Twenty teams, of course. 92 professional football clubs in the pyramid if I’m not mistaken, but what would be the PL that you would love to see if you could curate your own?

Several factors to consider, like PL staples of your childhood who you feel just ‘belong’ in the PL, great rivalries, teams you have a personal affinity to etc.

Mine would be:

Manchester United (obviously)

Liverpool (people always say things like they would love to see them relegated, but we’d miss them if they wasn’t around.

Leeds United (great rivals, games with meaning)

Arsenal (as a London red, they have always been my main rivals in a way)

Tottenham Hotspur (always liked them. Always associated them with being a fairly unthreatening, but entertaining side).

West Ham United (I’m an East Londoner, great stadium too)

Milwall FC (just because of the team above. Quite simply for the plot, those two games a season would stop the city)

Leyton Orient (my second team, local side)

Newcastle United (great fanbase, great entertainers in the 90s)

Sunderland (just a team that should be in the PL, and I love the Newcastle rivalry. Was between them and Middlesbrough, both for the same reasons, had to choose one)

Blackburn Rovers (just a proper PL team. Former winners, localish rivals, and good PL pedigree and heritage)

Wrexham (for the plot)

Aston Villa (proper PL team, historic stadium)

Bristol City (someone gotta represent for the West Side)

Bolton Wanderers (local derby for United, were generally always hanging around the PL when I was growing up)

Southampton (another who are just a traditional PL side)

Portsmouth (always seemed to have some character about them, and I like a South Coast rivalry)

Everton (they could really have missed out, I have generally always found them fairly inconsequential. Even their local rivalry is rubbish and one-sided, and they have, over 30 odd PL years, generally always been one of the more unwatchable teams. Still, someone needs to buy our United rejects)

Sheffield Wednesday (another nostalgia pick, I prefer them to their Blades, had some memorable players from my childhood like the Di Canio/Carboni partnership too)

Derby County (someone needs to lose 5-0 to us)

No one including Nottingham Forest? European cup winning side. Have to be in an ideal PL for me, especially if we are talking nostalgia.

I'd probably include them, but their aura has diminished a lot since they've been back in the PL for me. The old absence makes the heart grow fonder thing.

I was born right around the time they were winning those European Cups so don't remember them. Still, that legacy lived on into my early years and it was easy to make the connection due to Clough still being around.

Good players like Stuart Pearce and Des Walker were there for a number of years in my childhood, and were part of forming the club's identity in my mind too. Top 10 in the league every season from when I was 4 until I was 13 and often good in the cups, they had a certain stature. They went down and back up again a couple of the times in the 90s but still kept that standing in my mind, and then for much of 20-odd years they were away from the PL after that.

Now that they're back they've kind of killed it a bit. Huge player churn, a couple of managers already. I think they only have one player who has over 50 league appearances (Gibbs-White) so no heroes or icons at all. It's the reality of trying to stay up these days, and how football has changed but they don't have any identity or romance about them at all in their current incarnation. They're just another one of those teams toiling away at the wrong end of the table with very little chance to ever make an impression again due to how football finances work now, and nearly all connection with the past has died.

Think it might have been better if they never came back as far as keeping up my levels of nostalgia goes but obviously they don't exist to do that for me. Formerly successful clubs now in the Championship or lower are more romantic than current wrong end of the Premier League scrappers.

I already did this thread. Think it got like 1 reply

No city for me. Boring club. Leeds, Liverpool would be in there for the rivalry

Millwall and West Ham in there together is a must

I'd have city for the derby, but only after they've been properly punished, changed ownership, spent some years in the wilderness, had to build up again organically and are openly apologetic about what they did.

I'd also only have teams like Newcastle if they changed owners, no state owned teams.

It seems weird seeing Blackburn. Leicester and Liverpool on the PL champions list.

West Ham/Millwall would easily be the fiercest rivalry in the PL if they were both here I think.
