Does anyone know when it is released in Australia, as i am in Australia for about 1 month before returning back. I think it would be cheaper over here.

However cant see any 80Gb model only sh*te 40gb ones.

Does anyone know when are they coming out?

Why are 40GB shite and 80GB great?

Here is comparison

The major difference is the backwards compatability of the systems. The 60GB is the BEST as it has every original features.

$400.00:
Hard Drive: 40GB
USB Ports: 2
Colors: Black, White(Asia Only)
Wi-Fi: Yes
Flash Card Reader: No
Chrome Trim: Yes
SACD Playback: No
PS2 Compatibility: 0%

$500.00
Hard Drive: 60GB
USB Ports: 4
Colors: Black
Wi-Fi: Yes
Flash Card Readers: Yes
Chrome Trim: Yes
SACD Playback: Yes
PS2 Playback: 98%

$600.00
Hard Drive: 80GB
USB Ports: 4
Colors: Black
Wi-Fi: Yes
Flash Card Reader: Yes
Chrome Trim: Yes
SACD Playback: Yes
PS2 Playback: 70-80%

They can all play PS1 games though. Also, the 80GB and 40GB versions produce less heat from its CPU. Less heat, quieter fan, slightly cheaper electric bill.

So basically the biggest difference is that I can't play PS2 games on my 40GB, while I could have played them if I had bought the more expensive one.

Not like I was intending to go back and play the same games again though.

Two USB ports is a bit of a setback if I'm going to buy cheaper pads that require you to use the USB ports.

USB ports are setback, Apart from card reader, which i really don't want to use. PS2 compatability is added advantage for classics such as FF series,

Also, BTW, Australia is under the same region as Europe is it not? It's SCEE territory? In that case, the 80GB was released and is known as the 60GB, but no longer sold (unless you can find somewhere with old stock).

What you refer to the 60GB model was the top end launch system in Japan and North America.

I got confused.

Are there any PS3s other than 40GB on the market currently then?

It goes a bit like this:

20GBUJ/60GBUJ - US/JAP only - Features: The lot (20GB has no card readers or WiFi). No longer in production.
60GBEU - Europe only - Features: As above 60GB minus PS2 CPU - handled now in software. No longer in production.
80GBUJ - US/JAP only - Features: As above, 20GB larger HDD. No longer in production IMO.
40GBWW - Worldwide - Features: -2 USB, -Card readers, -SACD, PS2 Graphics Hardware removed, no longer backwards compatible (whether they can find a software solution is up in the air). Only motherboard unit in production IMO.

Then, whynot just keep your PS2?

Always baffles me when the 40GB version gets labelled shit, which it of course isn't, yet it gets labelled this by the same people who didn't want to pay for the 60GB model:wenger:

I also don't understand how a lack of USB ports is a setback. Sure, it's nice to have them, but as I've said before, I've never used more than two at once. What am I going to stick in them? Recharge 4 controllers at the same time?

The major cockup was not putting some/them on the back.

This!

The early adopters you could say got rewarded.

Indeed they did. It's isn't like those who wanted a 60GB console didn't have ample time to get one either. They were warned months in advance it was being replaced by the 40GB model and that they would lose some (albeit minor) features to the console.

Like yourself I've never used more than two at a time and I have only ever done that once. And if people are really that bothered they can just buy a USB hub. Other than that I just use the one slot to recharge my controller. I imagine one will be used though when PlayTv is released. Agreed they should have had at least 1 at the back, would have been ideal to have the PlayTv connected to the back rather than at the front but we can't have everything I suppose.

Just a note though surely Sony removing 2 USB ports couldn't have saved them all that much money? You can buy them dirt cheap now. I suppose though spread over millions of consoles this little saving will turn into a big amount.

What if you're PS2 is broken?

What if 40GB isnt enough space? (it isnt for my xbox 360)

and the 40GB sacrifices that awesome looking silver chrome finish for some ugly paint job.

All these add up for me im afraid.

What if you're PS2 is broken?

I saw a second hand one for £40 in GAME the other day, if you're that bothered about PS2 games you'd buy one. Saying that the last PS2 game I played was FFX - a year ago.

What if 40GB isnt enough space? (it isnt for my xbox 360)

Unlike your 360 the PS3's HDD can be upgraded to any 2.5" SATA hard drive, so you can pick up a bigger hard drive for a pretty low price.

Well, like I said before, you should have got a 60GB while you had the chance. Sony warned everybody they were going to stop production.

And if you really want one that badly, you'll just pay a few extra quid and get one of ebay/Amazon etc.

Game saves, game installs, films, tv shows, photos, game trailers, movie trailers and games downloaded from the ps store.

I have around 4gb of space left on my PS3, one more game install left!

That's it, it doesn't sound like much does it, even an external card reader only costs about 5 quid, but if that 5 quid is a loss and it is a loss over millions of units, it's something you can do without. I expect to see their return once the machine itself becomes profitable for them. They just took it down to the bare minimum of what PS3 (not PS2) needs.

What if you're PS2 is broken?

Then buy another PS2, because at least they still manufacture and support it.

In a way they have created this nonsense for themselves by making PS2 fully backwards compatible with Playstation. Before then consoles and even many home computers did not do this (quite a few A500 games will not run on my A1200) - now it's expected? GTFO! The one thing they did was totally underestimate how difficult it is to emulate the Graphics Synthesizer - that funny little chip does some weird and whacky things at silly speeds. PS3 was never supposed to have PS2 hardware in it, that was a panic measure.

Is it at all possible to have the 40GB PS3 made BC through a firmware update? And if so do you think Sony will do it?

He's been told this at least 5 times already, but it goes straight over his head.

He's one of those though isn't he:D

Oh, it's "possible", but not easy. Unless they try for the XB360 solution where you actually have to have code for each game - ie. you cannot just stick in a game disk and it works unless it is "supported". Sony will not do it on a game by game basis. Adverts have been seen in the Japanese press advertising for backwards compatibility engineers, but that could be for anything, and they did at one point have a large team on it because full PS2 software emulation was the original goal. How big that team now is and how many resources it gets is unknown.

See, if it is too difficult I would rather they focus all their resources on making the PS3 the best it can be. Like I mentioned earlier, I have only played 1 PS2 game on my PS3 in the 15 or so months I have had it, and with the line-up the PS3 has over the next 12 months aswell, I doubt I will be playing a PS2 game any-time soon.

How do you find out how much space is left?

Right thanks for that. I will check on that later when I also do the update.

Are you confusing it for the 20GB US/JAP launch model? I've never actually seen a 40GB, but from images it looks the same to me.

 at this in any case.

Do you ever listen to anything anyone says to you?

The 40GB has the chrome trim, it looks EXACTLY the same as a 60GB European box or a 60GB US box, the only difference being fewer holes on the front and the removal of the SACD writing on the side.

The image you have posted, if you look at the name of the file "playstation3_20_60.jpg", is 20_60, thus the two lauch models for US/JAP.

I don't actually think he is looking for one.

I was wondering at that picture then because the one I have is 40gb and was sure it has the white chrome trim thing.

It looks pretty slick for a console in real life, better than the Xbox and 360 - which I have access to in the house just don't use.
