Players with something to prove?

I know we are linked with loads of players but IMO, not convinced some of them would be coming with the right motivation. Many of theses players want to slot into an already established winning formula. I really think some are worried about the weight of expectation signing for us at the moment.

I think we need to sign players that want to come here because of the challenge and not only cause we were prepared to double their money.

Players nowadays don't think that simple. There are a lot of factors involved considering move to another club. Such as money, challenges, cities, team mates, managers or even weather and cultures. So to say that we need players to come just because of challenges are rare to happen.

We need to get off the high horse. We're just another top club who isn't renowned for overspending and whose lingering at 7 place. This 'players need to want to come to United at all cost' BS needs to stop unless we want to sign players from Stoke or Aston Villa.

Well we did sign Ashley Young, maybe we can check the availability of Charlie Adam.

After the last season, there are players already at the club with something to prove and maybe they will be given time to do it under LVG. Fellaini, Kagawa, Cleverley, Young, Nani to name a few are players that need to impress and understand the way LVG wants us to play. Where players such as Nani have shown in the past what they can do for United, the time is now for them to step up otherwise they will be gone. I doubt LVG is going to mess about.
I have a lot more confidence in LVG getting the players motivated and playing at their best than I did with Moyes at the club. They will have zero excuses whereas the season just gone, the managers lack of silverware left the players with exuses a plenty.

This!

The arrogance of some fans is unreal..."Ugh, why why trying to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger? He's too old and injury prone" etc etc etc

Right now, for a club of OUR standards, we are rock bottom...We need to sign anyone to get the momentum back!
Gone are the days, for now, where we sign an 18 year old Portuguese and take the time to turn him into a world beater.

We need at least CL football this year....Or else, I dread to think what will happen

I wouldn't say that, we are trying to sign Shaw and we signed Januzaj at 16 and are (hopefully) in the process of turning him into a world beater.

Doing so would drastically limit the amount of attainable targets to pursue unfortunately. We might have been in a better position to take that approach to signing players if we qualified for the Champions League, but alas, we did not.

Many of the clubs simply have a far greater pulling power over us, whether it be for a multiple of reasons or just a few. We are a massive club, so in that respect we still maintain a certain amount of allure for prospective players (van Persie for instance), but what will be our biggest advantage, or indeed weakness, if what we can offer to player and what we are willing to offer. The large majority of players in the modern game are persuaded by earning more at this club or there, or joining a club in a favourable state.

Still, I think your logic might apply to some of the players van Gaal has previously managed with Schweinsteiger at Bayern for instance. Guardiola seemingly doesn't favour the German, so that transfer could feasibly happen. That probably applies to some in the Dutch national team also. It is however, tapping into a specific market and isn't going to correspond to all countries and players, despite the managers pedigree.

I'm far from naive that there are many other factors to signing players but the first and foremost is the player should want to play for the club, and not just cause were offering him the most money. If you sign for a big club, all the other stuff like challenges and team mates will likely to be there anyway.

Often its the wife or girlfriend thats more interested in the other stuff. Often, Players are happy at clubs, and I've been told its like going to your day job or place of work, its the wife, girlfriend or family that feel isolated. They can get very home sick and but pressure on players to return. The city thing is crap in my opinion as lots of players live miles away from the city clubs they play for anyway. Equally, many don't want the profile that comes with being in London....It can get quite scary and leave you and yours exposed to all sorts. Also if your a single lad, big cities can be the loneliest of places.

Half of those issues are excuses by high profile players at times cause they don't want to be seen going just for the money.

I'm not talking about how much we pay them, I'm talking about signing players that have nothing to prove in their careers.

Schweinsteiger great player, better than what we've got but not sure why he'd come to England now in his career? Its not the Utd way, and we've proved successfully that buying young ambitious players, who you get a different type of commitment from. The irony is Schweinsteiger would be coming from a club with the same principles. Shit season last year but lets not lose ours because of it...

At least that way we wouldn't have to worry about his reckless tackling.I laugh, must have been 3-4 years or more ago I was thinking "that Charlie Adam would be a big help to us". Oh dear.
