I've had a 40 inch Samsung 1080p for a while now but I can't help feeling underwhelmed by it. The picture looks very average on normal terresterial TV and not that great on digital. I've also noticed that my mates 26 inch 720p samsung gives a better picture with games and TV :wenger:. I don't get it, is it my settings or what?

Probably a long shot but a few blu-ray players i've set up before, the settings start as something shite like 576p or something nearly as rubbish. Maybe check that out.

Interesting you should say this.

Have a similar Samsung 1080p and 50" (I think, will find out exact specs) which was bought during the last month - exact same thing - blaming the signal.

Terrestrial looks awful and there is a wire running from the sky box (or dish) in the other room to it and was told it doesn't look as good as the other TV.

I have hardly viewed it but my brothers say DVD's look fine and the Wii even better than the other 42" 720p TV, which is where the Wii and PS3 are. Haven't really tested the Samsung out all that much further though.

It certainly seems that the TV is upscaling everything from SD.

How is all of your kit connected to the TV?

360 and PS3 both connected via HDMI. (The 360 uses that shitty HDMI cable that comes with the elite)

And Im not sure if it makes a difference, but im using some crappy aerial extension cable - if anything I'd imagine it might affect terrestrial picture, but surely it has not effect on HDMI outputs?

It's quite simple, really: Samsung = crap. See the proof below.

 I assumed the same thing initially, but every review gave this TV impressive scores and it was voted at the time the best 1080p in the 32-42 range along with the Bravia.

Bought it from quite a respectable online UK retailer, dont see why that makes a difference though, many people I know have purchased from them and have had no problems.

Not saying that it would cause problems but surely it is better to buy something like that in person so you can see the picture quality with your own eyes rather than believe some review posted on the internet. You're here enough to recognize that things aren't always as they seem online. For all we know, the reviews could be written by staff prior to a sale to help move merchandise.

Is it the M86/87 series? For HDMI inputs make sure you have "Just Scan" selected (as opposed to 16:9 or 4:3) and you'll get one-to-one pixel mapping which should give you a nice crisp picture. Also don't use "Game Mode" because it tends to blow out the whites and crush the blacks.

Yes it is the M86 actually! How do I set it to just scan?

Bring up the menu, should be on Picture already (the top icon on the left) and press down until you see the second page of options. Hit enter on Size and pick Just Scan from that list.

Also I believe Sharpness is quite high by default so drop that to around 35/40 to lessen any artifacting around edges.

if you dont have Sky HD then Sky and Terrestrial TV is bound to look shit on a big tv and better on a smaller one
