I use my PS3 to watch all sorts of downloaded movies (all entirely legal - promise) but it annoys me that some types of avi won't play.

So is there a decent codec pack for the PS3?

Stream from PC to PS3 with tversity.

Or convert them with someone called redkawa

Only ways I have found, most avi's don't play on the ps3 I have found heh

Or do you have to download and install an OS like Linux?

Or are there official PS3 codec packs?

or?

90% of the ones I download do but the exceptions are annoying.

I might try that redkawa software because I tend to play films from DVD's I burn. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks.

redkawa is excellent imo, 4-5 films on one disc, then you can either just keep the disc and play them from that, or put them onto the ps3.

I now tend to put them onto my phone, take them and put them on the ps3 and then I'm sorted, store on computer if they're any good, delete altogether if it was crap :D

Glad I could help

I haven't been that impressed with RedKawa because the conversion takes ages and the audio is often out of sync so badly as to make the film unwatchable.

The main files I have problems with are .mkv files which i think are usually ripped from HD sources.

I lucked across a quick and easy solution here

This bit of software changes it from an mkv containers to a m2ts container which the PS3 plays.

This takes about 30 seconds rather than the eternity that RedKawa takes to convert files. When streaming via TVersity you need to add .mp4 to the file name so that TVersity shows the file although I assume the if you burn to disc to use in your PS3 you don't need to do this second step.

Quick, easy and it worked for me. Enjoy.
