Rangnick Press Conference | Brighton (A) | PL

Early team news with Marcus Rashford ruled out
"Harry is back in training, he trained the whole week since the second day after the Brentford game so he will be available for tomorrow and part of the group. Edinson is training, he came on as a sub, Marcus Rashford will be missing, he's got bronchitis with a high temperature so he won't be able to be part of the group and we have a question mark on Eric Bailly, he called the doctor this morning and had some back problems and he is being checked right now. We will have to see if he will be able to train afterwards."

"I think the last two home games, we got four points against Chelsea and Brentford, we spoke about the Brentford game it was one of our best games in possible of the ball and in the last six months and I am positive the team will play on the same kind of level at Brighton and two weeks' time at Crystal Palace. What I like is they had fun playing together on the pitch and this is exactly the same kind of approach we need for the game tomorrow."

Erik ten Hag latest
"We will definitely speak at the end of the season. Both Erik and myself want to have our full focus on the outstanding games. He has three to play and will do everything to win the title in the Netherlands. We have agreed we will have a chat and speak about everything at the end of the season."

Players enjoying themselves
"I think it was visible against Brentford. This was not only my subjective opinion, you could see they enjoyed themselves on the pitch. This does not mean that everything was perfect, but in possession we controlled the game. With regard to next season, there will be some changes with quite a few players' contracts expiring. New players who join us here and players with longer term contracts, it's something that needs to be discussed with the board. Erik needs to say which players he wants to work with. I'm positive with the players who are here and new players the pathway could be a positive one and that is what we are trying to achieve."

Jesse Lingard frustration
"To start with, in the last couple of weeks under my tenure he has played far more games than he used to. Number two, on game day against Chelsea he contacted me to release him from the game and training the following day for personal family reasons. And this was the reason with only three subs I had to take a decision between Edinson Cavani or Jesse Lingard, or even the young Alejandro Garnacho, who I would have loved to have brought on and given a chance to play. I took the decision to bring on Edinson. Had I not brought on someone might have asked if it's classless not to bring on Cavani or Alejandro Garnacho. After two subs, you have to take a decision and this will not be to the liking of everybody and this is part of the game."

Frustrated by social media posts?
"To be honest, I'm not reading a lot, I've not had the time in the last six months to read, I'm not on Instagram, I'm not on Facebook, I'm not engaged in those areas. My focus has been to develop the team. In those days with social media there is always somebody posting something and it's important not to take too much notice of that. Unless it is the player himself, then it might be a different story."

Harry Maguire latest
"This is a decision I have to make after training today, I don't want to tell our opponents the line-up to start. But he will definitely be part of the group."

Ralf Rangnick wanted a striker in the last 48 hours of the winter window. Names 3 strikers he suggested
Dias now at Liverpool
Alvarez going to City
and another signed by City.

Refused by board.

I think he said Board agreed but the recruitment department told the board said no one was available.
Probably the main reason why those two had to go.

Rangnick points to Luis Diaz, who joined Liverpool on 30 January, Dusan Vlahovic who moved to Juventus on 29 January and Julien Alvarez who will move to Manchester City in the summer after agreeing a deal on 31 January. Could have signed those players?

"I don't know. But as I said, maybe we should have at least internally discussed it. Maybe I should have pushed even more, It would have been short notice but 48 hours is 48 hours. It might have been at least worth to try and internally discuss it. It might be necessary and important. We didn't. It was not done."

However, privately, club sources say the option was resisted because anything spent in January would have come out of the forthcoming summer transfer budget.

So if it's entirely on the board why did these two guys leave?

Rangnick consistently kept mentioning that he was more than happy in the attacking department several times. Then he sent out Martial & Diallo on loan, Cavani kept getting injured, Greenwood got suspended and Lingard & Rashford didn't have their head right. Don't think the club is to blame for this tbh. Rangnick, if he really wanted a striker, should have pushed for it way before the last 48 hours.

Greenwood got accused and suspended on 30th January. Rangnick didn't have more than 48 hours.

Greenwood could have well got injured instead of suspended and missed out the remaining season. If our top 4 hopes rested on everyone being perfectly fit, that's a major gamble. IMHO, this is Rangnick using hindsight bias.

Exactly.

Surely he could just have recalled Martial from his loan?

I think not buying anyone was the right call if it was done for the right reasons. Whoever came would have found himself in a right mess with unclear future. Remember, back then no one knew who the next manager was going to be. As much as I wanted Vlahovic he was prohibitively expensive considering the dire situation in our squad. Diaz, too. The only one I'm salty about is Alvarez as he cost City next to nothing. But let's be honest here, would anyone of those have made a difference when the squad is so severely lacking?

However, what worries me is the supposed reason. "There was no one available"? Yeah, no. Our recruitment has been absolute dogshit for the past 10 years, just beyond awful. Better to have come out and said "We are waiting for the new manager" instead of this. I'm not sad to see the backs of those two. Anyone who went over 800 right backs and arrived at AWB as the best among them should have been sacked right then and there. Let's hope it gets better.

I think the scouts didn’t think they were good enough, one has been great at Liverpool. The other deemed good enough for City and time will tell on him over the next 2-3 years. And the board, at the time agreed with the scouts. But seems that’s changing now.

More brutal stuff from RR either once again shifting blame from himself or highlighting the ineptitude at the club. Guess the turth lies somewhere in-between

100% certain if his target was Lewandowski the board would have fought tooth and nail to try and sign him. The problem, I think, is our scouts haven’t actually been scouting much.. to protect their jobs and not recommend any “Bebe’s” they’ve only recommended known names to the board. They’ve not actually been willing to put their necks on the line and put players like hypothetically speaking someone like Konate top of the “LIST” for CB and instead if you look last summer I think the list was Varane, Koulibaly and one other.

Look at the CDM we’ve been linked with for the past 2 years, Declan Rice.

But since RR came we’ve started getting linked to a wider range and different category of player.

What happened to Greenwood isn’t remotely comparable to an injury. Other than one so severe it’s immediately obvious they will never play again. And in that scenario you obviously need to replace them, as quickly as possible.
