Danny Welbeck has recalled playing in the Manchester United Premier Cup ahead of this year's tournament in Shanghai.

The Reds' Under-15s are one of 20 teams taking part in the World Finals of the event with the opening ceremony and draw taking place this Saturday evening. The matches will be played at Shanghai Shenhua's training ground from 22 July with the final at the Shanghai National Stadium as a curtain-raiser for next Wednesday's big DHL tour game between the Reds and Didier Drogba's Shenhua.

Welbeck admits playing in the MUPC, which has been developed by Nike since 1993, was a magical moment in his young career.

“I remember being amazed at my MUPC experience in Hong Kong," said Welbeck. "Of course Fabio and Rafael (then playing for Brazilian side Fluminense) were outstanding but the level of ability from players in every team surprised me – and every match we played presented a different set of challenges.

"Although it was a steep learning curve, I think that facing top international competition at just 15 years of age gives you an understanding of just how much work it’s going to take – both individually and as a team – if you want to make it to the top level in football.

"My advice to the kids in Shanghai would be to listen to their coaches, learn as much as possible and enjoy their football. Whatever happens, they will have great memories of this special event."

United squad (alphabetical order): Borthwick-Jackson, Carroll, Dearnley, De Brito, Dorrington, Greenop, Henderson, Johnson, Makela, Mitchell, Rashford, Savill, Scott, Smith, Tuanzebe, Williams.

This Faustin Makela played in the recent Ajax cup didn't he?
Despite being ridiculously young. Also Mitchell and Borthwick-Jackson.

Makela played in the Marveld tournament. The other two played in both Marveld and the Aegon Tournament hosted by Ajax

I know it's been asked a few times, so apologies if anyone finds it irritating, is Rhain Davis still with United? he must be getting close to this age group now.

Manchester United 0 - 2 Boca Juniors
Dinamo Zagreb 0 - 0 Manchester United

United last after day one.

1 point from 3 and no goals scored....not the best of starts

Shanghai FA 1 - 0 Manchester United
Manchester United 0 - 0 Ajax Cape Town

2 points after the group and last place.

Very surprising considering how well they did at Marveld and how highly-rated some of the squad are. Stronger opposition perhaps but you wonder if the conditions have played a big part.

MUPC: Manchester United 2 - 0 Keilor Park.
The u-15s will now play Hubei FA for 17th-18th place.

The team finished 17th that year and quite a few of the group have gone on to have decent enough careers.

Resuts being;
UNAM Pumas 0-0 Manchester United
Ulsan Hyundai 1-1 Manchester United
Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Manchester United
RCD Espanyol 2-0 Manchester United
Manchester United 2-0 Tai Po
Manchester United 4-3 Chonburi

Just for perspective. Have patience with young players.

That looks like Will Keane in the front row(extreme right), doesn't it?
He would have been 12 in that picture though.

Assume it is him, given the 'WK' on his boots.

Had no idea he played that year - only have full squads going back to 2006. A good three years ahead of his age group, very interesting.
