To fit into todays side. Who would it be & why?

Mines would be Norman Whiteside without a doubt.

Pace, power, passing, tackling, arial ability, scored goals & he could stick it to the scousers. Would have been the perfect partner for Roy keane IMO. yep, i would choose him even over the legend Robbo.

Plus Big Norm had the added attraction of being able to play up front.

Steve Coppell take over from becks on the right and push becks into a floating role behind the strikers

Thats fair play...Id have to say Robbo or Hughsie though too. :)

Gary Bailey, without a doubt.

He was fantastic, just a shame to see a great career cut short

Come on - Gary had some great games - but some real howlers too. I know it technically happened in the 70's but I still have nightmares remembering Bailey flap at Rix's looping cross while Alan "Murderer" Sunderland lurked behind him. Ugh!

take Stevie Bruce - IMO thingsd started to turn around once he came to town

Brucie joined us in '87..[/QB][/QUOTE]

yeah - but that's still the 80's.

Let's face it we were a mediocre team that had the odd great night - Barca 84, couple of cup finals - beating the scouse. I know coz I stood on the Stretty the whole decade - and apart from robbo and Brucie I wouldn't let a team bus from this era anywhere near OT.

Just think we all thought Neil Webb was going to make us BETTER

I know it was still the 80's. My point was that Brucie joined us a few years before we became good. The signings of Pally and Ince in '89 was more of a turning point IMO.

Sparky, definately. A striker (and maybe a back-up LB) is what our squad is lacking.

Whiteside is perhaps the most overrated United player of all time...a raw-boned bully with next to no technique...I loved him to bits at the time and he scored some memorable goals...but he was always a dinosaur from day one...a player defined by and only of his time.

The obvious - Sparky, Robbo.

And the not so obvious. Arnold Muhren.

Ditto! We should have had this tremendous keeper between the posts! Bailey was one of the reasons I started support United. And yes, it's a shame he couldn't play on for longer.... :(

Can't believe that this is even open for discussion, it would have to be Robbo. Lets not forget that Robbo single-handedly carried a shite team through a decade. There are other stars of course but Robbo is head and shoulders above anyone else. Robbo also hated Scousers and loved beating them. We certainly wouldn't have been beaten so many times recently against the Poo and Robbo wouldn't get the type of injuries that he used to get due to the less physical nature of todays games.

Sorry to say this but did many of the above actually watch/support United during the 80's?

P.S. failing him Ralphie Milne ;)

Robbo for definite. Sparky to play alongside RVN, what a combo that would be. McGrath - Rio, ooohh pure class. I used to like Arthur Albiston and Mike Duxbury, 2 very underated but solid defenders who just did their jobs and got on with it, a la Dennis Irwin.

Duxbury was awesome.... until he got picked for England. His one cap seemed to do his head in and he was never the same player after that. Anyone have any ideas why that was ??

<img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" /> <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" /> welcome back buzz you <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

whiteside was a world class player let down by mostly by injuries. I seem to recall Juventus wanted to buy him but Big Norm said no way he wanted to stay a red.

Me too Oscar. Happy days though eh. You never knew from one game to the next how we'd play.

I know we were standing then, but the atmosphere, with an average of 43000, blew the pants off OT as it is now with 67000.

Barca was great the peak. Here's a few more memories for ya:

Robo's goal against the Scousers in the FA semi !
That Mark Hughes hatrick, he drilled the third in from outside the box when it easier to bring the ball on.
A Coppell screamer from the edge of the box.
All those Stapleton headers.
Gordon McQueen running 50 yards to put man and ball into the stand.
Those Muhren crosses.
Hughes scissor kicks.
Wallace's overhead (haha - he one great moment)

How big Ron avoided winning league with that bunch I'll never know. Just as well though - he might still be here <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />
