It has now been almost two weeks, and I have left my PS3 running 24/7 playing GT5 Prologue in 30 degrees heat. I play a few laps, then let it replay over and over. Do the same again.

The result is, despite about 4 times the fan has gone mental for 10 minutes or so, the thing is still running, and currently as quiet as a mouse.

Why did I do this? Well, just to see.

Bit of a risky thing to do ain't it...

I've heard the fan go mental a few times for like a minute or two and then die down, rest of the time its quiet.

Is it not possible for the game disc to get damaged by pulling such a stunt though? It must have been fairly hot.

It was possible for it to go very wrong, yes, but I got an extended 3 year warranty from the store I bought it from, and it was not misuse in any way.

I don't know about the disc. Really, it only went off on one 4 times when I was awake and with it (for say 10 minutes). But I suppose that is what it was designed to do?

What I think is happening Zidane, is that normally, the copper tubing of the heat sink take it and it flows out, there is no risk for the chip, it gets dissipated. However, when that gets to a certain level, the heat sink cannot take it anymore and the temperature starts to rise in either Cell or RSX. Censors in there must then crack the fan into overdrive to get the heat off the heat sink so that it can then take it off the chips.

I'm only guessing of course.

That does sound the most logical reason behind it.

I'm sure the fan has at least 3 settings of speed or something as well because when I switch it on the only thing I hear is the beep. Then mid-game I've heard the fan increase just slightly but then once in a blue moon it turns into a hoover like sound.

There is also that fan trick thing you can do at start up which apparently cleans the dust or whatever. I haven't done that though, too scared if I'm honest, as I seen it on youtube and the fan goes off on one.

I'm surprised yours lasting that long, although I suppose it wasn't in 100% use all of the time which may make a difference in the long run. I get worried over half a days worth of use, I'll know better next time.

I wouldn't worry myself about it overheating now to be honest.

I don't think that it's Cell, or Blu-ray that are the technological marvels in this box, it's this bit of kit.

It works and you cannot hear it most of the time.

You can feel the heat coming out of the nerdbox when you're on the dashboard, nevermind playing a game

Regardless of the out come what are you going to get out of this? Apart from a slightly increased electric bill

I hate it when the fan starts sounding like a fecking jet. Especially at night when everyone is sleeping.

I've noticed that my PS3 is silent while i play Fifa or Call of Duty, but LOUD when i play GTA for more than 30 minutes... hmmm

Lets see a picture of you weaste

I'm imagining a fat feck with acne prove me wrong mate :D

That's the most stupid thing I've heard, how did this take time? It probably took less, as I didn't have to keep turning it on and off.

You newbies are so funny.

Leaving a console turned on for 2 weeks is the most stupid thing I've ever heard.

I could understand this if the PS3 was supplied to you for testing purposes. The fact that you've decided to do this with your own console, in your own home is absolutely fatuous.

Don't you have a wife and kids? Aren't you worried about the potential fire hazard?

It's got an extended 3yr warranty, as all my electronics purchases do, even my camera.

The wife and kids are not here. As for the fire hazard...

If a ps3 started a fire and burnt your house down you'd be in the money then.

That's fine, you will get the PS3 replaced if the worst happens.

Leaving the console on for over 336 hours is still pointless though. It's not some thing I would ever do, even if it was covered by warranty.

I'm sure Sony will have carried out several, rigorous tests before the PS3 was put into full production.

I read (In PSM3 I think it was) an article in which they tried it in all sorts of daft conditions, sub-zero temperatures, sauna rooms and left it for hours on end and apart from a few slow-downs they experienced no problems.

So if you ever go to the North pole, your PS3 is safe!
