Both players leaving the "gloom" of Elland road July 2022 for better things.
City paid 49m, Barca 58m.
Looking at the current valuation of the same players.
City would be lucky to get 15m for Phillips. Whereas Raphina's value has gone through the roof
How the feck can that happen?
I mean both going to top clubs with top players and coaches around them. Yet one almost ending up on the scrap heap and the other amongst top 5 in the world tearing it up on footballs biggest stage.

I think people knew Raphinha was way better than Leeds. Bruno raved about him and people here were hopeful we could sign him a while ago. Tricky with Leeds, and even more tricky when Barca come calling. But he was always their best player when I somehow watched a Leeds match.

I’m going to shock you now, but players are often quite different.

Raphina was always very obviously going to be a star.

Phillips was never worth that money and was widely deemed to be a weird move for City at the time. I don't recall anyone who thought he'd get significant game time there.

Raphinha was always a different kettle of fish but he's having an amazing season.

Raphinha had like 3 different clubs fighting for him - Barca, Chelsea and I’m pretty sure Bayern were involved too. He was hot commodity. He was always a much much bigger talent than fecking Phillips.

Because Raphina was a top talent while Phillips found his level at Leeds and couldn't make the step up.

Phillips was always an average player who they purchased as they needed English players for the homegrown counts.

Raphinha was a talented winger who exploded at Barca. We're the suckers who bought Antony when both were seen at a somewhat similar level and fee.

Phillips was signed cause City needed a midfielder but also he needed to be homegrown. He was a decent player who filled a quota. Raphina was always destined for the top and if not Barca it'd be one of the Prems top 5 or Real/Bayern/PSG.

One wonders though whether Raphina would have turned out to be the player he is now if we had signed him. Development of new signings usually go in the other direction with us.

Phillips was only ever a Championship player on a purple patch, like Drinkwater or Adam or Sidwell before him. He was already reverting to the mean while he was still at Leeds. Raphinha was very different.
