Whether or not you people take opinion seriously is another matter but i have to get this off my chest.
First off all 35million for Rio is he worth this?Personally i think if you take his age etc into consideration then yes but when you think that Newcastle bought Bramble for 5million it makes me think. Second off all IF the Rio deal goes through surely no more purchases will go through, now this to me sucks because we have lost wallwork,Johensen,Irwin etc and with the Rio signing we will only have one replacement for 3 players. Rio,silvestre(i hate him)gaz,larry,O'shea,Brown,P.neville.

Could we not have bought someone like Ayala who yes is alot older granted but it undoubtably a solid defender who has lots of experience. And then bought maybe Duff, and Maccarone? To me this would give the squad more options. For example young Duff could play on the wing with Giggsy up front with Van the Man. To me 3 signings are better than 1 .

SQUAD

Barthez
Carrol

Brown
Blanc
G.Neville
P.Neville
O'shea
Ayala
Silvestre

Giggs
Duff
Beckham
Veron
Scholes
Keanne
Butt
Chadwick

Macarone
Solskjaer
Van Nistelrooy
Forlan

York in deal with duff

COMMENTS PLEASE.

why do people persist with the thinking that giggsy can play up front with RVN?? keep him out on the freaking wing where he belongs. duf would be a far batter option "in the hole" then giggs.

Yes keep Giggsy on the left and Scholesy centre Mid.
We shouldn't pay £35 million for Ferdinand on what he has achieved, at times last season he looked dodgy: Undoubtedly he is a class player but massively overpriced. We need a striker, 2 defenders and wide cover IMO.

<strong>COMMENTS PLEASE.</strong><hr></blockquote>Why is it that when some other wannabe (Barcodes, Boro') buys a player, all and sundry say "why didn't we go for him?", or words to that effect.

United have the financial clout to go for the player who Fergie thinks is the best man for each position. Atm, there aren't many clubs in the world that can compete with us in the transfer market so basically, if Fergie and the PLC want someone, they're almost assured of getting him.

Just because Rio is gonna cost a bomb, doesn't mean the kitty is empty, PK basically said yesterday that money is available for Fergie to go get who he wants.
<a href="http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/020715/80/d3dzs.html" target="_blank">"We are cash-rich and work on a well-resourced basis."</a><hr></blockquote>If they want Duff, and the price is not ridiculous, expect him to be wearing the #9 next week.

All this moaning about how much a player costs by everyone here boggles my mind. It's not your money.

In a lot of ways it IS our money, but I remember fans screaming for years things like 'we're putting money into this club and we want to see it spent on strengthning the squad'.

Now that it happens, with the judgement of Sir Alex as well, people are still not happy.

Fergie knows ONE player won't be enough, so you can be sure he won't blow it all on one deal.

I really want to know where this 35m quid comes from? Media obviously! If you slapped a 25m cash payment in front of Risdale he would snap your hand off.

We might well know in the next few days...

If I was a season ticket holder who was asked to pay more every year then maybe I'd have concerns over how much was spent but tbh, a lot of the cash in the coffers comes from global merchandising so it shouldn't affect the match goer.

It just makes me laugh when I see all these shopping lists all over the place saying we can get so and so for £xxm and wotsizname for £xxm then sell whojamacallit for £xxm and use that money to buy blahbuddyblah from thingymajig for £xxm!!! <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" /> <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

Rant over.

Some posters on here are far too impatient for that! Tomorrow! Tomorrow! ;)

TTR, I don't think that any United fan would really complain about the levels of money spent if we play entertaining football. Which is something we have always had under SAF, and long may it continue. <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Another factor that may influence how many players Fergie brings in is wages.

We've seen the normally well controlled wage structure blown away over the last 2-3 years by Keane, Veron & Becks contracts. Therefore SAF may have been told to trim the squad by one or two to bring the total wage bill down a bit? ;)

A fact which is too easily forgotten by plenty of folks. Sir Alex has repeatedly stated that he is going for players (as in more than one). Don't expect Rio to be the only signing.

Agreed, United has lost its crown, the CL final is coming to OT- don't expect any half measures.

I'd be surprised if Rio is our last move (assuming of course that he chooses to come to OT). I still think we're going to be in for a replacement for Irwin and possibly a move for Duff, or else a striker in the 5-10m range. Personally, I'd be ecstatic if we got Duff, and put off a move for a striker, at which point we could pick up Cisse next year.

An excellent point, which is seldom raised. Unlike the Real's, Chelsea's, Lazio's and Leeds' of this world, United have gone about it the right way. The success has been built through steady patient progress whilst the marketing has pushed the United image worldwide to the point of making us universally loathed at home.

As a result United can now aford to spend their rewards in bolstering the squad and if necessary outbidding all others to make our team unbeatable. We have not gone down the route of hocking the clubs future by borrowing against imagined success a la Leeds or Chelsea, we are not borderline bankrupt like Inter or Lazio and we don't need or want a government hand out every few years to balance the books a la Real. We've got LOADSAMONEY :D

I have always been similarly cautious over the clubs purchases and have admired the shrewd deals Fergie has made for some amazing talents (Schmeichel, Solskjaer, Kanchelskis and of course Cantona), I still believe 35 million for Rio is silly money. However if the club have the money then would you rather it were spent buying Peter Kenyon another ivory back scratcher ;) or would you rather see it paraded on the field?

I know we had grown used to Martin Edwards and his stash of ivory back scratchers but it appears that Peter Kenyon may be willing to put up with the itch until he is patted on the back for giving the fans what they have always asked for.

Agreed, its silly money but we have a need that has to be sorted this year.

The move for Rio has a lot to do with the fact that he has played in the league and knows what's requires, so he does not require a one season settling in period....
secondly he is being bought with a long term goal i.e. as a partner for Wes and O'shea. (this equates to saving money longterm).

Imagine spending 15 million each on Ayala and Thuram, both who will want wages in excess of 50 to 60 000/week, if not more. If it doesnt work out...???
Sure Rio comes with the same risk but a smaller risk IMO.

Rio won't cost United 35 mill. Someone else said there that 25 might be a enough and, you know, it might. The way things stand now, if Rio says he wants to move to United then United have all the bargaining power. Leeds can't keep a player on their books who has publically stated he wants to play for us, so they'll take whatever their given and like it! We have the position of power here, the cash rich club buying from the poor sheep. Expect more signings too!!!

Don't be stupid... York can't afford Duff ;)

Speaking of Yorke, I'm hoping the Rio deal has the same conclusion. Remember Gregory's "If I had a gun I'd have shot him" quote. Manager's are obliged to try and keep their best but once a player wants to go there arn't many (managers) who would want to keep an unhappy player.

Who gives a toss how unhappy Leeds are about it
