Have read around the Internet for a while and come to the conclusion that I need to trash my fat PS3 :( The machine won't read any games, haven't tried with DVDs or Bluray discs yet because I have none. I just did the system update (3.55) today and I think it may have cause my laser diodes to burn out.

Can anybody confirm this? Weaste? PLEASEEEEEE

Hate to be the bearer of bad news mate but i got that error when the drive on my 80gig fatty started playing up.

Mine didn't die straight away though. At first i could eject and re-insert the disk and it would read. It gradually took longer to get it to read and around 4 weeks after the first error i gave up when one day i was sat trying for over 30 minutes with no result.

Here is a post i made a few days ago about it:

DVDs are fine. BD movies or games don't work.

When i insert the BD i get a sound that i think is the lens moving or trying to move. Usually you would then hear the disk spin up (try it yourself) but it doesn't....instead i get another sound (around a second or so after the first sound) that's like the lens has stopped moving/trying to move. Around 6 or seven seconds later i get another sound like it's trying again. Around 10 seconds later i get the sound that's like it's stopped again and it seemingly gives up trying. All the while this is happening, the 'activity' indicator clock is spinning in the top right corner of the XMB screen until the last sound i mentioned where it goes back to showing the time.

Not sure if my descriptions are accurate as to what is actually happening but that's how i envisaged things. :)

Are you getting similar symptoms from yours?

I got the game going this morning but suddenly in a match the radar and scoreboard disappeared, as did the commentary sound. When I restart the game it refuses to load, and I can hear the disc reader working hard but nothing getting anywhere. Seems like mine too will gradually fade away, my ps3 that is.

Yeah, similar thing happened to me. If i tried to just restart the game from the XMB without ejecting and re-inserting first the XMB would disappear but instead of the screen going black and the game starting it would just freeze on the XMB background with the disk trying to read evey few seconds.

I got about 2 weeks out of mine once i got that error.

That is terribly worrying considering I've got no warranty. May need to go buy myself a slim version now. I'm 100% sure the firmware (latest update) caused the hardware failure, fecking Sony.

Very likely it was a coincidence. But from what you are saying exact same issue happened to mine around the time GTAIV was released, playing fine one minute then the next the road started dissapearing and eventually it would freeze, drive failure.

Would you trash it? I mean you can still browse the web and watch DVDs etc?

Yeah, it was almost certainly a coincidence.

Makes no sense that a firmware update would somehow interfere with the optic reading of discs.

"Lets sum it all up, the error is not hardware related and is caused due to corruption of firmware. Restoring you PS3 will not roll back the firmware, and unfortunately will not fix the issue 9 times out of 10. If you are receiving this error, contact Sony for a replacement unit. Again I hope none of my readers have to see the dreaded 80010514 error and by following Gamerevolver.com’s simple steps your bound to prolongue the life of your PS3 indefinitely. "

feck, I genuinly thought I fixed it by restoring corrupt system files, the game was ran perfectly, I played an exhibition match end around the 80th minute menus disappeared and a couple of minutes later the game froze :( I thought maybe the game worked because of the repairing of system files but apparently it was one blip in the gradual decline into trash.
