Pirlo would consider a move to Chelsea

Andrea Pirlo has become the latest AC Milan player to offer himself to Chelsea as Stamford Bridge looks in danger of turning into Little Italy. Milan defensive midfielder Gennaro Gattuso hinted he was interested in a move to Stamford Bridge and now playmaker Pirlo, 30, has followed suit.Pirlo, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, has been at Milan since 2001 and worked under manager Carlo Ancelotti for six years, winning two Champions League trophies and finishing runner-up once.

But now that Ancelotti has moved to London to take over at Chelsea it seems his former players are falling over themselves to join him.

Pirlo is currently playing in the Confederations Cup for Italy in South Africa but says he is tempted by a move to west London.

He said: "I will think about my future at the end of the tournament. I don't know if I'll continue with Milan.

"Perhaps it's possible that I could join Ancelotti in London. He is a great coach and perhaps I could play with him again. I've been at Milan a long time and maybe it's time for a new chapter in my career."

The big decision for Ancelotti is whether Pirlo would strengthen his squad because midfield is not Chelsea's problem position.

They already have Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, Michael Ballack and John Mikel Obi challenging for places in that area of the pitch, not to mention out of favour Portuguese star Deco.

But the Italian is keen to have someone on board who has worked with him before and understands his football philosophy. And both Pirlo and Gattuso fits the bill.

Bar maybe Pato I cant imagine Chelsea fans would want anyone from Milan, their midfield couldn't cope with Arsenal a couple of seasons back and is certainly no better than the 3 Chelsea already have that play in there.

Defence like wise I dont think even Nesta would necessarily walk into their team with the form Alex showed last season (albeit he was in there due to his familiarity with Hiddink).

I guess it boils down to whether Ancelotti will see it that way though.

perfect... they buy gattuso...

and we will take essien off their hands...

that would be nice...

seriousley though with essien, ballack, lampard, mikel and cole do they really need 2 more central midfielders

Plus, Pirlo's age doesn't really dictate his style. He's a deep lying playmaker, like Carrick. He doesn't rely on his fitness or pace or anything like that.

it's been at least two seasons since Nesta has shown anything remotely close to being on form. Even when they won the CL two seasons ago, Carvalho was at the time just as good if not a better defender than Nesta. A bunch of old men in that Milan squad.

I don't think they will sign Gattuso. That will leave them with Lampard, Essien, Pirlo as their first choice midfielders, with Mikel and Ballack as backups. I don't think Ballack will play much of a role this year, but thats still 5 very good midfielders, and they play with 3, so I don't think them signing Pirlo is stupid at all.

a player who likes a lot of time on the ball in midfield... in the premiership...

humm i suppose we have our new veron in berbatov perhaos the renties feel they need a new veron as well?? though id happily give them berbatov for essien if they were stupid enough

Pirlo is one of my favourite players.

I actually love him, his style of play and everything.

Lampard--Essien
-------Pirlo

V.Nice. I dont rate Mikel much, and Essien is much better when allowed to bomb forwards, so it'd be a better signing than Deco and Ballack were (who havent been succesfully slotted into the team alongside Lamps).

That said Ive barely watched Pirlo play in the last two seasons.

Well tbf Nesta has had an extraordinary amount of injuries in the last 2 years. So much so that the team will probably have to plan without him in mind next season, as he's out so often. Not that Galliani will admit it though

They lost 2 players

And made about £70 million

Disastrous. :)

Nah but seems everyone in their team is wanting out, or are linked to someone else. Pirlo, Pato, Kaká is gone, Maldini retired, Ancelotti to chelsea, Beckham will be back in LA..

Nesta has been class for ages now, it was about time the wear and tear on his body started to show... and that was 2 seasons ago:o

All bollocks then:

AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo has denied touting himself to Chelsea.

"I have never spoken with the Irish Independent (one of the newspapers to run the quotes on Wednesday) and I have never told anyone anything like the quotes which have been attributed to me," Pirlo told Milan's official website.

If this ends up giving Pirlo the kick up the arse he needs he'll walk into that Chelsea midfield because he's better than Ballack.

I don't think Alex is all that either, no better than Ivanovic, although both are good.

Chelsea and Barcelona have shown interest in signing Andrea Pirlo, who could be available at a cut-back price in January seeing his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Reports from Italy suggest Andrea Pirlo could opt against extending his Milan deal which expires in June and that has alerted a number of interested clubs.

Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani said that the club were doing their best to reach an agreement with the midfielder over the new deal, but as the time goes by, Pirlo is more likely to leave the Rossoneri.

Carlo Ancelotti is eager to be reunited with the Italy international at Chelsea after coaching him at Milan, and this could be the great chance for the Blues to reinforce their midfield area with a world-class player.

Barcelona are also keeping tabs on Pirlo, with Pep Guardiola very keen on the Italy midfielder.

Barca wouldn't want him, they already have Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Mascherano, Keita, and young Alcantara covering the three CM positions and are still lusting after the holy grail that is Cesc Fabregas' signature.

I doubt Chelsea would want him either. I smell an agent leak to bump up the salary of the new contract.

More and more big players running down their contracts to get what they want now.

He's just confirmed he's leaving Milan. What a free signing he would be for whoever snaps him up. I don't see why he would want to take a step down and join Juventus though, which is being rumoured.

Maybe Milan didn't want him anymore?

In that case a club like Juve would make sense given his age etc.

They're cutting costs of wages and getting rid of those OAPs clogging up the squad. About time I say

Would anyone else (apart from me) think that Pirlo would not be a terrible signing for us?

I think he could still do a very good job for us. Nothing to strenuous or up and down the pitch but sitting in front of the back 4 and building the attacks from deep.

He'd provide ample cover and would surely be a good influence around the club for the younger players who would be able to learn from one of the best at what he did.

I personally would not advocate this signing as our only signing of the summer but think if he was bought in tandem with a few others, would be shrewd, especially if Scholes hangs up his boots
