Manchester United defender Gerard Pique claims a deal to take him back to former club Barcelona is at "an advanced stage".

Pique left the Nou Camp to join United in 2004 at the age of 17.

However, after failing to make his breakthrough in England the Catalan youngster is looking for a return to his former club.

"Negotiations with Barca are at a very advanced stage," he told Barcelona's website.

"I like the idea of being able to play in a Barcelona shirt again.

"At the moment there's nothing official. Now we just have to wait for more details.

"At the moment the decision has to be made by other people."

Pique, who is back in Barcelona to prepare for a friendly game between Catalunya and Argentina on Saturday, also spoke highly of new Barca coach Pep Guardiola.

"He was a great player and he has the character you need to coach a side like Barca," he said.

"A new project is starting with Guardiola and there is a lot of new hope."

He is homesick, gutted he wants to leave. :(

United will place him with a better player, plus make a decent profit; it's all good

Pique: Ferguson has been blanking me

Gerard Pique has fired a salvo at Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson as he prepares to complete his return to Barcelona.

"Since I have started talking to Barcelona, Ferguson has virtually ignored me," Pique told Sport.

"The best thing is going to be arriving. I hope that a solution can be reached soon and that my future will be clarified.

"On Friday I will be in Barcelona to prepare to play for Catalunya against Argentina and for the time being I still have a year left on my contract with United.

Misleading words from the press

Shame, but fair enough, the lad wants top play football (not that he'll get it a t Barca).

He only has a year left in his contract?

If he wants to leave, he is not going to sign a new contract and we are not going to be able to give him the playing time he wants...

Pique did well in the games he played this season. But the price for Brown staying is Pique leaving just like signing Tevez meant Rossi was sold. We can't have our cake and eat it at the same time.
Good luck to Pique.

Shame we have the best defence in the world but then again, we do not have cover for them. Pique would definitely get more games next season. If he goes, can't blame him. He has waited for his chance and has done well when he played.

I don't know who'd be willing to come to the club knowing that they'd have no chance of a first team spot. Looks like Evans will have to be drawn in as the backup.

Evans being better is a step to far. He has the potential, but he isn't close to Piques talent yet.

Its a shame but when Wes signed the new contract the writing was on the wall. It was always going to be 1 or the other.

It is just unfortunate for Pique that he is coming through when the Vidic Ferdinand parternership is at it's best. There was no way he was going to break into the team, not for another 4 years at least when Rio is too old. He has the ability to be a world class defender. I wish him all the best in Spain and I reckon he will do well. I don't blame him for leaving, he just wants to play. Fair play to him.

Pique set for Barca return

FC Barcelona and Manchester United have reached agreement for the transfer of Gerard Piqué to the Catalan club. Gerard, 21, will sign a four-year contract with Barcelona.

The young Spaniard returns to Camp Nou after leaving for Old Trafford in 2004. During his four-year Reds career, Piqué made 14 starts and nine substitute appearances.

Both of Gerard's senior goals came in last season's successful Champions League campaign, against Dynamo Kyiv and AS Roma.

Although Piqué enjoyed his most prominent Old Trafford season during 2007/08, the longstanding central defensive partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic meant his route to regular first-team action was blocked.

Football transfer rumours: Gerard Piqué back to Manchester United? | Jacob Steinberg | Football | guardian.co.uk

From the rumour mill:

United have been "alerted" to a row between Gerard Piqué and Pep Guardiola after the Barcelona defender was left on the bench at Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night, meaning he could become the world's first ever Frisbee Footballer, pinging back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and back and forth between Old Trafford and the Camp Nou until he retires. Saving that, they could just annoy Barcelona by beating them to Valencia's £20m defender Adil Rami. United are also set to do battle with Manchester City for Derby County's wonderkid Will Hughes, with the winner of said battle set to unveil a gaudy triumphalist poster in Deansgate.

Definitely would not mind him here but it will never happen. Journalists getting bored again.

Linked with 3 different players in 5 lines. Impressive.

"world's first Frisbee footballer"...Robbie Keane wants his title back.

Why would we sign him back?

No way will this happen?

He won't come cheap now as well.

Interesting about the Derby player, never heard of him and most of my mates are Derby fans. Mason Bennett seems the next wonderkid if I'm honest.

Seems like when Casillas was linked with United while he was fighting with Real Madrid over a new contract.

If you´re at Real or Barcelona then who are you going to threaten to leave them for? Manchester United, or a Liverpool or an Aston Villa.

If you want your club to significantly up your wages you chuck in the old City rumour nowadays - Rooney and Terry are recent examples of this working.
