Possible reasons why SAF wants Worthless Cup this season

1. Many First team players have been injured, SAF know he still has the likes of Keane, Becks, Rio, Butt, Blanc still waiting to play regularly. Because half the first team weren't tired out early in the season, SAF will now have fresh crop of players for selection in the latter half of the season. some first team players will have only played maybe 40 games this season even if we go on to win all 4 trophies - compared to 70 games had they been playing regularly since August.

2. To gain the confidence of RVN, Blanc, Veron, and Forlan. These players have not win a single trophy for United, and the first Silverware will improve confidence going into the final corner of the domestic title, FA Cup, and CL Cup.

Anything else to justify SAF push for the Cup?

Interesting how Sir Alex has decided not to use the Worthless Cup as a stepping stone for the young kids at the club, certainly has gone against his youth policy in the competition from the past.

Agree with reason 1, RUnited as to his reason for putting out strong squads in the three matches to date in the competition. But also, it has been ideal to use Diego Forlan in the competition to give the lad a bit of extra confidence, not with the silverware, but with his own game. Scored the 1 on 1 with the keeper against Burnley away which set him up for his run.

Also, just a thought here, maybe he felt that he wanted to get his big name players back to the basics in football and that they are not above playing in this competition.

This is to measure Man Utd never end this season with empty hands.Worthless must be held this season and then it will increase the skills and performance to the young player(especially Forlan)! <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" />

Weve been playing "strong teams" in the worthless this season as were down to the bare bones as it is.
You cant just throw in a team of 11 teenagers against the likes of Burnley, theyd get destroyed and a bad result could damage their careers.
Weve had a fairly settled team all season, mainly because weve had no other choice.

Maybe there just arent enough good youngsters comin through?

Lets face it! Chadwick will never be first team and Danny Pugh doesnt look up to much! Have seen some of the youth reports in the forum but I am thinking that all of the ones I've seen are very small, thin and light weight!

but we were already back in 2nd place before the Chelsea game.. what would justify the need to still play for the win?

i don't even think SAF ever doubted our chances of making atleast the top 4 in the league to go to the CL. he was always very confident about our chances.

that also doesn't justify the need to go all out in the Worthless Cup IMO. those thin light weights you're talkin about were what Butt, Becks, Gaz, Phil were less than 10 years ago.. they need games if they're going to develop.

SAF is a master psychologist. He has an uncanny knack of knowing the right thing to do.

The Worthington Cup has provided us the stage to fine tune some players. And I think that the injuries to our big stars is a blessing in disguise, surely. Because it asked for a depleted team to outperform itself. The Worthington Cup gave us some extra games to rev up our engine. It kept us on our toes, including someone like Diego Forlan, who is really settled in, I should say by now. SAF understood the need for this. And he has not failed in realizing that taking a 'worthless' competition at heart as he has can infuse dynamism and hunger in our players.

The man's a genius. Sometimes admittedly unknowingly. But, who said that all inventions were actually thought out? More than half of them were discovered by accident, weren't they? And SAF has the uncanny knack to do exactly that. Let's clone him as a replacement. ;)

I think in the past the reserve team we had was full of players who could get a first team place in nearly any premiership side they just needed the experience and Alex thought we had a chance of winning the games with this side, at the moment though the reserve team is not strong enough to take on chelsea first team.

Remember a worthless cup team of the past included Ole,Scholes,Butt,Van de Gouw,Curtis,Berg,Higgenbottom,Fortune,

to teach the first team players a lesson i think.
to bring them back down to earth. i think some had got into the mindset that the worthington cup & the FA cup were beneath them.
At the end of the day its still silverware, not prestigious and if it'll bring confidence to some of the lads, all the better.

I think in the ealier time of this season, we are not playing very well as a team and it's right for Fergie to put up a strong team for the worthless in order to gel the team and raise the form of the players by match practice. Now we are already in semi so we should go on to win it.

don't let the scousers hear your comments! we've been looking down on them for years for thinking this is an important silverware to win.. remember the "Mini Trebel" season???

i better shut this topic down before the scousers find it! <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

i agree.

its for the cash, full houses every night, about £1mill in the till, i know they pay a % to the other team, but still.....

I agree, this way when Keane, Becks, Rio, etc are hitting stride for the last part of the season they won't require games off to rest.

um....4 trophies, now lets see the critics talk ;) <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

The tosspot at work keeps goading me by saying"come may united will be left without so much as a pot to p*ss in"
If we have the worthless cup at least the lads will be ok if they are caught short ;) <img src="graemlins/santa.gif" border="0" alt="[Santa]" />

I think theres a few reasons,

* SAF was afraid of going empty handed for another season and saw the Worthnothing cup as his best shot at a trophy.

* There was so many injuries he had no choice but to play the players he did.

* He aiming for all the silverware he can to load up the OT trophy cabinet before he retires!

<img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" /> <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

He hasn't won it in a long time, could just be he wants the trophy back in the cabinet. Besides, silverware is silverware. And if we reach the final and so do Liverpoo, can anyone say they WOULDN'T want to win it then? ;)

Can you imagine what would happen if we just won the Worthy? It's as bad as not winning anything. The Champions League is what we have to win. Nothing else would be good enough.

He has always played a team he thought would win the match. And the teams we used v. Leicester and Burnley weren't exactly the best possible. A few of the first team players needed the match after coming back from an injury. And we have also had reserve team players injured and using a junior side would have been a terrible idea IMO.

And suddenly we were facing Chelsea at Old Trafford. Sure, it's a worthless cup but a match versus a very good Chelsea side was never going to be worthless. Winning against Chelsea means our confidence will be even better.

Remember also that we usually lose in this cup against a Premiership side. So us beating Leicester and Burnley was no surprise.

So I don't think us being in the semis and playing our best team was Fergie's intention from the beginning. It just kind of happened.

i agree that it's more confident related and nothing to do with wanting to the trophy.. we've lost a lot of games and winning these games will pull up confidence.
