Nintendo's Wii led by a wide margin in U.S. video-game console unit sales in February, followed by the Sony's PlayStation 3, according to data released by the NPD Group this afternoon. Microsoft's Xbox 360 came in third among current-generation consoles for the second straight month. Here are the numbers that NPD released:

Nintendo Wii: 432,000
PlayStation 2: 352,000
PlayStation 3: 281,000
Xbox 360: 255,000

Aaron Greenberg, Xbox 360 group product manager, said the company continued to face shortages in February following strong holiday sales. He said Microsoft expects Xbox 360 supply to be improved by the time of the key "Grand Theft Auto 4" release in late April. Microsoft notes that the Xbox 360 is still the leader in overall spending on hardware, video games and accessories.

PS2 is still going bloody strong, unbelievable how well that console is doing after 7 years on the market. Microsoft can claim shortages all they want, everyone knows it's P.R bullshit. And the Wii continues to obliterate everything in it's path, Nintendo must be raking the cash in.

Yeah the ps2 results are surprising, why are people still buying it

The Wii was always going to be the biggest seller due to the amount of non-gamers buying it. Good to see Microsoft bottom of the pile, are the newer models still so unreliable?

Nintendo did an incredibly smart thing. not only are they shipping tons of consoles but has anyone seen the sheer volume of Wii accessories out there?

they must be raking it in.

PS2 sells because it has by far the largest quality library of any console in history, with games in that library available at very low cost. Add to the fact that you can pick up a PS2 in the US for less than $100, that's 55 quid and build up a large library of games for less than the price of a Wii. If you have kids to entertain, or just want to stick a PS2 in another room, or replace an old broken or creaking one, then it's naff all. It's a no brainer - I'm still waiting for Sony to stick Wii like controllers on it and sell it for 80 quid this coming Christmas - they would make a killing.

not to mention the availability of used games as well. plus, as I kind of see the PS3 as a first world console, I think the PS2 probably sells a lot in less developed countries.

it's still a great system.

THis is the full list BTW.

Nintendo DS 587.6K
Wii 432K
PlayStation 2 351.8K
PlayStation 3 280.8K
Xbox 360 254.6K
PlayStation Portable 243.1K

Is anyone seeing a trend here?

The top three are all based around 8+ year old hardware architectures........ I think that Sony did the right thing coming to market later with the PS3, the general public, at least in the US, is not yet ready for high definition games, XB360 and PS3 are still nothing more than a large niche in the market. You can't say that Sony brought the PS3 to market too soon, as it is more important to them than just a games machine. I think that Microsoft will be gearing up the XB720 before the XB360 ever gets to being a mass market seller - difference being this time, that they will not drop the 360 like they dropped the original XBox.

you're right there, Weaste. The general public in NorthAm isn't ready for HDTV yet, let alone gaming.

less xbox 360's were sold in the last 2 months then ps3's. that would be because xbox 360's have been on sale for 3 years!

The fact is PS3 Is a reliable, good looking console - with potentially some amazing games coming out over the coming months + Blu-Ray people will realise that the PS3 is the real Next-Gen HD console, where as the 360 was just Xbox0.5

Well, we know that it is reliable within normal parameters, and most that do fail is because f the BD driver. We also know that its exlusive release schedule is very very strong this year. Blu-ray will become the new defacto standard if people want HD movies, we know this. The point about XB360 being XB0.5 is wrong, maybe he meant to say 2.5 or XB180?

Indeed I did mean to type 1.5 but meh, Redlambs disproved it completely by his startling post of conclusive evidence.

Yes, I thought so, I fecked up there as well with the 2.5, I meant 1.5.

People should ask what Redlambs thinks the gigabit ethernet port on the PS3 is for, it's certainly not there for playing online or even LAN games, I wonder what that's all about?

Heres my tuppence.

In my house I have

Xbox 360, in my sons room
Wii in the living room
PS3 living room
PS2 youngest sons room

Thoughts

Wii, novelty wears off pretty quickly and becomes tiresome, both figurativley and literally.
Xbox, noisy and fecking ugly, good games for adults. On my third console due to red stripe overherating bollox.
PS2, classic, but dated.
PS3, good looking, great games and quiet. Havent used Blu Ray yet for DVD's.

PS3 hands down for me.

I mainly judge them on their technical merits, but each has its place in an ever growing industry.

If PS2 is dated, then so is the Wii - if you remove its novel control mechanism. Both are built on technology a decade old.

I'm lost as to how the ps2 is still selling

over 300,000 in North America alone. Madness...

The Wii's so far ahead and there's still Mario Kart as a huge exclusive to further sell the console (although GTA and MGS will sell the other two). It's crazy that Sony and Microsoft who spent all that money on research and development to create consoles which they thought would dominate the market and then to see their sales owned by a console that has similar technologies to Xbox 1 and Ps2. Obviously in a few years the Wii's popularity will drop massively, but one can only imagine how pissed of the big execs at Sony and Microsoft were when they saw how much people wanted the Wii. Sony in particular who've built a machine with so many new technologies are pretty much backtracking and continuing their support for the PS2 so much basically because people aren't ready for the PS3

I don't view the Wii as being in the same race - I really do not think that it is effecting PS3 or XB360 sales to any significant degree. Sony were clever to keep the PS2 alive. Microsoft could not do this due to not owning the technology of the original XBox.

Yeah I agree with that. I doubt the Wii sales are having any significant effect on 360 or PS3 sales; it's competing for a different demographic.

It may not be directly competing, but I think if it didn't exist, the people who own them would probably looking at things like the 360 Arcade and what not so I think there is an impact. Also there's the fact that Nintendo's not really put that much money into the Wii yet is getting so much that if they ever want to make a truly next gen console they have got the money to do pretty much whatever they want. For Sony it's pretty much been a double blow with them putting a lot of money into the PSP only to see it ,losing out to the much simpler DS. Obviously the hit is far less financial with the Wii than if the Wii was taking away customers from Sony and Microsoft, but you can't really discount the huge impact it has on the rivalry that exists with these companies that Nintendo isn't really making huge technological strides yet their sales are unbelievable.
