I've got a few games for Christmas and have been trying them all out. Then when i go to try out my final game, Alone in the Dark it says i do not have enough space in my memory. So i go to try and find out why but can't see how it is full already as the biggest thing i have is either a fifa save or super star dust. There is no way everything that i can see is taking up my 40 gb can someone please let me no if there is anyway possible of creating more memory without having to delete saves or if not tell me if its possible to upgrade my memory and how easy this is. Thanks.

Edit: Sorry i meant avaiable space on the HDD not memory.

If you go to game on the main menu, then scroll upto Game Data Utility, you'll find all the installs from games that you've played in the past, GTAIV took up about 3gigs of space as did MGS4 most others take around 25-100 megs so if you've been playing on a fair few without deleting then you can easily fill up the drive.

Just delete the ones that you aren't likely to use again, or wont be using for the longest.

It's also very easy to upgrade the HDD. You can search for guides on YouTube that show you clearly how to do it. The best thing is that it doesn't invalidate your warranty (which I think is a first for a console).

You can replace it for any 2.5" SATA drive. Not sure if the speed of the drive matters - the drive in the PS3 is 5400 rpm, so I would go for that speed again.

I swapped mine for a 250GB drive that cost me about 100 pounds a year ago, so sure you could find that size for less now.

You could also use an external drive that could store your videos and music - not sure if you can save your game saves / info on their as well? Am guessing probably not.

Games saves are seperate, can't remember the options where game saves are.

What you'd be deleting would just be some game information for quicker loading times.

sorry for hijacking the thread

but is there a way of transferring data easily when you replace the harddrive?

USB stick best bet, or external HDD, there a way you have to save games and data though, game saves need to be saved in a /SAVE/ folder or something, it's all explained in the replacing HDD tutorials

I got a 250gb Hard drive for £35 delivered on ebay a few months ago, oem and still foil sealed :)

This is correct. Under the game icon on the XMB, you should find "Game Data Utility" and "Save Data Utility" or something like that. The game saves are in "Save Data Utility" and this is what most people want to keep. The "Game Data Utility" is for installs, and can be wiped. For example, if you download a game over PSN, say Super Stardust, it will save its save data, and it will remain there even if you delete Super Stardust, thus when you redownload it, your game saves are intact. Sometimes I've gone through "Save Data Utility" and found game saves for demos that I downloaded and then deleted long before.

Strangely enough I had this problem when I first bought my PS3. First game I played on the console was R&C and like you, I got this "insufficient HDD space" despite having not used my console for anything else. Supposedly the solution is to add around 500MB of data to the console - downloading a random demo from the PSN fixed the problem for me.
