Do these cnuts exist anymore? Both myself and a friend want to buy a PS3 but we cannot find the 60GB version anywhere. The 40GB seems pointless when a much better version is in existence, but were they limited edition or something?

40GB versions are everywhere but we cannot for the life of us find one of these. Only ones we can find are second-hand ones that are going for £700-£800.

60GB system is just much better, or so I've been led to believe. It's not just got the 20GB extra space, but it's got loads more features on it, no?

I suspect Weaste'll be able to correct me if I'm wrong there, but I am pretty sure it's just a better machine.

It has: the PS2 graphics chip (they still cannot work out how to emulate this in software, even being the company that knows exactly how it works down to the last transistor), 4 USB ports instead of 2, the card reader slots, and the older chips which are bigger, make more heat and use more power. It also has a better Blu-ray drive that can handle Super Audio CDs.

That's about it.

Wait to see if the US 80GB (same as the old European 60GB) version is going to be introduced in Europe. It might be.... it might be not.

The best PS3s made in terms of features were the original 60GB North American models.

Aye I have been looking for a 60gb one as well as I want the backwards compatibility. If I were to buy a jap import one how would that affect me? It would still play UK games, no?

Games aren't region locked so yes you would, but you wouldn't be able to watch films. Why not buy the 40GB and keep your PS2?

Don't have a ps2, gave it to my little brother last year. Not sure how fussed I am about the dvd player in it to be honest so thanks for the feedback

Gamestop/Gamestation generally have a stock of second hand 60GB PS3's. A lot of the time it will be unopened, or just opened for a look, and you'll have a brand new pS3 for much less than full price. You can ask them to show you the PS3 they are trying to sell you, and pick the newest one/one in best condition. I got mine for €279, brand new, everything except the power cable was still sealed in the original wrappings.

BTW I've decided to get one of these here machines of endless enjoyment.

PS3 + Controller + Fifa 08 + Uncharted + (hopefully Skate)

And then my parents are gonna give me the money to get GTA IV for my birthday.

Then Metal Gear Solid shall follow.

Need to remember that the 40GB model was introduced to get the cost down, and it was expected that the 80GB North American model would be discontinued once stocks ran out. However, we now know that North America will be getting a new 80GB MGS4 pack, meaning that they are still producing that model. IMO, we are soon going to get a higher end model for Europe with the release of PlayTV, as 40GB is not really sufficient for a digital video recorder. With this in mind, a larger hard disk model must be coming along. Whether it will include the Graphics Sythesizer,4 USB, and card readers again and maybe even have the PlayTV tuners built into the main unit is anyones guess.

What I would like to see is a high end unit in a Hi-Fi seperate case will all of this in the one box along with a proper disk drawer, 250+ GB HDD, a satellite/cable coax input, two HDMI ports, and some form of expansion draw for a skycard etc. reader, hopefully with some USB sockets on the back. I'd gladly pay 500 quid for such a device.

Quick question, my 60gb ps3 has died under warranty, the retailer, Amazon no longer stocks the 60gb model. where exactly do i stand for a replacement? Do I get the 40gb model? If so reckon there's any chance i could con them into giving me a voucher or something to make up the value?

There isn't a 60GB or a 40GB 360.

yep i'm talking shite. i was typing on a break from playing on my 360 there. i mean ps3 and have edited as such.

If it is still under warranty just ring Sony and they should replace it. If they don't have any 60GB models left they will probably throw in a few games to make up the value.

how much for that?
i'm looking to buy a ps3 40gb - looking for the best deal at the moment

Well I want the 60GB one for the backwards compatability and SACD reader.

A friend of mine got his at 60GB and it's awesome, but I'll do as you say Weaste and wait and see if the 80GB version comes out. To be honest, we're not getting our huge HDTV here in the house until the summer anyway, so I may as well wait until then.

A few games? SCEE should quite easily be able to source a model for him if they wanted to be correct about this. The same model in the US (80GB) is still being produced, and it is sold for $100 more there than the 40GB. The lack of a BC console in Europe comes from SCEE anality - I would like to know how they deal with this. It's one thing to put "specifications may change without prior notice" in the manual, to not resupplying you with the exact same product they took your hard earned cash for when it fails under warranty. I don't know what the legal situation would be here, but SCEE could get themseleves into a total mess over things like this. I suspect however that they would actually repair such a unit rather than supply a new or reconditioned lower end model. If they don't, they should give you all of your money back.

I thought the 80GB had a software emulator for the PS2? and it was rumoured that it was possible the 40gb could play PS2 games with a patch if Sony wished.

The 80GB NA/JAP and European 60GB models have the PS2 graphics chip (Graphics Sythesizer) on the motherboard, the CPU (Emotion Engine) is emulated in software. This is different to the original 20GB and 60GB North American which basically have entire PS2s on the motherboard. Ken Kuturagi's original idea was to do everything through software emulation. It obviously wasn't ready for the North American and Japanese launch, so they unfortunately had to go with the full hardware model. Later, these were phased out, and replaced with a half and half solution that still only reached 80% compatibility. Maybe they are still working on a software only solution, maybe they have dumped it. I said months ago that it was quite obvious that a generic GS emulator on the Cell was impossible, and I still think that it is.

Played the demo, didn't really do anything for me. Like Tomb Raider, you'l like this. Graphically it is stunning.

It's nothing like Tomb Raider. The game is a masterpiece IMO, highly replayable, and it's not too short if you collect all the treasures and gain all of the medals and unlockables on crushing difficulty. When the decendents start popping up around level 19 or so, it gets insane in places.

You can get a free ps3 with a £30 a month orange contract phone according to the advert that keeps popping up at the bottom of my screen.

What are the conditions, that you have to stay with Orange for 4 years while they gradually increase the monthy payment to 60 quid after 2 years?

No idea, I've not bothered looking into it there is always a catch with these. Although the only one I have managed to see is that you generally have to pay for the phone. The contracts are only 12-18months. Am I the only one that has the ad? Have a look if you want.

Interesting, but that is one huge phone. ;)

fecks sake, I was just around a friend's house whilst he played Fifa '08 and Resistance and now I want one more than ever. Especially when I see adverts for MGS4, GT5 and GTAIV.

I can't wait, just those three games alone are going to eat up several hours of my life...possibly half of what is left of the year.

Stobzilla's PS3 UPDATE !

PS3 40 GB + Extra Six Axis Controller + Fifa 08 + Skate for £299.99

+ GTA IV when it comes out as well.

Happy 21st for me come April 15th

There is no catch to the Orange contract with a free PS3 btw. It's how i got my PS3. It's just marketing, they still make loads off the contract because of the length of it. The customer service is actually pretty good, and i actually had a phone call off some bloke from Orange last month making sure that i was happy with the service

Off topic question does anyone know if you can play american game on a english ps3. I just bought a ps3 and I want to buy a game but they only sell it in America.
