I'm getting a PS3 tomorrow and am a little confused as I had a wander around the shops today and there seemed to be 3 options.

80gig (this was for sale in every shop at £299 with a couple of games)

60gig (this was £249 second hand in blockbuster)

160gig from Currys (£341.46)
Comes with 4 FREE Downloadable games
EA Sports FIFA 09
Little Big Planet
WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009

Is there any difference in the machines (reliability, speed, etc) apart from the HDD size?

Cheers.

60gig is discontinued (thats why its second hand) but its the only one that can actually play PS2 games. £250 is also a steal for it (they tend to go for much higher). Also has an SD slot if im not mistaken?

The rest of the models dont have backwards compatibility, but besides that theyre all the same with the exception of HDD space.

Buy a Wii if you want to play BioShock 2.

I went for the 80 gig with Little big planet and Call of Duty: World at war or £299.99

Decided I would not need the backwards compatable feature and the 160gig was sold out and they did not know when they were getting any in stock.

It's just updating the system as I write this!

Sure Zavvi were doing an 80g at around £270 or something. They have a few deals seen as the mess they are in. Probably store/are dependant though as they shift stock. Anyway looks like you got a decent deal.

Weaste you seems to know what's good or not.

I'm looking to update my ps3 hardrive to much bigger size between 160 and 320. Do you know of any hard drives that I can trust. I don't want to upgrade and have it fry on me :(.

Seagate are normally good hard-drives. Hitachi as well. Western Digital maybe one's that you want to avoid, although nothing majorly wrong with them, they are generally cheaper as well.

Isn't it rare for hard-drives to fail nowadays? Especially within the few years time frame you will be using it. Just make sure you get the specs right, like 2.5", SATA, and 5400rpm.

Another question for Weaste - do people not go for the 7200rpm drives? Or is there no point? Any possible extra power / heat problems?

More Ps3 Advice Please

my 60gb hard drive is now practically full up so i'm going to upgrade.

i've a few queries regarding the backing up of stuff, basically i'm concerned as i dont have a storage device big enough to hold all my restore information so:

rather than back up the files onto another storage device can i not just change the discs then put the original disc into a usb device type external holder thingy (i'm not very technical you see) and restore the files direct from there?

if not, can i back up to and then restore from my laptop in some way?

or i have a second ps3 (80GB) which i just use for blu ray so theres plenty of space on it, can i use that in some way to back up my items and then restore from there?

quick (but completly accurate) reponses would be appreciated as i hope to carry all this out before kick off!

thanks.

thanks for your response you clearly know your stuff however i dont and i'm still a little unsure as to the best way to approach this.

if using the 80gb model means formatting the disc, and therefore losing all the data on it, i'd rather not as although i predominately use it for blu ray it also has the missus' crap on it (singstar, buzz -the usual stereotypically-female nonsense)

my ps3 is currently at 9850 MB / 55GB which is game data, saves and system stuff only - i've removed all pictures, movies and other stuff (themes, old game data and things)

i have a hard drive out of my old sony vaio which is formatted in FAT32 but which comes up as 2 discs (folders?) one at 18.6GB and 1 at 13.1GB

i have my shiny new 320gb hard drive (still in its sexy silver coat)

and i have a USB interface for 2.5" devices

if you have the time and could be so kind as to explain, in a manner which a learned gentleman might explain the workings of the steam engine to a retarded female, the best way you would approach this project with the tools i have i would eternally be in your debt

Things such as game installs you don't need to backup (I'm not even sure it will bother doing this - delete them first), as those games that need installs (some are 5GB+) will simply reinstall when you next put the disc in. Anything that you have downloaded from PS Store in terms of paid games etc. you can simply redownload. There are two folders under game, one is Game Data Utility (you don't need this stuff), and the other is Save Data Utility (these are you game saves that you want to keep).

All you really need are the settings and the game saves, just make sure that you sync the trophies as they will not be backed up, they are stored on the PSN servers liked to your account. 18GB should be enough if all you have are settings and game saves, try it first by connecting that to the PS3 with tour USB cable.

As I stated, the problem with PS3 is that if you take the drive out, nothing else can read it, not even another PS3.
