I've got a PS3 issue and was wondering if anyone has any ideas. I haven't had the system on for a couple of weeks and when I turned it on this morning I got a message saying something like 'hard disk data corrupted. require rebuild'. So I went along with it, and the rebuild commenced. When it had finished all my data was still there (had obviously been backed up) and everything worked fine apart from a couple of PS3 store demo's that were now apparently corrupted, so I deleted them. So then it tells me I need to do a system update. The thing is it was stuck on 0% of downloaded data for like 10 minutes. So I cancelled, went into settings and everything's fine. System is connected to my network, WAP key entered correctly, it's reading my IP. So I try to do the system update again. Nothing. It's been like half an hour now and still stuck on 0%

I've had a quick butchers on t'internet but it's proving to be fruitless. Just wondering if anyone else has encountered a problem like this, and more importantly, any ideas on how to fix it.

I think you can download the updates off the internet and put it on your ps3 with a usb stick or something.

In the future make sure you never turn it off while its updating or saving, always turn it off through the XMB shut down option or holding the power button down till it goes off.

Aye, he's right. Here's the guide including the download link.

I had problems with PSN a few days ago, kept saying it had encountered a problem and logging me out, seems to have been ok since (touch wood)

RIP my PS3 :(

2 years of gaming down the drain :(

Cheers man. This worked.

I always do this, I can't vouch for the lads though.

Thank you all for your input. Update now installed and business as usual. I just hope it does the next update automatically as I'm a lazy fecker. Cheers

Anyone any ideas on this problem............

Got Uncharted 2. Load the game and it says I need to download a software update 1.03.

So I press ok and the system is meant to quit and start installing the update. Problem is it doesnt do this it basically just makes the PS3 restart.

Other games and updates have worked recently.

I have a feeling you need to press the master reset and hold down both start and select.

This should reverse the polarity of the PS3's neutron flow, and allow the download to commence.

It is a long shot, as Weaste will tell you, but you can only try.

Good luck and Godspeed.

My 60GB PS3 died tonight. I bought the original one (I've had two re-furbishments from Sony) in June '07 so i'm well outside the warranty period.

The red light keeps flashing and won't turn on no matter what i do.

I'm annoyed as hell. £400 fecking quid for a piece of equipment thats barely lasted 2.5 years.

My mate had exactly the same problem just before Xmas and was told that it would cost £150 for Sony to repair it as his warranty had expired too.

I can't even go and buy a fecking slimline tomorrow as the south east of England has stopped functioning because of 4 inches of fecking snow!!

When was the last time you had it refurbed? I'm pretty sure once they refurbish it it comes with a 1 year warranty. I could be wrong, mind.

It was about March '08 mate and they told me that the warranty would not be extended :(

Ah right, that still sucks though. Do you still have the original receipt? You could take it back and quote the Sales of Goods Act at them.

I bought it off play.com and there receipts are like A4 sized. I don't think I kept it when I moved house last year :(

The issue is the cell. Tear that out, replace it with an intel processor and it should be fine.

Right I replaced my 60GB PS3 with a 250GB slimline on Saturday. I have noticed that both when the console is sitting idle on the main screen and during a game it emits an extreemly annoying high frequency noise.

Quite frankly it's driving me insane to the point that it's virtually unplayable.

My question is has/is anybody else experiencing this? It looks like a common issue (I googled) but some are saying it's just the norm for the slimline.

It's supposed to be 33% quieter than my old 60GB version but is in fact ten times as bad.

Recently, while playing GOW Collection I suddenly lost all sound apart from a high pitched constant whine. I switched channels, but nothing apart from the whine on any of them. Turning the tv off and back on again fixed it. It has happened a number of times since, on various games, and today while watching a dvd.

This has never happened while just watching tv. Is this a PS3/tv/none of the above issue? Anyone?

And by "anyone", I mean Weaste.

Well, you haven't steered me wrong yet, so I have faith in your diagnosis. I also happen to think you're right. It's not the tv, and as you say, it's obviously not the PS3.

How much would you recommend paying for a HDMI cable? When I bought my current one I saw them for less than £10.00 to over £90.00.

I bought mine from Game for a tenner and I've never had a problem. When I went to Curry's to buy a TV they tried selling me a gold-plated one for £50 but apparently it doesn't even make that much difference.

Pick em up from tescos and asda for a fiver now.

Don't go silly with it, one for a tenner should do the job. Have you checked that the connections are not loose also?
Yes. I've tried it in two different HDMI slots as well.

I am interested as to why some of these cables are so expensive. There must be a market for them.

You really do need high quality cables once it gets over 3m in length. Below that it's just a con.

The problem with the PS3 is that it always needs a HDCP (copy protection) handshake over HDMI, if something goes wrong with that then all sorts of shit can happen - including the screen flickering on and off like feck.

My PS3 died on me whilst watching stuff via external HDD. It made a triple peeping noise and shut off with the red light blinking. If you press the power button once it looks like it's shut off. If you press it again it will make the regular peeping noise but then goes straight back into shutting itself off again.

Basically it won't turn on.

It's my refurbished nr. 3 so my 4th PS3 all in all. Can't get another one because I've move countries. All the refurbished ones I've got have lasted less than half a year. I basically think Sony is a scum company now but I'm a slave to console gaming and I don't like Wii or XBox :(

Have you been sending them back to Sony? How much for?

My understanding is that if it's out of warranty, they will just repair your unit for a price? Not send a refurb. If you using Sony and they are still in warranty, it should not matter if you've moved country.

Iv'e discovered, from personal experienced, once you get the YLOD, which sounds like what you've got. Your better off replacing the PS3.

I wonder if different countries use different thermal pastes. I've got around 7 mates with ps3's. All 40gb ones brought between jan 1st 2008 and september 2008, and none of us have had ylod. Perhaps given the hot condition of Australia, Sony implemented a better paste 'although unlikely', but a 0/8 'including myself' failure rate nearly over a 4 year period is remarkable.

There's no such thing like that in Iceland. We pretty much don't have customer service for gadgets.
There's one place that's licensed from Sony to handle the PS3 malfunctions but they're not allowed to open them and see what's wrong and fix them. Doesn't matter what's wrong, you just get a refurb right away if you still have warranty.

I know I'm better off replacing it. It would just be nice to be able to back up the stuff off my HDD.
And I've got no idea where I'd go to get a replacement.

My original PS3, the one that lasted by far the longest, malfunctioned right after a firmware update which changed the speed of the BluRay laser. When I googled my problem back then it seemed to happen a lot to people around the world after the same firmware update.

If you get a new one, just stick your old HDD into the new one, pull off everything that you want to keep, replace it with the HDD in the new one and put everything back on.

You can't put an HDD into a different PS3 without formatting it. As soon as you start the PS3 with a different one in it'll tell you to format it before you can use it.
