300 quid for 80GB PS3, with Ratchet and Clank, and Uncharted, and 2 controllers if i'm not mistaken. What says you caftards?

Weigh this up against an X-Box 360 Elite, with one controller and one game for 215 pounds.

I had a 360 before, but i bought it in thailand and its an NTSC-J meaning i can't buy any games for it here.

You can always download games for 360. It's so easy that kids are doing it everywhere here.

300 quid seems a little steep to me.

if im not wrong it should be 769.58 Singapore dollars.

2 games should be worth around 200 Sing.

The console itself is £299.99, with a DualShock 3.

For an extra one pence, you are getting 2 of the best games on PS3 and an extra dualshock.

I think i may just splurge on the PS3 smurf, especially with Versus coming out. A mate of mine has a ps3 at home, which he said he might sell for cheaper, with a couple of games, so i'll see what he's offering first.

Go for it Colin, you won't regret it:D

And I didn't know you were an FF Fan, one more thing (To add to the many) we have in common;)

I never really played FF properly, as i didn't have a ps2 and only really played winning eleven on ps1. Used to play it a bit at my cousin's place and always liked it there. Versus looks like it'll be brilliant as well.

Tell me how.

Yeah... but how do you get pirated games. I thought he meant you could download them yourself, and rip them to DVD. Would you not need a chipped Xbox.

I'm not very up on it, maybe someone could tell us, but as far as I remember from what I have read, this type of copy protection of the disks is done on the level of the DVD drive, so you just have to modify something in that.

I was thinking some weeks back about posting a thread about this issue, and whether the ability to run pirated games could sway people into buying the hardware. I just never got around to it and then forgot.

You can download the games from certain sites then as you say put them on to DVD. However, for them to work you have to as you call it "chip" your xbox, and obviously doing this breaks your warrinty and if you do just one thing wrong you have a fecked xbox with no warranty.

I was gonna do this a while back but opted out as Live is just wonderfull

I'd say it is definitely a factor Weaste. I know i took it into consideration when i bought my xbox in thailand. All i have are pirated copies on the xbox, and seeing as it is region protected, i can't buy any originals in Dubai. Now that they've cracked down hard on pirated games in Dubai, and it seems to be impossible to find any anywhere anymore, i've now got a 360 sitting in the corner gathering dust.

If your Xbox is already able to read pirated copies, without you having to get a chip, can't you just download your games then?

I second this.

You'll first need to "chip" your xbox, as said. It's not a very big process actually, just getting some gameshop guy to modify your xbox360 to remove the copy protection. Live wouldnt' detect that.

Then, just download a game from any site, burn it to a dvd, and you can play the game. Yeah. dont play it live as said, you'll get your membership revoked.

Also, with the modification, you can play any area code dvds and games now. that, however, wouldnt revoke your membership.

i bought the xbox with the chip already installed Top, and SiYuan it cannot play any area code games.

Don't have a DVD burner Top

Same old then, I wish to keep live so its a no from me.

Oh and another plus for the PS3 - it's region free

Surely worth getting one then?
Would only cost you around £20 and you'd then be able to play every single game available - free (except for the cost of a DVD)

Better than it just collecting dust in the corner.

It's interesting that some people took it into consideration. Did you only do it for the region control aspect, or more of a monetary one?

would NTSC-J games be readily accessible for download?

i didn't know about the region control aspect, that's the thing. It was completely a monetary thing, as i figured i would then be able to get whatever game i wanted in Dubai, without having to worry about saving up money. It would also mean i wouldn't have to choose one game over another, i could just get both.

Now that there don't seem to be any pirated games for sale in Dubai anymore, i'm rather stuffed.

Interesting. So is "chipping" something i could do myself?

My xbox's warranty is already broken, as i sent it to a workshop to have some work on it.

Just did a search on mininova, and most of the games are stated as "region free"
I do however not own an xbox, so I'm not sure, I just wanted to help.

I would say yes, definitely.

Its tricky with the Xbox for many reasons (LIVE, Warranty-RROD) but a better example may be the Wii - Wii mod chip - I don't know much about it but I've thought about getting one and maybe doing this.

How much did the original playstation benefit from this? I knew heads with stacks of copied games - they wouldn't have bought all of them for sure. Then again that is talking about games there, maybe they'd still buy the console anyway... Maybe it won't effect it for one console as much but for a person to go out and buy the other consoles as well.

So if i have a chipped Xbox, and play official games on live, then surely that would be ok. Its only if i play pirated games online, yeah?

I've heard two different stories, not sure which is true.

1) Microsoft can detect a hacked xbox through Live in any game played, apparantly this happend to a guy when he was playing an official version of Halo online

2) is basicaly your theory

It's a risk either way
