I've just bought my PS3 and im having trouble connecting to PSN.

Im on Tiscali Broadband and im using a ethernet cable, i've followed the instructions from the Playstation manuel about setting up the wired connection but it cant find an Ip Address when I test my connection.

When I click on the 'Sign up for Playstation network' it says 'A connection to the network could not be established - go back to the network setting.

When setting up the connection; I dont understand what to put after clicking easy on the address settings. Do you have put in a manuel Ip address? And i dont really understand what the DHCP host name is, or the DNS setting.

Im a doing something wrong, or is Tiscali not very good when its come to using PSN?

Have you selected the 'Automatic' option which should do the settings for you?

Have you selected the 'Automatic' option which should do the settings for you?

This is how I do it...

Connection Method - Wired

Address settings - Easy

IP Address setting - Automatic

The rest I dont understand so I put...

DHCP - Do not set

DNS Setting - Automatic

MTU -Automatic

Proxy Server - Do not use

UPnp - Enable

And then save the settings and test the connection.

It then tries to obtain an IP address but all I get is 'The attempt to obtain an IP address timed out'

Any idea Hectic?

Do you have a Username and Password or anything like that with your internet?

I've been reading about it for you, and many people can't connect at the moment, I just logged on though so I'm not sure why it's not working.

Also, are you getting any error codes or is it just the message at the bottom of the screen?

Ah, I just read the error message properly.

'The attempt to obtain an IP address timed out'

I think the best bet would be to manually enter your IP Address and that should sort out the problem.

Is there anything you have to do on the computer ie: Setting up a shared connection?

Also I've just looked at the manuel IP address and you need to find out the Subnet Mask, Primary DNS and Secondary DNS codes.

Where do you find them Hectic?

No you won't need to set up a shared connection or anything, that shouldn't be needed.

Basically, just can find that by doing this:

Go into:

'Start'
'Run'
'Type 'cmd'

In the opened box type:

'Ipconfig /all'

There you will see all the details you need to do the manual option. Make sure you do this on the computer that is directly connected to the internet, or in other words your main computer.

Tell me if this works.

fecking hell this is frustrating!

I've put in all the correct codes in but the only way I can go further on is by going back then my IP Address changes back to Automatic.

That is very strange.

The only thing I can suggest is ringing up Customer Support and have them walk you through it.

Tiscali... no wonder you can't get on.

I had them. Bunch of wankers they are, charged me for 2 months extra after I transferred to sky... with tiscali you can't download anything after 6pm till 11pm. Ridiculous.

I had no problems setting up my PS3 with sky... If you have sky digital you can get 16meg for £10 a month.

I looked at it again Hectic and it seems I have to put a code in the 'Default Router' for it to go onto the next page.

Do you where to find that code?

I've picked up a (very slight) understanding of some of the network fixes through trying to get my PS3 online.

Isn't the "Default Router" code just the IP address of your router? If so then it would depend on the make of your router - I had a Belkin router that was 192.168.2.1 and a Sitecome router that was 192.168.0.1

Once you identify the make and model of your router, then go to the manufacturer's website and look in the support area - they will usually have the manual / setup instructions for the router there. This should tell you what the IP address of your router is (it will usually be where it explains how to alter the settings of your router).

To access the setup pages of these routers, you type this IP address into the address window of your internet browser.

Maybe it would help giving your PS3 a staic IP, that is telling the router which address the PS3 will be using? You would also need to give your PC a set address too (my PS3 IP address is 192.168.0.3 and my PC is 192.168.0.4, for example). This can be done via the router settings setup pages which you access as outline above.

Can you post a pic of your network setting page from your PS3? I think mine are:
PS3 IP address: 192.168.0.3
Router IP: 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.0.1
Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask...: 255.255.255.0
(sorry - couldn't remember the exact words but will check tonight if you need).

So since I am using a Sitecom router, I know that it has an IP address of 192.168.0.1.

The Primary DNS is basically the path you want the PS3 to take to access the internet. Therefore you want this to be the IP address of your router.

You don't have to have any numbers in the secondary DNS line.

The subnet mask is that number beacuse...I have no idea! From looking at various forums that is the number that most people seem to have.

I hope this helps. You can also have a look at this forum:

They're really good when it comes to tech help.

Let me know if this works!

XBOX 360...............

XBOX 360...............

So would that be the 360 core...the 360 premium...or the 360 elite?
Or are Microsoft looking to release yet another version of their console to compete with the PS3?
Personally I really enjoy the PS3 - even though the games need to catch up to the potential of the system. I would rather be in this position than the 360, where it is felt the games are already stretching the potential of the system.

I think you'll be waiting for ages for the good games to come along then. PS3 development sounds like a much more arduous road to take than the Xbox, its fancy architecture and the difficulty of Cell programming being the primary reasons.

I think that's a fair shout, although I think you could replace arduous with different.

Once developers get their heads around programming the cell, then I think there will be greater differences between games for the 360 and the PS3.

However, one issue with this is that it seems games are costing more and more to produce, which is the main reason for the number of exclusive games dropping - companies are investing so much in the development that they need to release it on as many platforms as possible to generate maximum revenue.

I suppose I'm a bit biased because I have owned a ps1 and ps2, so for me PS3 was the way to go.

To be fair I may have exaggerated the difficulties of PS3 development a little bit compared to the Xbox. Both rely on multiprocessor architectures, the main difference being the Xbox has three and the PS3 has six. Silly me. :)

Where I live though, PS3 games generally cost a bit more than Xbox games (around $50 USD vs $36 USD), and that's no coincidence in my opinion. What is also no coincidence is the fact that plenty of developers have spoken about the challenges of fulling harnessing the Cell's capabilities, and that takes up valuable development time.

Eventually developers will have their own special methods/algorithms specifically for the Cell, no doubt, but that's one or two years down the line. In the meantime, releases will be comparatively scarce when you look at the opposition, that is, a more mature Xbox and a relatively simpler Wii. The greater differences you speak of in PS3 and Xbox games won't materialize for quite some time yet. Meanwhile, the Wii is sucking up casual gamers, but that's an entirely different matter altogether.

I agree with you about the lack of exclusives, though, and that's a general problem (or symptom) in the industry. Gamers want more now, and companies have to deliver. To do that, they'd have to come up with more new features, better graphics/sound/gameplay, and more realism. It's no wonder they're trying to recoup their costs by spreading out their bets on different platforms.

Personally I'm a Wii60 guy, though I've cooled off both platforms because of school/work. I'd be picking up a PS3 when the time's right. :D Not too soon though, mind.
