Playstation 3 160GB and 320GB Consoles announced

I am hoping the 120Gb atleast will drop to around £150 now that its being discontinued but who knows what Sony will do...Weaste?

OK, so say I'm looking at getting a Playstation, which is the best one to go for? I don't want a slim and I'm willing to replace the HDD.

Why don't you want the slim, isn't it better in terms of reliability?

If you're going to put in your own hard drive, then pick up the 40gb or 80gb fat version, ideally you'd want the 60 gb version but those are hard to get a hold of, for a decent price.

If you manage to get the 60 gb one for around £250, it'd be a very good deal. My mate paid over £500 for his, the spazzer, he was desperate for the backward compatibility

Surely it'd have just been cheaper to buy a slim and get a ps2 second hand?

When is PS4 tenatively scheduled to be released?

I like the look of that middle one as I'm really looking for one in mint condition. Cheers Olly.

Ok, so besides backwards compatibility, what does the 120GB phat version not have that, that 60GB version have?

The 120gb is a slim, not a phat.

The 60gb has 4 USB ports, and the rest have 2. It also has memory card slots too, where the rest don't.

There was a fat 120GB at one point though but I don't think it lasted too long.

The price of an HDD is peanuts, you can swap that out and stick in a 1TB drive if you wanted. What you get with an old 60GB model is PS2 compatibility, and for some people, that's gold!

Precisely. I assume it's relatively easy replacing the HDD?

My 80gb has the same. They're great for photos and music transfer and the backwards compatibility is a great feature.

I'm not in the least bit interested in how it looks, I need (want) more storage space, and if I get myself a 320GB slim I can leave my 40GB one at the missus' place for bluray.

If I recall correctly, Dr. Dwayne's machine only has partial backwards compatibility, half of it is done through software emulation. The only machines that actually have the full PS2 hardware inside them are the NA/Japan original 20GB and 60GB models. The Emotion Engine was first removed from all other models, and finally the Graphics Synthesizer from everything after that. A North American 80GB is basically the PAL 60GB with a slightly larger HDD.
