Sony’s machine homing in on Xbox 360; software sales hit new high

The long-term aim of surpassing Xbox 360 to cement second place in hardware race looks one step closer for Sony this morning with news that PS3 unit sales have now hit 33.5m worldwide.

The most recent figures from Microsoft say that Xbox 360 has sold 39m units globally. It was only yesterday that SCEA’s Peter Dille boldly claimed that PS3 is on track to overtake its opponent.

Sony shifted 6.5m PS3 consoles in its last fiscal quarter, putting it on track to achieve its third year of annual hardware sales climbs for the machine.

There were also annual gains in PS3 software sales, with Sony’s Q3 seeing 47.6m software units sold around the world. In the same period last year it shifted 40.8m

Less positive were software sales on PSP and PS2, however. The portable console saw software year-on-year software sales fall by 500k units to 15m, while PS2’s fell to 11.2m – down from 29.7m.

Promising for Sony, moreso when you consider the 360 was released a full year before the PS3 was, at a much lower price. Aside from cutting the cost of the console again, I can't see Microsoft doing much to change things. Then factor in the likes of Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, God of War etc. which are all yet to be released and the future looks bright for Sony.

If they removed all the consoles that were bought to replace broken consoles dare I suggest the PS3 would already be ahead?

I think the 360 was around 9-10 million sales when the PS3 was released so its very slowly catching up, I don't know if it will overtake it though.

He, maybe! Not sure though, a lot of the consoles that got RROD got replaced free of charge. When you consider that they allowed the console to market knowing the problems it had to gain a foothold, you can't help but laugh. It's cost them in excess of $1bn alone, and they've only sold 5.5m more consoles.

As I said, it's difficult to see what MS can do. Arguably their biggest title of the year has been released (Mass Effect 2), though I don't really see that as a system seller. Whereas Gran Turismo is. When that, eventually, get's released sales will sky-rocket.

I think people realise that, in terms of value for money, the PS3 is miles ahead of the 360. Software is obviously subjective, but I'd say the PS3 has a far stronger software line up currently, and certainly has a strong line-up for the next year.

Just get both and enjoy the best of both worlds.

On a tangent, just downloaded Vagrant Story, so that's where Final Fantasy 12 nicked it's music from! I thought it sounded familiar.

The PS3 also has the BR drive as a trump card, I know it factored in my decision when making my purchase.

I played a game on mine for the first time in nearly a year. Got shot to pieces by my 11 year old and quit.

No, you're looking at it from a slobbering PS3 fanboy point of view, and always have done.

How am I? Is Mass Effect 2 not the biggest release for the 360 this year? Does the PS3 not have some huge titles to be released? Was the 360 not released a full year before? Was the PS3 much more expensive than the 360 when it was released? Is Gran Turismo not a system seller? Is the PS3 not better value for money?

Rather than having a slight dig with an off-hand comment, maybe try offering something to the discussion.

You should have kept on hitting him until he got the hint that he needed to let you win.

Regarding the point Elvis made, I'm quite sure that many people with the RROD bought new replacements, but what about all of those units that they banned from LIVE - 1m or there abouts. Replaced with new ones?

Nice to see Sony as a whole back in the black.

This generation of consoles is very interesting indeed. PS1 and PS2 ran away with theirs, but this time, there is massive market for everyone, and Nintendo expanding it at the same time.

Look at this mad comparison to how PS3 is doing against the original Playstation.

SRP -->Suggested retail price (March 31)

Maybe this is why Sony have been confident and not had a massive panic. As the price goes down, this thing could fly and do a PS1.

I've heard a whisper that Sony will start charging for the PSN.

I think they have plans to bring in a premium service, but they won't charge for PSN outright. I hope not anyway.

Sounds like the current service will remain free to piss on x-boxes chips and there will be a subscription service with extra features and included game downloads or something like that.

Coming atya!

Wii next.

Good to see that the wii is still winning hands down.

What the Wii has done is introduced a lot of people to gaming that never played games before. Going forward, these people I'm quite sure will start to look outside of the Wii space, and the options are XB360 or the PS3. It's now up to Sony and Microsoft to get these people or for Nintendo to release a HD version of the Wii.

Nintendo have always had a good reputation for delivering games that are accessible to the whole family. To be able to enhance that market even further by introducing their console as an exercise device is just genius.

I just can't see how Sony/Microsoft can muscle in on that. Be interesting to see where Nintendo goes with the next console.

Well, you could argue that this view regarding Nintendo didn't help them with the N64 or the GameCube, therefore I do not think that it's valid. If it was valid, then PS1 and PS2 would not have dominated the previous two generations. It simply can't be put down to Nintendo first party software can it?

The PS3 is awesome, it makes the 360 seem like a gaming equivalent of a toaster.

I don't share you extensive knowledge on this subject Weaste my good man but I disagree with this.

The Wii has made gamers of parents and even grandparents the world over. I remember seeing reports on the news about old folks homes having them and all the frail old buggers playing tennis on Wii Sports. It has created itself a whole new market and I just don't see the XB360 or the PS3 eating into it.

Even if they added a Wii esque dimension to it, the idea is already in everybody's head that the Wii is the 'any one can join in' console. I mean my old man has one, if I put the PS3 controller in his hand he wouldn't know what to do with himself.

I still play my 360 more, mainly because for multiplayer i enjoy it more as my mates are on it and the party function even if you're not playing the same game.

The PS3 is a great machine, but i'm thinking i'm more likely to use it for single player games, and exclusives of course.

That's why natal and arc are being produced isn't it? I think that you missed my point however. What I'm trying to get at is that the accessibility of Wii has introduced non gamers into the gaming world, and by doing that it has sparked their interest - so surely, from that, they will look into other forms of it.

I started with a joystick with one fire button and an Atari 2600. Once these things grip you, you forever want the next best thing.

It's obvious that Wii has done something odd. PS2 is now approaching 150m. XB350 and PS3 combined in 4 and 3 years has knocked up 70m. Wii has knocked up 70m. We have 140m in 4 years already.

I get what you mean about accessibility, but I just can't see the older generations thinking "I like this, I wonder what them playstation gizmos are all about" in the same way that you or I would.

Time will tell I guess!

And I haven't even bought one. Been thinking about it though.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII isn't on the Xbox.

Have you seen God of War III's graphics on a big HD tele? Have you played the game? Didn't think so.

Are we really getting into some gimp fight over consoles.

Sorry, but FF XIII on XB360 is gimped, really gimped. GOWIII is a lot to brag about if you are a console fanboy, that game series is more highly rated than almost anything else. Let's get a grip here.

I've played the previous versions and didnt enjoy it. And whats the difference in Versus then

Oh noes, you didn't like them.

Let's see if metacritic rates them. Oh, look, a 94 average rating for number 1. Oh, look, a 93 average rating for the second one.

The point is these games sell consoles because millions of people owned it on the PS2 and want to play the new one on the PS3. Do you see how that works?
