According to outspoken games industry analyst Michael Pachter (Wedbush Morgan), the PS3 has now outsold the Xbox 360 for the third month running.

The Nintendo Wii, however, was comfortably ahead of both, even when their respective sales are combined - according to Pachter.

Pachter forecasts 360 sales for March of 310,000 units, the PS3 managing 365,000.

The Wii, however, is expected to sell over 700,000 units - with NPD Group's full North American results expected out this Thursday.

The analyst also predicts that the Wii's stock issues are likely to continue well into 2008, especially in North America, which may be losing out to Europe because of the weak dollar.

Official figures due out on Thursday. January and February Microsoft had console shortages (If you really believe that), what excuse will they use this time?

To be honest any general public who buy a wii over a 360 or ps3 don't deserve to be listened to.

You can't really compare the Wi to the PS3 or the 360, as they are aimed at totally different markets, and credit to Nintendo for realizing they couldn't break into the HD Gaming market and looking elsewhere.

Saying that rumours are rife saying that Microsoft are creating their own Motion sensored remote for the 360, which is a bad move if you ask me.

its not that crazy an idea, however I think there is no need

the only reason they are doing it is cos they feel left out, with the wiimote and sixaxis for the other two

the other problem they are going to have is the install base, as they did not ship the console with these, they are only going to get people who want to fork out for another controller buying games that are designed for the new controller

Of course you can, all three are consoles and come out with the intention of selling the most, whether to long time gamers or to people who aren't into gaming much. Sony doesn't want their console to not sell to new gamers and I'm sure Nintendo wouldn't mind an experienced gamer picking up a Wii. When it comes to analysing the profits they're making I'm sure both Microsoft and Sony would be quite jealous that Nintendo is making the most cash while selling a console that cost almost nothing to create due to the old technology in it.

It's not that simple. For example, and it might be a bad one - do Ferrari and Porche look at Toyota with jealous eyes? A 911 and a Yaris do exactly the same basic thing, but they are not in the same market. Sony still has a machine for the low end - PS2.

Ferrari and Porsche make enough money selling one car than Toyota does selling 5 or 6 though and with Nintendo, huge sales + a cheap console to develop + lots of first party titles which are huge sellers mean Nintendo are making huge profits. They may not be stealing much from PS3 sales (possibly a few more from 360) but if a new set of consoles are released in the nest few years I'd expect Nintendo to have a very competitive machine

I honeslty can't believe a system that has been out for no where near as long is currently moving more units then the XBOX  pathetic attempt sony.

PS3 is just a year old in Europe, I doubt Sony has any current plans to release another one until at least 2012. When they do, it will also be based on PS3 technology, just upgraded - so it should cost very little to do (in comparison to development costs of the PS3) and have developers familiar with it. Microsoft is not quite in the same boat, but I doubt that they will be silly enough to release a new console soon either - PS3 and XB360 cost a lot of money to develop. Any new console from Microsoft (if they still want to stay in the console hardware business as a way to get their operating systems into the home) will need a different processor and memory architecture (with an upgraded GPU if they want to stick with AMD), and this will either have to be bought off the shelf or designed from scratch, they also will need to deal with the optical disc issue. In Nintendo's case it will be much more difficult. Wii was very easy for them due to what it is based on. Any new machine from them will have to follow a different route, it will need a total redesign which could be very expensive. The waggle controller will not be new next time around, it will not be such a novelty. They are raking it in now, but what about the longer term?

Are there any decent RPG's out on the PS3? Or any in the pipeline due for release anytime soon?

FFXIII and The Last Remnant spring to mind, although the latter is only being released in America and Japan, but seeing as games aren't region locked, it will be very easy to get you hands on it.

And don't forget, FFXIII isn't just 1 game, it is part of a Quadrilogy. (Versus, Agito (Japan Only) and Hearasis)

That's just silly. I'm probably a much more hardcore gamer than most on here, yet Wii was the first new console I bought, and the same goes for many of my friends.

Correct. The Wii maybe just a glorified Gamecube with a new control mechanism, but it is definitely a fresh approach to making games. Whether or not it has been 100% worthwhile is up for debate, however I will argue that aside from people forking out new money for oldish technology, the fact remains that it's not just great graphics that make a great game.

Strangely enough, there is not a huge amount as of yet. They are coming though - what type of RPG do you like?

Its strange that, both 360 and ps3 have very few RPG titles. Surely there is a huge market for them? Enough with the FPS's already. The Final Fantasy type, one of my favourite series of games ever. Was hoping Lost Odyssey would fill the void on the 360, but I haven't picked it up since I got to the 3rd disc. Can't really put my finger on why, it has all the ingredients of a classic, but its just not that addictive

I think the rpg titles are in the works, Smashed. it's something that can be done on such a massive scale on the new systems that you probably won't see anything major until next year.

a good place to look is www.gamespot.com

they have a section that shows what's coming out and when, in the new releases section.

It's also got a lot to do with the online cluture and MMorpg's. A decent next-gen RPG costs a fortune to make, and at the moment they aren't popular enough to make lots of money.

That being said, there are a number in the works. DD is right, the likes of Gamespot and GamesRadar keep up to date on specific genres.

The 360 was released well before the PS3, so I'm surprised the sales are so close. Not a very compelling argument for a PS3 fanboy.

Bear in mind these are just the US figures.

Does that refute my previous statement in some way?

Xbox360 came out in November 2005
PS3 came out in November 2006

PS3 have moved more units this month (as to be expected), but not by much.

XB360 has constantly outsold the PS3 in North America apart from the past 3 months. I'm not quite following what you are trying to say.

That Sony edging Microsoft in this months sales is similar to Justin Timberlake topping Paris Hilton on the music charts.

That despite it being out for longer, its still selling close to what the PS3 sells?

I'm not sure what that is supposed to prove and why anyone would really care though.

Oh, a lot of people care (goes for a search)........

Like Toyota selling more Yarises than BMW sell Series 3s than Porche sell 911s? :D

I suppose that price doesn't and has never come into this however does it amongst other things?

If the PS3 was 100-fold more costly then the 360 (much like your comparison), I doubt they would be doing only slightly better in month to month sales...

I'll highlight a little thing in bold from the February 2008 numbers that goes some way to show how valid that assumption of his is. ;)

Wii 432K
PlayStation 2 352K
PlayStation 3 281K
Xbox 360 255K

So your telling me that PS2 sold 100 thousand more units then Xbox 360 did this month?

Is a 911 100 times more costly than a Yaris? Been a long time since I looked. I would guess that a 911 does not cost 1,000,000 quid though.

I didn't do the math, and I don't think I've ever even seen a Yaris to be honest. But comparing the prices of 360 & ps3 to those of a toyota & porche is hardly appropriate.

I dont get how PS2 is still selling I mean, yes it has probably the biggest collection of games but for how long? Dont people realise that titles like FIFA, Call of Duty etc wont be made for the PS2 anymore?

BTW Weaste, I've been sniffing around the XNA, it looks like I may go with that one. Although it doesn't really have an animation pipeline, there's plenty of add-ons and the fact you can run it on an actual 360 is turning my head.

Although I, at this moment, know a little of animations, my Artist has already started demanding ridiculous things in the Editor tool! Damn demanding ponce. How's your C# skills btw? I've not touched it yet, but I assume the usual transition from C shouldn't take long?
