Martha- Tom Waits

Operator, number, please:
Its been so many years
Will she remember my old voice
While I fight the tears?
Hello, hello there, is this martha?
This is old tom frost,
And I am calling long distance,
Dont worry bout the cost.
cause its been forty years or more,
Now martha please recall,
Meet me out for coffee,
Where well talk about it all.

And those were the days of roses,
Poetry and prose and martha
All I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
Wed packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I feel so much older now,
And youre much older too,
Hows your husband?
And hows the kids?
You know that I got married too?
Lucky that you found someone
To make you feel secure,
cause we were all so young and foolish,
Now we are mature.

And those were the days of roses,
Poetry and prose and martha
All I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
Wed packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I was always so impulsive,
I guess that I still am,
And all that really mattered then
Was that I was a man.
I guess that our being together
Was never meant to be.
And martha, martha,
I love you cant you see?

And those were the days of roses,
Poetry and prose and martha
All I had was you and all you had was me.
There was no tomorrows,
Wed packed away our sorrows
And we saved them for a rainy day.

And I remember quiet evenings
Trembling close to you...

Nine Inch Nails - "We're In This Together"

I've become impossible
holding on to when
when everything seemed to matter more
the two of us
all used and beaten up
watching fate as it flow down the path we
have chose

you and me
we're in this together now
none of them can stop us now
we will make it through somehow
you and me
if the world should break in two
until the very end of me
until the very end of you

awake to the sound as they peel apart the skin
they pick and they pull
trying to get their fingers in
well they've got to kill what we've found
well they've got to hate what we fear
well they've got to make it go away
well they've got to make it disappear

the farther I fall I'm beside you
as lost as I get I will find you
the deeper the wound I'm inside you
for ever and ever I'm a part of

you and me
we're in this together now
none of them can stop us now
we will make it through somehow
you and me
if the world should break in two
until the very end of me
until the very end of you

all that we were is gone we have to hold on
all that we were is gone we have to hold on
when all our hope is gone we have to hold on
all that we were is gone but we can hold on

you and me
we're in this together now
none of them can stop us now
we will make it through somehow
you and me
even after everything
you're the queen and I'm the king
nothing else means anything

BE MY FRIEND - FREE

All I need is a friend
some one to give a helpin' hand
when I'm afraid in the night
someone to squeeze me
and tell me it's alright
you know I worry such a lot
and I would give all I've got
just to do have someone believe in me
just to do that and put me
back on evenly.
Baby, baby, be my friend
Baby, baby, be my friend
Baby, baby, be my friend
I will love you till the end.
You make me feel
a stronger love than anyone
I've ever know
Oh, I need someone like you
you give me something so strong and true
Oh, Baby, baby, be my friend
Baby, baby, be my friend
Baby, baby, be my friend
I will love you till the end.
Want you Baby, baby, baby be my friend
I will love you I will love you till the very end
baby, baby, baby, baby be my friend
I will love you
I will love you till the very end.
Baby baby be my friend
I will love you till the very end

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
and it makes me wonder
really makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

***

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, Ooh, it makes me wonder

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can't you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

***

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all is one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying the stairway to heaven

I have to post Beautiful William by The Handsome Family. It's not on YouTube, but it doesn't need music. It's a genuinely brilliant short story in verse. I'm not sure yet, but I think there's a real chance Rennie Sparks is one of the greatest lyricists around today.

Beautiful William,
one morning in May,
in a milk-white convertible
drove slowly away.

Beautiful William
with curling black hair,
gold rings on his fingers
as he held to the wheel.

Was he given a package
by a man on the train?
We found his car by the roadside
later that day.

Mirrored sunglasses,
roses and wine
laid on the empty seat
as he slowly drove by.

He left his lights burning,
he left his perfect lawn,
his automatic sprinklers
about to switch on.

Did he find a black glove
on the cliffs by the bay?
Why would he leave us,
why would he leave us this way?

He drove through the town
with a smile on his face,
waving to everyone
as he went on his way.

Polly from Red River,
Rose from Green Falls,
they drove to his house
and they lay on the lawn.

Was he stopped in the airport
by a man with a cane?
We found his car by the roadside
later that day.

Rose smashed his windows
till the glass was all gone.
Polly broke the back door
and she screamed down the hall.

No answer sounded
but wind flying through
as we tore up the green lawn
and torched all the rooms.

Did he find a white glove
in the pines by the lake?
Why would he leave us,
why would he leave us this way?

One of my favorite Springsteen songs, and shit there are alot.

Jungleland

The rangers had a homecoming in harlem late last night
And the magic rat drove his sleek machine over the jersey state line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The rat pulls into town rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance and disappear down flamingo lane

Well the maximum lawman run down flamingo chasing the rat and the barefoot
Girl
And the kids round here look just like shadows always quiet, holding hands
From the churches to the jails tonight all is silence in the world
As we take our stand down in jungleland

The midnight gangs assembled and picked a rendezvous for the night
Theyll meet `neath that giant exxon sign that brings this fair city light
Man theres an opera out on the turnpike
Theres a ballet being fought out in the alley
Until the local cops, cherry tops, rips this holy night
The streets alive as secret debts are paid
Contacts made, they vanished unseen
Kids flash guitars just like switch-blades hustling for the record machine
The hungry and the hunted explode into rocknroll bands
That face off against each other out in the street down in jungleland

In the parking lot the visionaries dress in the latest rage
Inside the backstreet girls are dancing to the records that the d.j. plays
Lonely-hearted lovers struggle in dark corners
Desperate as the night moves on, just a look and a whisper, and theyre gone

Beneath the city two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender in a bedroom locked
In whispers of soft refusal and then surrender in the tunnels uptown
The rats own dream guns him down as shots echo down them hallways in the
Night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light

Outside the streets on fire in a real death waltz
Between flesh and whats fantasy and the poets down here
Dont write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of the night they reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand but they wind up wounded, not even dead
Tonight in jungleland
