My PS3 has just suddenly stopped reading any game that i put in, anyone got any advice on what i can do to fix it?

The first test you do is try it with Blu-ray movies, DVDs, and CDs. If it will not read any of them, then the entire drive is fannied. If it will read DVDs and CDs but not Blu-ray movies, the blue-violet laser has gone.

I was expecting some sort of dig at the PS3 from 1871_NobBiscuit, I'm impressed.
Early 40GBs batches were prone to this when they changed the drive to take out SACD support.
Its wrong to kick Sony when they're all ready down.
That's what I was going to say (Well, not about the SACD support 'cos I don't know what that is, but the fact a few of them had problems)
Just give Sony a ring and they should replace it for you no probs, they're meant to be good like that.
If it hasn't been a year since you bought it, then just call up sony and they will send you a new one with in a week. Similar issue occured for me and i recieved a Brand New one in 4 days.
Nice new law in Europe over this type of thing. 2 years minimum guarantee.
It would be interesting to see % figures of drive failures on PS3 vs stand-alone Blu-ray players. Could it be a problem that Sony Electronics didn't really think about heavy random access when they designed the drives? A film for example is a very linear/sequential read type of a beast.

Do a system reset as that is the first thing sony will suggest on the phone, and then if it is still broken call them and they will arrange for a courier to come and swap a new console for your current one. No worries about receipts etc they wont even ask for anything like that.
