Pro cyclist Wouter Weylandt dies after crash in Giro d´Italia

It looked very bad immediately as it happened. The commentator on Flemish television immediately feared the worst. Unfortunately he was right.

And his wife is pregnant with their first as well. Very sad news this.
 
Shocking and sad. So young and doing what he loves and is best at. RIP.

When I saw it on TV it looked as though his entire ribcage was knocked out of position and obviously his face was smashed. fecking horrific scenes, but at least it would've been instant. RIP.
 
I watched the video someone posted up elsewhere, I wish I hadn't.

Tragic.
 
I don't want to watch it but did a camera car run over him or was it a bunch of cyclists?
 
Don't think anyone ran him over. At about 80 km/h his pedal hit the guard rail which somehow caused him to get smashed into the mountain wall on the other side of the road before tumbling some 60 meters. He was rumored to have a pulse when they flew him to hospital 40 minutes later, but the race doc today confirmed that he died instantly.
 
I'm a tad belated with this thread...

I was off that day recovering from a stag in Edinburgh & watched it live on Eurosport at home. Wish the feck i had of went to work tbh... Bloody surreal it was, one minute i was chilled watchin all the lovely scenery in Italy, then there's a helicopter tryin endlessly to lower the bucket to medics below, but the chopper couldnt find an easy place due to the mountain range. It was terrible, the commentator was pretty fecked up about it, really stressing...

RIP Wouter & best regards to his wife & unborn baby :(
