Has anyone else, like me, who've been paying this shower of cnuts a fortune for the last few years? If so, is there any reason not to cancel my subscription?

They've lost PL football for next season and just lost UFC too (the only two reasons I subscribe)

So, is there any point continuing to subscribe?

If not, any cunning tricks to cancel your sub without spending hours on fecking hold. I've heard horror stories before about how hard it can be to leave Setanta so any hints/tips would be appreciated.

So have I. A lot of horror stories. I too, have been paying them for a couple of years and have been considering precisely the same thing.

I subscribed for the PL, and their boxing coverage. They have lost one, and couldn't afford to pay David Haye for his proposed bout with Wlad Klitschko, which fell through. Haye was replaced by Chagaev, and despite Setanta claiming they would be showing it, it was actually screened on Sky Sports 2.

I can't see any reason not to cancel. I was just going to cancel my standing order.

Spent an hour on the phone this morning.

I phoned Barclaycard this morning to ask if they could cancel my DD with Setanta - they say I have to get it cancelled through Setanta.

Phoned Setanta and got cut off twice after waiting on the phone for around 30 minutes. I subsequently emailed them my cancellation notice and will send a hard copy to their London office.

Oh for feck's sake.

I thought I'd have to go through something like that. Nightmare.

I'm fairly sure my payment is arranged via a direct payment from one of my debit cards. I got a load of snotty correspondence from Setanta when I cancelled one of my cards last year, after losing my wallet. Might be worth doing the same again.

If only I could remember which fecking card! :(

They tend to 'lose' emailed notifications to cancel. Don't be surprised if quite a few of us end up still trying to cancel a month down the line.

Pogue you are about to get stuck in the setanta sports web. they are feckers. I subscribed about a year ago. after a week I decided I didn't want it cos the coverage was a bit shit. so I called to cancel. they told me I would have to pay a month from my next due date. so a total of 7 weeks cancellation fee. when I got testy over this they sent in the hard men straight away and forced thru a debit on my credit card.

so the I told the credit card company to cancel any more payments. but they still forced it thru. I dont know how. anyway I had to get the credit card company to refund the charges and chase them for it but it was a long drawn out process. delighted to see setanta in the shits now. if I was you the first thing I would do before telling them anything is cancel whatever mandate they have on your bank or credit card. tell the credit card company you are in dispute with setanta over service breakdown or some such. but get to your payment source first and then tell setanta and let them try to chase you for money

I cancelled my Direct Debit via online banking. Simple as.

Didn't speak with Setanta once. They sent me a couple of threatening letters, which I ignored. Then a couple of months later I got a letter begging me to re-subscribe.

Found it!

They were taking monthly payments from one of my credit cards. Just reported it missing and cancelled the card with immediate effect.

The bloke on the missing credit card line asked if I had any payments going out and I mentioned Setanta. He agreed with me there's no point keeping it going to watch Aussie rules football and cancelled the whole lot. Sweet.

In your face, Setanta!

nice one. I went the other route of telling setanta first and the feckers burgled me

Shite. Excellent advice.

Only read it after cancelling my card though. Damn.

Ho hum. I quite like the super-sneaky way I shut the feckers off.

This is what I intend to do. Good to know that it works.

I cancelled mine last night...as per the other setanta thread

call this 08712 00 33 22
then go through to the automated system (but DONT select 'to press cancel press x' just hear for the option 'for any other enquires')
The bloke tried to convince me (albeit half-hearted) with the offer of England and FA Cup, needless to say I don't give a shitttt about the English football team and we went through the motions. At the end of it, he said I needed to also send an email to requests@setanta.com with my Setanta cust id, name and address and will be actioned...
feck me it's a long process

yep I think the general advice on here for all those looking to cancel setanta is to cancel their bank or credit card instructions first and then let setanta come looking for it. then ye can tell them to piss off or just ignore the feckers

I've heard loads of stories of people doing exactly what you did and still being billed months later. And that was before they hit the weeds, financially.

Don't trust them. Cancel the payments with your bank directly.

This is what I've done. Is there any point in emailing them as well?

feck I've to go and try remember how I'm paying the bastards now... what is it about €20 a month or something?

No. Don't bother communicating with them at all. Worked for me at least.

Took all of literally 30 seconds.

erm word of advice...

If you are on a contract (say 12 months) and you cancel the direct debit be aware that the contract shows as a credit agreement on your credit file and if you dont pay it this will eventually go into default and stay on your credity file for 6 years... impacting your ability top get loans / mortgages and vastly increasing the aprs of any you do get uintill you pay off the default (the default will stay on there even then for the duraction of the 6 years)...

in short actually look at the contract before you cancel it...

most mortgage companies will not look at what a default is for (or even how much it is in many cases)... it will simply show as a default and "the computer says no..."

just something to be aware of...

ive worked in credit / finance for years and have seen this happen to lots of people (old mobile contracts... sky, virgin etc)... some companies discount "communications" accounts from their experian searches... however most do not and if anything they are starting to take more notice of them in the currect climate

Good job it was a monthly contract then

In order to ensure you receive all of the viewing you have already paid for, we will process your request 30 days from your next payment date.

Cheeky fecking bastards

I had problems cancelling with them ages ago, managed to do it eventually. They sure as hell don't make it easy. Just watch out for any CPA's on credit cards that Setanta seem to have as they don't like cancelling them, even after confirming it.

I sent them an e-mail yesterday asking to cancel my subscription - seems that I needn't have bothered...

Setanta goes into administration

Setanta's rights to Premier League football have been sold
The Irish broadcaster Setanta Sports has gone into administration after failing to make a number of payments to sporting organisations.

The administrator Deloitte said that it would shortly cease broadcasting to customers in Great Britain but would continue to operate elsewhere.

They said they would immediately stop collecting subscription payments.

Two hundred employees involved with the British operations have been made redundant.

Setanta had a total of 420 employees.

"This is a sad day for all concerned," said Sir Robin Miller, chairman of Setanta.

"Unfortunately, in a difficult and highly competitive market, and despite strenuous efforts by the board and management, it has not been possible to find sufficient additional funds in the time available to ensure its survival."

Does anyone know whether Setanta Ireland will continue to trade?

I can't be arsed to cancel if they're going to stop broadcasting anyway.

Setanta Ireland is totally separate

i just cancelled my direct debit, i dont trust them to cancel it for me

the letter i got when i signed up said i had the right to cancel it anytime anyway

I've just checked and my subscription was due yesterday - but thankfully the payment wasn't taken. Happy days.

I was on setanta ireland. they wanted 30 days from my next payment date. which meant 30 days plus 3 weeks. cheeky feckers considering they can shut you down whenever they like if you're not paying. dont trust them. cancel your subscriptions yourself and let them sort it out
