Premier League to announce new European u-21 competition

Great news. Good competition and gives our lads more games. When Schalke's academy director is behind it I think it has to be good. Hope we get to play them.

Sounds good.Hopefully the format allowed teams to play a decent number of games regardless of how they perform in the competition.I like how Milk Cup was structured despite it's not really fair in term of ranking.

To be honest I don't really mind who or where we're playing as long as we're getting a decent number of games. It's been too sparse for too long now.

Heard we're considering some fixtures playing against grown men (would be friendlies I guess) so there would be more to come.

Good good. Always thought we should to arrange more friendlies against senior sides. After all, if we can't have a B-team league, we can create the same effect by organising lots of one-off matches against lower-league senior teams.

I'm angry and confused.

Nah but it is a bit weird. Are Chelsea and City really going to do both this and the Under 19 champions league?

Still, good stuff is happening at Under 21 level. This is the 4th format in 4 years in the league, going from a north and south reserve league to a weird triple league system to a league of 22 to a league of 12.

edit: for some reason I thought it was more than 8.

u21 seems a bit strange: most of the guys who turn into good players already broke into first team by then

This is a great idea! Our youth players coming through need to be much better, especially if we want to win anything at international level ever again. This will help us massively in the Champions League.

That's what I thought. Pretty much every great talent between 18 and 21 in Germany is already part of the first team squads and the other ones are usually playing competitive football in the 3rd or 4th league with the reserve teams. Not sure why that guy from Schalke is so excited. I can see why it makes more sense in England though.

Nah this is an amazing idea.

Under 21 now has a double round robin league (just like the prem) and a European cup competition (just like the prem). This gives all the under 21s actual decent experience even if they can't get into the first team.

Under 19 shadows the champions league, and there is also the youth FA Cup.

Totally awesome

England has a very old league, where the clubs like to buy the end product @RedSky

So you want to improve by building on a bad foundation? Either English clubs are too 'stupid' to realize the potential of their academies then quotas will probably help or the products of their academies are not good enough then some rules regarding infrastructure and/or coaching are needed.

Looks like the format for each group is two English teams plus two foreign teams.Would love us to play City,Benfica and Schalke from this lot.

Hope there are home and away fixtures like the CL.The more games for the youngsters the better.

More games can only be a good thing at this level, though doubt it will help us to much in terms of development. At that level the truely top prospects have generally already started playing or being a part of the first team.

Also travelling to away games in Spain and Portugal would be a good experience too.. Would have been brilliant if this competition was in a League format.

No doubt trying to get their hand in on any money making. The only reason they made the youth CL was because the nextgen series was making money without them.

Of course they are, they aren't involved. It is the same that they made sure they got involved in the U19 CL and forced the NextGen series to fold. The more tournaments/mini leagues set-up without the influence of their shite the better.

Uefa dont give the go ahead to things unless they see them as their idea. They will more than likely change a few rules and details and have their own competition set up next year the same way as they did when bringing in the Uefa Youth League and putting an end to the Next Gen competition.

More Info from the Telegraph:

But Uefa ruled that it would only be allowed to stage such a competition within England and not across the whole of the continent. A Uefa spokesman said: “The Uefa executive committee felt that this competition was not in the overall interests of European football.”

The revelation follows Uefa’s announcement that its own under-19 Youth League would become a permanent fixture from next season, following a successful inaugural year. It will double in size from 32 clubs — those in the Champions League — to include as well 32 domestic youth league champions.

The Premier League’s competition would have featured Chelsea, Fulham, Leicester City, Manchester City, Manchester United, Southampton, West Ham United and Sunderland, plus Celtic, Athletic Bilbao, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Benfica, Schalke, Porto, PSV Eindhoven and Villarreal.

Did Uefa give permission for the NextGen series to go ahead in the first place or why do we even need their back for this? I don't see what this really has to do with them. Tell them to feck off and do the tournament anyway.

Indeed. It's essentially a friendly tournament. What on earth is it do with them.

UEFA have a lot of reign when tournaments have UEFA places on the end of them, but I dont understand this for the life of me.

Yeah they initially gave it their backing but warned them that they had been thinking of something similar but just hadnt implemented it then when they saw the success it was getting they launched the Uefa Youth League which meant that the Next Gen Series lost almost all of their funding.

Why have we done that? Bizarre.

Wtf ? Why the hell would be opt out ?

We also opt out from the domestic cup. despite lack of fixtures. Weird.
