could see the patterns of play already.
A lot of work to do but a good start, a win vs Villa and he would have scored a 10/10.

Promising: Savage

Ten Hag: 10/10

Best: Sancho, Martial, Dalot
Worst: Telles, De Gea, AWB
Best Youth: Iqbal

Manager: 9/10

We're definitely looking good, scoring good goals (that aren't scrappy). Most players are adapting to the new style well, and some players clearly stand out as some that need to go or need improvement.

Our final friendlies should hopefully give a much clearer idea of how ETH can change a game, yet to see how he utilises subs so hopefully we'll see that soon.

Worst: Telles, AWB, De Gea, Lindelof

Best Youth: Iqbal

Manager: 8/10

Best : Sancho

Finally a disciplinarian, proactive Coach who has got these bunch of players playing so sleek/beautiful football. The training videos shows how well drilled training sessions are. Finally everyone can see how he wants the football to be played.

I can't really read into it much, impressed with how fit and sharp a lot of tbe players look. Especially the front 3.

Shaw seems a few weeks off on fitness.

Ten Hag's quite obviously already had an influence on the way we play which is all you can ask for. I'm hoping we avoid injuries the next 2 weeks, all the players get to full fitness and then we're raring to go for Brighton.

What's wrong with creating a thread and evaluating how the tour went?

@Trex agree with all your ratings, except I might have replaced by Fred if you exclude his 15~ minute 2nd half vs Villa
Yes I agree Fred was quite good too.

De Gea - 5
Heaton - 4

Dalot - 8
Wan Bissaka - 3
Laird - n/a

Maguire - 7
Lindelof - 6
Bailly - 7
Varane - 5

Shaw - 7
Malacia - 7
Telles - 5

Fred - 7
McTominay - 6
Van de Beek - 5
Bruno - 7
Zidane - 8
Savage - 6
Garner - n/a

Sancho - 9
Martial - 9
Rashford - 7
Amad - 4
Elanga - 4
Pellistri - 6
Hannibal - 5
Garnacho - n/a
Chong - 5

Ten Hag - 10 - Clear patterns of play, assertive with his planning and communication, but mainly the training methods and translating it to an on the pitch difference right away. 0 doubt about him, he's a top manager.

Players who have surprised/worked their way up for the manager:
  • Martial
  • Dalot
  • Zidane
Players who have disappointed/dropped down the pecking order for the manager:
  • Elanga
  • Amad
  • Van de Beek
  • Wan Bissaka
I would say the rest are more or less somewhere along the "as expected/normal" spectrum (i.e, nobody should be surprised to see Sancho being excellent).

Agree about Sancho, Martial and Dalot - looking very good.
The team in general looks sharp bar a few players who only returned to training. This is the biggest positive.

I did not see a significant change in play to be honest, we look more pleasing on the eye without much pressure so I wouldn't read much into prea-season performances.
ETH did good, I don't think there is much space for maneuver with currently available squad so can't really rate him higher than good.

Early days and signs of promise but unfortunately there was a lot of what weve become accustomed to or worse, begun to think is acceptable or 'good enough'. Too many players who have years worth of mediocrity behind them that we are once again convincing ourselves are good enough, and not enough additions.

Ten Hag himself looks like a good appointment who may well be failed by lack of appropriate recruitment.

Positives - Front 3 looks good and I think this style of play, and ETH's coaching, will get the right balance of Hollywood ball and sensible ball out of Bruno. Add in Eriksen and I think we'll see some really good football next season.

So-so - McFred look like they'll get better instructions from ETH than they ever got from Ole, but I see few signs of a dramatic change from either of them. Maybe they'll be 10% better, but we need them 100% better. Not a midfield that will win us the league, but it may hold up long enough for us to get replacements without too much damage.

Negatives - questions but no answers from the centre backs. Pressing from the front will help them, Martinez should help, but none of our centre backs on the tour really gave many signs of nailing the slot down. I think getting caught out on the counter attack when the press fails is going to be a regular occurrence this season, and we'll see a lot of mixing and matching before we settle down on a preferred pair.

Fullbacks?

Because people who think pre-season is a true indication of the player's performance level will come and comment saying that these players do not deserve to play any further.

The whole purpose of pre-season is match fitness and identifying which positions the players excel in. Even if you see a player falter there is a chance he will play in a different position. Its a experimentation period of football.

Manager: 10/10

Best: Sancho, Martial, Zidane, Dalot, Bailly

Worst: AWB, VDB, Telles, Diallo, Chong

Pre season is a time to build fitness and and a period were the manager has sufficient time to pass on information to the players especially a new manager with new ideas.
You can judge already who is getting up to speed and who isn't.
Obviously it isn't the end of it all and also a player can look good but still struggle when the real deal starts but that's not what we're doing here we're simply giving ratings of what we have seen so far so no need to give extra meaning to this thread.

Telles looked completely lost to me…

Sancho looked like a proper superstar…I have a feeling he’s on a mission this year which is extremely encouraging.

Five players who were good from a pre season team of 22 players doesn't bold well for the upcoming adventures.
The same as Redronaldo, the best Sancho, Martial, Zidane, Dalot, Bailly.

Dalot, Sancho and Martial were the best among first teamers. Malacia, Rashford's relative improvement, Maguire, Bailly and Fred were the other positives.

Apart from Savage and Iqbal, none of the other youngsters impressed me, and VDB was underwhelming.

Sancho looked a class apart from the rest of the squad. Martial raised his game, which was great to see.

Sancho without doubt was the best performer, he looked sharp and well drilled.

Up there was Martial and Dalot. I thought Rashford looked improved but is still quite a way off from where he should be. Shaw, Malacia, Fred, Bruno, De Gea and Bailey looked good but I expect more from most of them.

Iqbal is the one who has surprised me the most, it feels like he came out of nowhere. Savage was definitely the second best newcomer. I also thought Hannibal looked okay in moments and controversially I think Chong was actually okay, staking a claim for a transfer fee hopefully.

Maguire I thought made a lot of mistakes but credit where due, he did look more assured than he showed us last season, but that really is not very hard. DVB should have done more, he looks not fit enough. Varane is a question mark for me, never fit but if he can overcome this, we would be a force if he is paired with Martinez.

AWB, Lindeloff, Telles and to some variation, Mctominay, looked off the pace and as useless as last season. I would happily sell all four.

I think Amad showed his lack of maturity, he gets into some great positions but he overthinks, over skills and forgets to play the simple pass when it's available. A loan is needed for him, to a club that will nourish him. The talent is clear though. Pellistri and Elanga also look like they need a loan, both could have great futures.

Garner and Laird didn't play enough to really make a suitable judgement, but I am excited by both. I'm surprised Garnacho has not played yet but his future is bright and maybe ETH is trying to ground him.

Finally, Ronaldo probably won all the talks with his latest talks of leaving. I love the guy, him over messi any day, but I think it's time to say goodbye if he is not interested.

I'll go with same list.

The high pressing up front was pure brilliance at times. Intimidating defences and winning possession

The close play up front was also something to behold and was key to unlocking the parked busses we had to deal with and to pinching a couple of own goals

Midfield is still a work in progress for sure but we have reinforcements in Manchester

Defense looked a lot better but is still prone to players going AWOL and subject to getting very jittery. Michael Fish looks like he spent his youth in a rugby team and Bailly showed his judo moves against Villa.

It’s only preseason, but I see encouraging signs. In ETH I trust
