I am looking for a particular one. I haven't seen it since I was a kid, and can't really remember any details, but I have a feeling it's a classic. Something I remember is that the hero looks for something in some ruins, that turns out to be the White House. I hope someone can point me in the right direction...

Any good post apocalyptic movies you can recommend?

Mad Max of course... Delicatessan, Soylent Green, Twelve Monkeys, Akira(anime), Ergo Proxy(anime).

Logan's Run might be the one you're thinking of.

Are you thinking of the original Planet of the Apes, starring Charlton Heston. It ended with the survivors finding the top of the Statue of Liberty sticking up out of the sand? I think the Senate Building featured in one of the sequels.

I am pretty sure this is what I was looking for, downloading as we speak.

(What a weird format of a poster anyway, this)

Ole, if you mind, since I have you here!

One more, please?

This futuristic western'ish film. There's this cowboy robot chasing the hero. There was a big fuss about the actor being able to fire a pistol without blinking. I think it was supposed to be an amusement park or something.

You know what it is?

I think you mean 'Westworld' - starring Yul Brenner and James Brolin, directed by Michael Crichton.

Its not post-apocalyptic though - its set in the distant future in an amusement park called Delos (which is made up of three zones called WesternWorld, RomanWorld and MedievalWorld). The park consists of androids that are supposed to act in character. The guests can indulge in any fantasy they wish - killing the androids or seeking sexual favours from them. Yul Brenners characters is an Android-cowboy-Gunslinger who goes cuckoo and begins to huntdown and kill all the guests in the park. The movie is a certified cult-classic.

Logans Run...cool movie. Let's to carousel.

Also, the orginal Planet of the Apes they find the statue of liberty.

Can recommend one called Miracle Mile, made back in 1988 (when the threat of nuclear war was very fecking real!).

Another is the BBC drama, Threads...still chilling today as it was back in the 80s.

Can also recommend an excellent book called Apocalypse Movies, written by Kim Newman...crops up now and then on Ebay and Amazon, but still in print as far as I know, so can be ordered.

Testament (1983) was beautiful in a very horrific way. Several scenes were very hard to watch because of the emotions involved.
I was shocked to see Kevin Costner in there... almost didn't recognize him.

I think post-apocalyptic films are probably my favourite genre. Threads is a great film, it's probably in my all time top ten just because of it's out-and-out bleakness. It's the best film of it's type. Certainly better than "The Day After" (which does have it's moments but is rather melodramatic).

Miracle Mile is pretty good - recently got it off ebay because I don't think it has been released in the UK on DVD yet. Has the feel of a typical American 80's romantic drama at times though, in a weird way.

Kim Newman's book sounds interesting Hammer - I think I'll check it out.

EDIT - If anyone wants to check out "Threads", the whole 108 mins of it is on Google Video:

I remember one film where there is a guy who thinks he is the last alive until he inevitably meets a woman. They raid shops and hunt round for other humans. They eventually find a black guy who's smashing up shops on his own with a bulldozer or something. Then the main guys bird goes off with the black guy. Can't rmember the reason why they didn't die but everyone else did - but they eventually work it out and I think they manage to resolve the whole situation somehow.

Does anyone know what this film is?

I think that might be "The Quiet Earth"

The exact one - cheers mate. Saw it a long time ago and it sticks in my mind for some reason, but reading the review it doesn't look as good as I remember it

Yeah - same here. It was on TV about 15+ years ago. Haven't seen it since. Seems to have stuck in my mind for some reason, though.
