P-Nut Tactics

460 formation / 370 formation

Aim is to dominate possession and use rapid wingers to get in behind when required.

Giggs and Salah play their most devastating roles as flying wingers, Giggs being more orthodox on the left ensuring width is provided and keeping the pitch big in build up phases. Salah in his Liverpool role needs no explanation.

Hidegkuti plays in a false 9 role, overloading the middle of the park and affording Xavi extra time and space.

Nedved is a floating 10, likely to do most of his work out wide switching each side to provide overloads.

Xavi is the anchor of the side, keeping everything ticking over in the middle.

Sammer has license to play his natural game, due to sheer numbers in the middle of the park. He can drop into the centre of defense and push the full backs forward, plus step into midfield to provide more steel when required.

Defence is quite self explanatory with Maldini and Campbell comfortable in wider areas to cover for the wing backs when they push on and Sammer drops in.

BIG DUNK Tactics

DEFENDING

A wonderfully organised back four, marshalled by Gaetano Scirea. Both Scirea and Khurtsilava are intelligent defenders, possessing excellent positioning, making clean and perfectly timed interceptions and supreme readers of the game. Both my centrebacks are excellent on the ball too, but here Scirea will be my ball-playing libero and Khurtsilava given more of the man-marking duties. Where Scirea or Khurtsilava step forward higher up the pitch into the build-up phase, Marcel Desailly can fill in at the back. Carlos Alberto and Denis Irwin are two fantastic two-way fullbacks who are solid defenders. On the left flank, Irwin would get defensive support from Wim van Hanegem and Carlos Alberto would get support from Pirri. Desailly would perform a masterclass in playing the defensive anchor in midfield. Protecting my back four and breaking up play in midfield. Both Pirri and van Hanegem will cover a lot of ground. When defending deep our compact shape will resemble a tightly spaced Xmas tree, hard to penetrate and get behind. With no archetypal #9 to man-mark, Desailly and Scirea can help to nullify any false #9s/free-role/withdrawn forwards. Deyna can help cutting passing lanes in advanced/central areas. Both Muller and Batistuta were also known to drop back/wide and help with defensive duties. Any one of Pirri-Desailly-van Hanegem have the positional intelligence, stamina and technical ability to play deepest or surge forward (box-to-box). Shilton is the archetypal goalkeeper in terms of consistency, shot-stopping and organising. A team full of leadership, positional/tactical intelligence and big game players.

CREATIVITY & GOALSCORING

A team both comfortable in possession and dangerous on the counter attack. Van Hanegem is highly influential as the deeper playmaker. Scirea also contributes to build up play (carrying the ball, direct long balls, pass-and-move attacks). Deyna is my advanced playmaker, the complete facilitator: through-balls, one-touch flicks, long range passes, short metronome passes, crosses (both curled and driven), sharp cut-backs from wide. Pirri, van Hanegem and Deyna had immense attacking output (goals and assists) from their respective midfield roles. Carlos Alberto and Irwin will provide width and attacking support: Irwin with accurate crosses and runs, Carlos Alberto contributing with more possession focused drives forward, relying on his ball skills and passing ability. Both Carlos Alberto and Irwin are also known for scoring important goals. Pirri and van Hanegem can help with the build-up play in those inside/wide spaces on their respective flanks. Both Khurtsilava and Desailly can become extra attackers, driving through lanes with their powerful runs: Khurtsilava with a long-range powerful shot, Desailly with a slalom run and cool finish. All this creativity and attacking-output supports two of the most prolific goalscorers of all time: Muller and Batistuta. Two highly intelligent and lethal forwards ahead of the midfield diamond. Muller is the most dangerous striker in the box of all time, while also offering so much more: direct pass and move, false #9 contribution, off-ball movement, extra man in midfield when needed, big game clutch ability. Batistuta was immense alongside a playmaker and other forward – here he completes a strike partnership with Muller, assisted by Deyna. Batistuta can strike from far, run with the ball with power and pace, assist his teammate, or finish nearer to goal from the crosses/through-balls he receives. We are very dangerous at set-pieces too: Irwin, Deyna and van Hanegem contributing to a plethora of crossing/set-piece options, and the likes of Muller, Batistuta, Pirri and Desailly menaces in the box.

Two really strong teams, but I think I would have preferred Maldini on the left and Sammer as more of a DM too.

I think Dunk is lacking a more roaming striker up top who would run the channels and provide width (Batistuta can do it, but would prefer his aerial ability and and two footed finishing in the box)

Alberto and Irwin are great picks though and the midfield would be tough to break down. The finishers are there, so I will give this one to Dunk, just about.

Hidegkuti as False 9 is brilliant but that midfield is screaming for a dedicated defensive presence. Sammer as pure DM would be better than his libero role.

Near perfect team from Dunk!

I liked the fluidity of him being able to pick and choose when to step into midfield and when to drop into defence.

With Maldini and Campbell as the other 2 CBs it gives the option either way to switch between the 2 depending on how the game goes.

We can add numbers to the midfield go suffocate the game or if we're under the cosh he can drop into defence and allow the wing backs to be the out ball
