Rangnick press conference - Everton away

Rangnick on team news
"Cristiano is back again. Luke is still injured. He will be out for the next two or three weeks. Cavani is still injured, Varane is still injured and the same is true with McTominay I'm afraid."

Rangnick on Everton
"For tomorrow, it's definitely the most important part. Character, energy and commitment, winning the game in the atmosphere that will be probably pretty similar to the one at Leeds. We're all aware of the importance of the game for both sides. For me, game plan and tactics is one thing for tomorrow, but probably the most important thing is mentality and attitude."

Rangnick on the balance of the team
"It's got to do with the kind of players we have available. As you know, we have quite a few strikers missing in the last couple of weeks and months. In the game against Leicester, on top of that, we had Ronaldo not available, that's one reason. The other reason is the focus. In the first couple of weeks, we put our focus on being more stable defensively and conceding not that many goals, which we did. At one stage, we also found out then that we needed a plan out of possession of the ball to create chances ourselves. Right now, It's about getting both parts together."

Rangnick on United's consistency
"I was not surprised. I knew that from the start. When you see the whole process over the last four and a half months, I think we have developed the team in some areas, but as you've said, it's all about being consistent and consistency. This is what we have to start. We have to start tomorrow with the best possible performance."

Rangnick on Ten Hag
"I think this is the press conference for tomorrow's game and I don't intend to speak about any possible new managers here. From what I know, all the managers with whom the club have so far spoken are top managers, top coaches. If this includes Erik ten Hag, then it's also true with him. That's all I can say at this stage."

Rangnick on his successor again
"I know which coaches they have spoken to so far and that's why I can say all of the coaches that have spoken to are top coaches."

Rangnick's future plans
"As you know, we have agreed upon a contract as an advisor and we will speak about that in the next couple of weeks I'm pretty sure - at the latest, the end of the season. But again, my focus is on tomorrow."

Tomorrow's match
"That happens in football [big teams struggling], not only England but in other leagues. But for us again, it's about being aware about the current situation. We still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League, but in order to do that we need to win and we definitely need to win the game tomorrow."

Do United need to win every game?
"In the first instance, we need to win the next game and then we can speak about the other games. If you look at the current situation in the table, we can't afford to drop points anymore and I think everybody in the team and the squad is aware of that."

Varane has so far missed 15 games this season. In the three seasons at Madrid prior to joining us, he missed 17.

I feel sorry for Rangnick.

There was a lot of clamor for his initial appointment but now it seems like nobody even listens or pays attention to him any more.

What do you think simpleton.

My sentiments exactly. He’d be relieved once the season is over. I hope he remains with us as a consultant

Really has felt an utter damp squib of an appointment. I'll barely remember he managed United when he's gone.

Logically appointing an interim Manager made sense as we did not want to rush into another bad appointment and the best candidates were not likely to come mid season, it also was a chance for someone to take an unbiased look at the squad and report back to the board. The reality unfortunately has been that the players are just not invested because they know he is not staying and so they tune him our and do what they want, too many of them don't seem that bothered with trying to win games.

when these top clubs like Bayern and Madrid are more than happy to get rid of a veteran we should probably stay away for the near future.

We didn't start playing like Liverpool within a month so he must not know what he's talking about.

Agree, announcing an 'outsider' as interim was as good as it could be given the horrendous performances, destroyed by teams at both ends of the league. If we'd been forced to give it to an internal coach it would have been even worse, I think it's quite apparent where the biggest failures have been.

Yet some people seem convinced that these same players will suddenly start to act like top professionals once they are working with the new permanent manager.

Really?

Would love to see Stephen Sackur go to town on old Ragnick. Give him the old one-two with a bit of a finger poke and await the nail-biting response.

Then we'll see who's got the hard-talk won't we Ralph.

If we do get ETH and it sets us on the right road you will remember him. Not sure they would go for him if he wasn't here.

Yuh, we didn’t quite get the Hiddink or Avram Grant interim effect Chelsea did but then that Chelsea team were mental monsters whilst our team are a bunch of fannies so it makes sense there’s been little improvement. It’ll make moving on so many of them quite easy I’d imagine.

Think this spell has highlighted the attributes and character of some of these players, as you say we will not be miss some of them if they go.

I really really just hope the players put up a bit of a fight for top 4 at least, especially the ones that are staying. You'd think pride and the difference between playing Bayern Munich/Real Madrid or Europa League minnows would hopefully inspire players to give it their all.

Rangnick has been thrown under the bus by the players while the board looked on.

Veteran ? He missed 17 games prior to joining us in 3 years which is less than y per season  hardly injury prone

These 'journalists' really are the most incredibly unimaginative bunch. What a pathetic lot they are.

They should get Jeremy Paxman to come in and ask some hard hitting questions.

Ummm, yeeeessss. Now, Ralph, have the players given up on you?
Aren’t all the questions vetted beforehand?

I suppose if they published the list of questions they weren’t allowed to ask they’d just get banned by the club.

His job should have been to take the team, assess them, move upstairs as a consultant and then throw them under the bus.

Hope this is still the plan. Our players are pretty stupid if they don't think that's a possibility.

Apparantly ten hag will only accept the job if he's allowed to clear out the players he wants out. I'd be mighty pleased if rangnick gave him a list of snakes already.

In hindsight, Rangnick needed to be either permanent or just only ever appointed in a DOF role. There’s just no way 6 months was ever going to do anything, and these players don’t have a reason to buy into his methods (apart from several hundred thousand reasons a week, but that’s a story for another thread).

That said I don’t think another Ole type interim would’ve done much either, as the squad wasn’t pissed off like with Jose. It needs a reset of the culture, and that was only ever going to come with a permanent appointment and a radical top to bottom change in coaching. It basically feels like we were always going to waste the last 6 months either way.

Massive contracts make a host of players virtually unsaleable unless they accept the terms, unfortunately.

The next manager might be hamstrung with players he doesn't want who we can't get off the books.

I would disagree. For me if we are to have a good transfer window in the summer it’s going to be imperative that he has a huge say. He’s the one who will have learnt a lot about these players over the months he has worked with them. He is in the perfect position to judge who needs to go and stay. I trust his opinion more than anyone else at the club. If we don’t use his knowledge on these players we are likely to see another season we’re ETH has to make his own judgment and waste yet another season on some of these lazy players who have no fight and hunger for the cause.
