housemates PS3 broke about a week ago, with the upshot that he had to buy a new one since it was out of warranty

however, we had loads of save game points and stuff on it that we cant transfer

you cant just take the hard drive out and put it in a new unit since its tracked by the serial number or something like that

the guy in the console repair shop we spoke too said that the only thing you can do is repair your old one then transfer the info to the new one

seems a bit silly to me, is there no other way around it?

Why dont they record your save game points to your internet account to make it easier?

Maybe he should have done a backup every now and then?

Because PSN is free, maybe these new subscription based services will include storing your save games in the cloud, maybe not?

The reason the HDD is locked to the PS3 is for security reasons. You can stick it into another PS3, but it will insist on reformatting it first.

EDIT: Sony would repair it, for €150.

the guy in the repair shop said that he could repair the fault but that in his experience it would reoccur again within 6 months - a year, thats why he took the decision to upgrade to the newer version

Well, tell him to make sure to do backups this time. A decent sized USB memory stick should do the job.

Trophies are stored online, as long as they are properly synced.

What is he doing with the old one, putting it in the bin?

£30 on ebay'd get him a refurb that he could sell.
